Not So Jubilant

The dinner gang was looking for some old-school Chinese action, and one of the group suggested this place. The restaurant was old and worn out inside, and it could have been cleaner. Service was okay, but very slow. We had a variety of dishes, but nothing really stood out, except the snake soup, which was bitter and awful, and the ma po tofu, which was tasty and spicy. As for value, it was decent for the quality of food.

We won’t be back.

Down home cooking

This restaurant is a "won ton" house style with a more extensive menu. The lunch specials are very good at $7.99, a dish, a bowl of rice, a drink or house soup. I ordered the down home style specials: tilapia fish head with green onions and ginger and the steamed fish with slices of pork liver and kidney. We also had wonton noodles and 4 kinds of BBQ meat and rice. There was ample food for 4.
In Chinatown, eons ago, my father took me to a restaurant which boasted of cooking 1 small whole fish, five different ways! Fish head soup, battered deep fried fish bones with vegeatbles, and the fillets 3 different ways(all out of a 1 to 1 and 1/2 pound rock cod).. Jubilant also cooked the fish head and bones battered and deep fried than tossed with cooked green onion and ginger. It was terrific! My Western friend was leery at first but after one bite, really dove in to it.Jubilant is decently appointed, service was fine, the food was tasty and we will be back...for more down home style food like pig's feet in vinegar, jook with preserved duck egg, etc.,etc.
