maybe it's because...

Maybe it's because Thai people don't use chopsticks! They use a fork and spoon, and many North Americans think they are being authentic by eating Thai with chopsticks.

Anyway, My Thai is up there with Baan Thai and Sod Sai on Douglas. The key dishes to test at any Thai place is their tom yum and green or red curries. If those aren't good then the other dishes probablt aren't either!

Not what it used to be

I used to frequent My Thai when they first opened, drawn to the great food and reasonable prices. I moved away for a few years and decided to try it again after moving back to Victoria. Wow, how things have changed.

I was first struck by just how dirty the place has gotten. There was dirt and cobwebs all over the place, the carpets were absolutely filthy, and the place did not smell very good. They also haven't painted the place since it opened and it shows. The tables had chips of paint missing all over them and looked like something out of a Salvation Army furniture section. They also had graffiti all over the front sign, which they hadn't bothered to clean or replace.

My wife wanted to leave at this point, but I remembered the food being good so we hung in there to order food. Big mistake. While the curry was not terrible, the pad thai was burnt and disgusting. The shrimp that it came with also smelled pretty bad and were not fresh. The only thing I didnt mind was the white rice.

The meal was over $50 by the end, but was not worth half of that. There is a reason the place was empty for the dinner service.

There isn't much variety on the menu, but most items are pretty good. The beef salad is a real delight. The place is so small that service is pretty good if you make reservations. Very inexpensive but limited alcoholic selection. My favourite place for thai (tied with the place in Sidney), even though Baan maks better food.

yeah what's up with the grey smirk standing there at his desk, with his head lamp and his telephone(?) right next to a table that I never wanted to sit at, while she is cooking up a storm -- oups. The squid is too chewy, but the food is good-- if I remember correctly. The ambiance is way too weird it's been a long time for me because of this issue.

My Thai Cafe is a great place for a good meal

I have been a client for many years at My Thai Cafe and the food has always been great. I have never received anything burnt and have never had an unfriendly visit. I was reading some of the reviews and I can not believe how people are rating this fine family owned dinner. The work hard, always checking if you need more water, checking to see how your food is. The tables being chiped is likely because Joe average does not care about banging their chair into the tables.

Anyway, for all those who read those reviews, your doing yourself a disservice if you do not try their food for your self. The Panang Gai is great. The Pad Thai is wonderful. The Green Curry is awesome.

Everyone should try Mai Thai Cafe

Great curry dishes and very friendly & knowledgable staff! We've been going here for at least 5 years and it's been a wonderful mainstay. We usually do takeout, partly because the interior is tiny and often full. And guess what? It's actually open on Sunday afternoons while the rest of Victoria's culinary offerings switch to their answering machines. I also feel good about supporting a small operation in which you can easily speak to the person preparing your meal ;-)
