Sophie's Cosmic Cafe is a family friendly restaurant in Kitsilano on west 4th near Arbutus. They have their own hot sauce and have an all day menu which includes breakfast.
I work in the area and heard this was a great little brunch spot so a friend and I stopped by for lunch this afternoon. Sat on the patio, which was a great choice.
The food was excellent. We both had the santa fe eggs bennedict, which had great flavour and was very filling. The iced tea is perfect, as are the ice cream floats.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes traditional food with a little interesting modifications. For example, the eggs benny was served on cornbread with salsa and avocado, with lots of paprika and black beans. The homefries were homefries. I liked them just fine. $12 for the plate, which is a reasonable price for great food. The patio had a nice atmosphere, but was a little crowded
I would suggest going on a weekday when possible, there was no wait today and the service was just fine.
My husband and I decided to find a spot to eat near UBC from the Entertainment Book. Sophie's looked like fun and they had quite a few customers, so we thought it would be a good bet. It was just OK. The waitress was very nice and energetic, but she could use some tips on how to get customers to order more (she gave us water and assumed that's all we wanted, plus she did not mention the specials, plus no mention of dessert). I had the salmon burger and fries, which was alright, but maybe a bit pricey at $12.95. My husband tried linguini with prawns, $13.95. It was OK, but not as flavourful as it could have been. Comfortable enough place. We were glad to have our 2 for 1 coupon.
I went here for Sunday brunch. There actually wasn't a line up at all, which really surprised me, so I was initially pleased. However, we stood in the doorway for what seemed like hours before either of the three (yes, three) servers standing at the counter chatting away noticed my husband and me. We were finally and reluctantly directed to a table.
We each ordered an omelette with hash browns. I had heard such good things about the breakfast menu here that I was still quite excited for the arrival of our food. It ended up being the equivalent to anything you could get at IHOP (although I think IHOP could do a better job). I had noticed our plates sitting on the counter for a while before our server grudgingly cut her conversation short with another staff member to bring them over to us. Overall synopsis: cold, bland and really disappointing.
More points taken off due to the drink I ordered and had to remind our server twice about getting for me - she acted so breezy about it, like it happens all the time and it's no big deal. I for one am getting tired of these trendy establishments that favour style over substance. Won't be going back.
