If quality is not as important

Kishu Island doesn't claim to be the best or the most authentic, and it isn't. But, they do well for what they are. Quick and cheap eats. I ordered your typical chicken bento box here and the boyfriend had 1 dynamite roll.

The food I got was average. Nothing special, but a good value. The tempura was freshly made, which is was really great considering how fast my order was ready. I was worried that the food quality would not be satisfactory since the restaurant was pretty empty and also because I was afraid that they had premade most the items.
Boyfriend's dynamite roll was large enough to please. At first he ordered 2 rolls, but the server only heard 1 and charged 1 - he was happy with the 1 roll and was glad he didn't get 2.

Kishu Island is budget-friendly and gets the job done - fills you up without breaking the bank. Would I come here again? Sure, for cheap eats. But I wouldn't come here expecting high quality ingredients and that's the key.

Not bad at all

Hello there,

Myself and a buddy of mine decided to check this place out since this was his recommendation and he was on a budget. I was kind of leery of it due to fact the one downtown on Seymour is kind of crappy. We got there around 8ish and no wait in line or a lot a people in the restaurant
Ambiance....ok. I did see a sign on the window for 40% off sushi...happy hours but checking the menu...its only a selected amount of stuff so we opted for bento boxes instead. My buddy got the seafood bento box and I got the sashami/yakisoba bento and got one of their chef's special...a Vietnamese spring roll...GO FIGURE??!!! Our meals arrived very quickly...it looks good and the portions were decent as well. The taste...hey!...its pretty good. With pop, taxes, and tip...our bill was about $20 bucks....how do you beat that??? So, my indecision rest in peace...I would recommend this place to others for cheap eats.

Decent

I go there once in a while because it's close to work and on Sundays, not many places are opened. It's cheap and fast but i don't care, i go there because it's edible. You are not gonna get something dry or not fresh. It's not top quality but for what you'll pay, you won't feel ripped off. The place looks a bit crapy, seats are fucked really and there not really any kind of privacy. Bottom line is, service is decent, food is decent, service is decent. I can live with that.

The service was fast, food was okay, but the chicken in the sushi rolls was ROCK HARD. I informed them that they cooked the chicken way too much, to a rock hard point, and they said "thats how eveyone likes their chicken", i said no, nobody likes rock hard chicken you can break your teeth on, their response was a long blank stare, very irratating, the rest was the whole i don't understand english routine. very poor rating.

Never Again

Went there after having not been there for a while. Didnt think it was possible, its gotten worse.
The Service was ok, however the server didnt know all the boxes offered as there was so many listed on the menu's, the papers by the table, and the ones above the kitchen. She went and asked the cook.
The food was terrible. The salmon looked dried on the top, the gyoza I sent away as the smell of it was making me sick.
The booths I would avoid. The seating is lumpy and if you arent careful you will sink right down to make you feel as if you were a kid putting your chin on the table.
The coca cola we got as drinks was the best part

Recommended by girls who eat at The Foundation

I like walking around Vancouver to try out the eats.

So I asked a couple girls outside the Foundation, a vegan restaurant, where the nearest sushi place and two of them recommended the Kishu Island. In fact, they directed me there as they rode by me on their bicycles.

So I ordered the small chirashi and a small sake, which only comes in hot. Being ingenious, I requested a glass of ice into which to pour the sake, which cooled it right down without turning all the ice to water!

Chirashi is several kinds of seafood on sushi rice in a bowl. There was tako, salmon, tuna, shrimp and flounder. To season it, I took the dollop of wasabi and mixed it up with about a four teaspoon of shoyu and poured it over everything.

After chirashi, I slowly sipped on the now cold sake.

The bill came to about $12.19 after tax, and I tipped them 1.81 for a total of $14.00.

Afterwards I bused it from in front of the place to a bus stop south of there and walked up to E. 16th Ave and back down to Kishu Island to pick up a Gatorade Ice bottle I forgot there. The waitress who served me forgot me and thought I was ordering takeout until I told her I'd been in earlier and forgot my bottle.

Oh, and this is how to drink sake.

Cheap Nigiri!
By FarFromSubtle of Gastown, Vancouver (7 Reviews)

I am surprised there aren't any reviews of this place yet... the place is always busy. Service here is great, the waitresses are friendly and attentive. The booths are great for group seating, and conversation. There are specials posted on every square inch of the place! Seriously, you have to see it for yourself... I have never seen so many similar combos... often just one item has been replaced.

Now, the rolls aren't anything special, but we only really go here for the cheap Nigiri. Tuna and Salmon are $1 a piece at dinner (more at lunch for some reason). The freshness of the fish has been hit and miss... but mostly hit so far. It's a good go-to when you are craving a large helping of simple sushi for a reasonable price.

Open late!
