Decent but watered down Asian food

I've eaten at Fresh Bowl numerous times and its always consistently decent. I've tried their curries, laksa, mee goreng, and satays. They were all fine, nothing outstanding. As their name implies, the ingredients were fresh and the taste were solid albeit a little watered down. You will not find bold Asian flavours at Fresh Bowl.

If you are looking for authentic Asian food, look elsewhere. Fresh Bowl is all about catering to the masses and making fresh dishes that have been modified to cater to the Western palate. I am guilty for eating here occasionally for lunch because its easy and reasonably priced.

Surprisingly good

I'm a bit of a SE Asian food snob and didn't have high expectations for this place. But I was in a rush and wanted take-out that was a bit different, so I gave it a shot.

I ordered the Sambal Chicken with the "Jambori" rice (nice that I could opt for a more interesting rice) and Temple Salad. The Sambal Chicken actually had some kick to it, and had a nice blend of flavors rather than the one-dimensional flavors you can sometimes get at other SE Asian places. The salad had a really tasty dressing, and had lots of herbs (mint, cilantro) to take it beyond just a pedestrian bowl of greens.

The portion size of the two looked quite small when I eyeballed it, but once I shared the chicken and salad with another person and we were both stuffed afterwards. Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised. I also really appreciated that they used compostable/recyclable take-out containers, something that most places can't be bothered to do.

I didn't get anything that might be more difficult to pull off authentic flavors (i.e. beef rendang, gado gado, roti canai, laksa) but will give it a go next time around, along with some of their house-made teas.
