Good dosas, fast service

They recently expanded their menu to include more varieties of dosa but the quality and portion size remains quite good. The food, rather than the ambiance is the star in this restaurant. If you order the dosas, it arrives at your table fresh with a crispy skin on the edges and the curry or potato masala in the middle. Also good to try is their kottu roti, as it is also made fresh and comes with a very tasty gravy/curry.

Dashed hopes

When this place opened, I had high hopes. The owner, a Southern Indian fellow in his 40s or so, was pleasant, polite to a fault, and a delight to be around. His wife was as well. The food, while not sublime, was edible, and the special when it first opened was as good a deal as the Desi Dosa Madras which would soon open across the street. Unfortunately, as time went on, several problems became apparent in the execution of things.

First of all, the combo disappeared and the price of dishes went up (curry and rice, even vegetarian, costs $20 with 2 extra chapathi, routinely closer to $30.) This in and of itself was alright, as the service made up for it...until the owner stopped showing up to work. A man, who I presume to be his son, replaced him, and, to be blunt, his son was a jerk. His son would routinely not bother to cook things from scratch, used the microwave with abandon (this became the rule rather than the exception), refused to listen to his customers (I like my South Indian food to be as spicy as it would be served to the Indians themselves, and while the father always accommodated this, every single time the son served me I would end up eating something with all the heat of sour cream), and was hesitant and rude.

The last two times I went there (different days, months apart), thinking this had to be a slump or error, the food seemed to almost exclusively be microwaved, the servings had shrunk, and the service was awful. I actually stopped going because the last time I was there his son had decided to enter a whole new level of unpleasant behavior: Myself and another fellow arrived in the restaurant at about 2 o'clock intending to have lunch. The only other people in the restaurant were two old Sikh gentlemen who were eating, and a family of four Tamils who had just placed their order. After we placed our order (lamb curry and rice with chapati - nothing a place like this wouldn't have on hand), we waited. And waited. And waited. In the hour we waited, three other Indian couples came in, and each one was served. It was only when we got up to leave that - lo and behold - our meals miraculously appeared, to the ding of microwaves. My rice was cold and solid in the centre, the chapati was rubber, and the curry disgusting with chickpeas like pebbles. I walked out and have never been back. His excuses were offensive to my intelligence - that there was no chef (I could see and hear the same people that are always there) and that we had ordered non-dosas which was all he could do while chefless (he took the order, for one, and for another, this was a bald-faced lie: at least three people ordered curries and rice and were served within 20 minutes of arrival!)

Stay away from this place. It's a pity a good thing died so quickly.

I was surprised to read the unpleasant reviews above, i have been there several times for lunch and dinner, and have never been dissapointed. the prices are way better than any other dosa place in the lowe main land, and the taste is very authentic.
I have been there atleast 20 times in the past 3 years.
