Only good for late nights

I do not recommend going to No.9 during the day, since there are so many better restaurants a block away on alexandra road. They have really big plates, so most people either share or they end up taking out the leftovers. They are usually super busy, and that explains why they offer pretty much the worst service ever. A friend of mine told me that a waiter was demanding for more tips from a table ! I mean .. "demanding for tips?" Then of course, those customers asked to speak to the manager.
Overall their food wasn't bad, but as for service, there is definitely room for improvement. Not mentioning how the waitress mixed up our order last time at 3am in the morning, and that wasn't funny at all cuz our table waited way too long for them to figure things out.

Food is good at times, but sometimes is undigestable. We have eaten here since it opened, often more than once a week, so thousands of dollars worth of food tests. It has gotten quite bad. Hot & sour soup so salty it could suck the water out of the tap, squid that wasn't cleaned, so it was stringy, and when I complained, the night manager had enough nerve to say you have to order it cleaned. After eating there for years, that was a first. It is not as clean as it should be, and the kitchen staff can be observed eating with their hands while they are still cooking, and at times smoking when the manager isn't around. A complaint is handled with sorry, we will do better next time, they won't even always take it off your bill. They used to care, but have raised prices to what other places now charge and you are still eating on plastic plates and bowls.

As some of the other reviewers have said, this restaurant is one those that you go to after work or late at night.

The food quality is inconsistent. Sometimes the food is done right and other times, it simply just misses the mark. We ordered Singapore noodles one week and they were swimming in gravy and the next time we ordered it, it was as dry as the Sahara. One dish that is usually pretty good is the Honey Garlic Ribs. I also enjoy the scallop and egg white fried rice. Finish that off with a side of chinese vegetables and you have a decent meal.

The service is also inconsistent. We do take out from this restaurant most of the time and the main hostess is fine but watch out if you are unfortunate enough to get the owner's daughter seating you. She is very rude and she doesn't care about customer service. If you don't speak chinese, you are definitely out of luck.

Its a 24/7 HK style cafe, what do you expect?

I say this with truth. Number 9 is good, to an extent. I mean, you really can't expect much for a 24/7 style hk cafe to run perfectly, can you? The food is actually pretty good considering that. Service could use a bit of help, but i mean, its jam packed everyday. Overall, food is pretty good- worth its price, service is do-able, and the people there are happy. Good job #9.

A good 24HR chinese restaurant. I always go there for late night snack. Very good food. I love how they make their congee, very soft and tasty. Their noodles and rice are very good as well, but their food is quite oily. The service, however, was poor. The waitress last time was very non-responsive. We told her the order and she just wrote everything down without saying anything what so ever, and just left when she finished writing everything down. We wanted to order another dish and called for her, after requesting for that dish, she didn't respond and just walked away, we didn't even know if she got our order. So we had to call her again to make sure she got our order! She is very bad mannered and very non-responsive! However the manager's service there made up for everything. He was very friendly and helpful. I would go back there next time.

Ok Choice - for a 24-hour Chinese restaurant
By Canada_Turtle of Richmond, Vancouver (5 Reviews)

As a frequent business traveller landing late at night in many locales throughout North America, I would have to say #9 is a decent choice. Think of a Hon's Restaurant that is open 24 hours.

(Potential) patrons should consider:
1. It's a 24-hour joint
2. It's Chinese (and Hong-Kong in its service style)

My ratings are therefore relative to those criteria and I recommend taking that into consideration before you set expectations.

+ it's open 24 hours for folks with appetites at all hours of the day.
+ Food quality can be compared to Hon's.
+ Service is relatively fast.
+ Recent renovation.

- It's very Chinese service-wise in that you should not be expecting smiles and stellar customer service.
- Price can be on the (relative) high side for what you get (for the more elaborate rice and noodle dishes).

i have been here a couple times and was past midnight. THE service sucks. Some of them have attitude and they just stand there doing nothing. maybe it was because its past midnight. BUT IF UR GONNA open all day . then u better work all day. Not do nothing.
the food just stands between bad and average.
