Not as upscale as they try to be...

Or maybe that's the problem.
The products themselves -- the cupcakes -- are beautifully decorated and absolutely charming in their presentation however the actual taste is just average. They DO taste like any ol' cake mix you can pick up from your local grocers; I'd be genuinely surprised if they are indeed made from scratch. The cake portion on the cupcakes varies in quality and I wonder how long the product actually keeps. It's not bad but it's not what you'd expect from a place that offers expensive cakes and wedding cake consultations.
And yeah, like others here, I find the icing is much too thick and much too sweet.
The staff are not friendly people; it seems a chore to serve you...or maybe that's them trying to give the place that upscale snobbery.
For the price it's okay...we get them for work quite often and they don't break the budget.
The pink decor is pretty cute -- it seems to go instep with the presentation of their goods but it's not really a place where you stay to drink in the ambiance; you go, you get your treat, you leave. It might be charming if they played up a parlor-type thing but the place is kinda busy at times and cramped enough as is. It's a bakery, not a restaurant.
Decent enough cakes, bad service...just okay.

what's with the service?

I absolutely love Cupcakes. So do all of my co-workers. I will often take them into the office. The service at the Broadway location is great. Several times I have called in and they have set aside a dozen cupcakes of choice and held them for me, and they have done so happily. But what's up with the service on Denman? Everytime I have been there, the service has been horrible. The staff don't greet you when you walk in...instead they ignore you and make you wait without any acknowledgement; they never smile; they have bad attitudes and in general are unpleasant. It's unfortunate that I have encountered this during every visit at that location.
