Good Little Sushi Spot
Submitted Tuesday, May 16, 2006 - 12:18am [Dine in]

My b/f came here w/ some friends a little while ago and he's been craving to come back for more! Just so happened when we went for a walk we came by this place so he just had to have me try some of their sushi.

Food: the rice on their sushi is sooo soft! just melts in your mouth. the tuna and sushi is really good too, none of the fishy taste.

Service: we had take out so can't really comment on the service, but our food was ready very quickly.

Ambiance: nice a little spot on denman. most tables seat 2-4ppl. not much for decor but i dont really expect much.

Overall: i'd come back for the sushi whether it's eat in or take out. they've got great price pts for all sorts of combos. if ur walking along english bay and have a craving for some good sushi, i'd def recommend checking this place out!

Submitted Friday, May 12, 2006 - 10:47am [Dine in]

i'd come here for dinner before and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. when my friends fr out of town told me they wanted steak for lunch, this was the first place that came to mind.

Food: last time i had the prime rib and my b/f had the new york steak and we both thought it was cooked to perfection. my friends this time also had the new york steak, but cooked blue!! they said the out edges were a little overcooked but as they ate into it, it was done very nicely. def no complaints about the food as everything was polished off!

Service: we went for a late lunch so it was the bartender that actually served us and he was very very nice. wasnt busy at that hour but he came by to make sure the food was fine and we had enough drinks at all times.

Ambiance: i dont mind all the TVs in there and i dont feel as if i'm in a sports bar particulary b/c the ppl aren't the rawdy type. we may be catching the game/score fr time to time over a mouthfull of steak, but we're not on our seats cheering! i find the decor is fairly nice, upscale kind of look to it.

Overall: it is a little pricey, but i dont have a problem paying those types of prices for good food. i'm sure the next time i have a craving for steak again, this place will be calling my name...

Lightening Fast!
Submitted Friday, May 12, 2006 - 9:56am [Dine in]

Whenever i'm w/ my b/f and his mom and sushi for lunch is the craving, we always come to Richmond Sushi.

Food: they've got a wide variety on their menu. i tried the chicken knee joint for the first time and thought it was really tasty. basically little pieces of deep fried cartilage. the tempura isnt over battered. salmon and tuna pretty good.

Service: they're taking orders off these little hand held PDA looking things now. i swear as soon as he entered it in and walked away, not 1 min later, we got our gyoza!! we didn't even get our miso soup yet!! def no complaints about this new system they have going. i have to agree w/ other reviews that this place like other chinese restaurants, it not about customer service. it's more about efficiency and turnover.

Ambiance: i like how we can eat sushi and watch the game at the same time! busy busy busy. constant servers going in and out. i used the washroom and the toilet seats have the sani wrap contraption...but there was no sani wrap! what's the point?! atleast it didn't smell funny in there after stuffing myself w/ all you can eat.

Overall: i'd have to say this place is fairly consistent. never had a bad experience here yet, so we'll def be back.

It's Alrite....
Submitted Friday, May 12, 2006 - 9:40am [Dine in]

We normally dont come out to this part of town, let alone for sushi, but we were in the area and my bf had heard about this place so we decided to give it a try.

Food: we had the all you can eat lunch. the menu had a pretty wide selection. typical chinese run japanese place quality. the menu says bbq corn, but it's more like steamed corn.

Service: food comes out very quickly. plates cleared and water/tea refilled quickly. the service there is more about efficiency than anything.

Ambiance: nothing really stood out. nothing really special.

Overall: if i'm in the area again, i wouldn't mind coming back. be prepared to go for a walk after all you can eat tho!

Come Early!
Submitted Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 8:37pm [Dine in]

Food: i always get one of the fried rice w/ ??? combos. it's only fried rice, but for some reason i lub it here! it's kinda diff't and i find myself craving for it from time to time. i've tried the deep fried pork cutlet and deep fried chicken w/ it. they've always been consistently good until the last time i had it...too much batter! i dont know if it was a one time anomoly but both mine and my b/f's had so much access batter we had to remove it off the meat! bubble tea selection is huge and always very tasty!

Service: average busy busy tea house w/ servers running around. always polite but not always english literate.

Ambiance: very modern edgy looking decor. place to just hangout and chit chat over bbtea. never felt rushed to leave.

Overall: if i was looking for a bbtea place w/ good food and drinks to chill this would def be on my list of places to check out provided i dont have to wait too long to be seated. if you dont come early, u'll be waiting and forced to watch and drool over other ppl's food and drinks while they enjoy!

Average Sophistocated Dimsum?
Submitted Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 8:22pm [Dine in]

Food: they have the dimsum basics but also some unique items on the menu. i didn't have any complaints about the food, but nothing really made me crave for more either...except maybe the grn tea pudding/jello w/ the birds nest and gold shavings ontop. it tasted good and looked pretty! (but really, how could u get that wrong?!!)

Service: we always make reservations so we're seated fairly quickly. during lunch hours especially on wkends i see a lot of ppl waiting outside so if u can, i'd def call ahead. our food came fairly quickly and there's also tonnes of ppl around whether for tea, bill, food, etc.

Ambiance: typical bustling, loud chinese restaurant during dimsum. the decor is fairly nice in comparison to many of the other dingy places out there.

Overall: i wouldn't suggest to come here, but if i were invited i wouldn't complain either. it is a little on the pricey side but i guess they cater to a diff't breed of diners...the more sophisticated posh posh ones?! i personally enjoy the traditional push cart dimsum where i can see everything first! just doesn't feel like dimsum if it's not on a cart!

Stop the Flickering!
Submitted Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 2:28am [Dine in]

My b/f had a coupon for a free entree here and so we decided to go to this particular White Spot being closest to his place.

Food: i had the BC chicken burger which is my ultimate favorite! it gets really messy to eat w/ the triple O sauce but i dont care! sometimes it comes w/ too much mayo but then i'll just scrape it off to the side. i like the coleslaw here, not radioactive like KFC colesaw! my b/f had the mushroom burger which he enjoyed. we liked how the fries were not greasy...and we got them refilled for free ofcourse! caution: dont use the vinegar, it's really really weak!!

Service: everyone there is very friendly. appears they have a lot of regulars b/c they know ppl by face or name. they were nice enough to re-seat us so we could sit by the TV to watch the game. it wasn't too busy so we got our food relatively fast and our server always checked up on us.

Ambiance: very casual and friendly. when we went, the lights kept flickering all nite b/c of the construction going on nr by which was a little annoying, but that was out of their hands. it's not a place to take a date but if ur comfortable w/ going just for food and dont mind the "older" crowd in a fairly more sedate/calm environment this is ok.

Overall: next time i have a craving for the BC chicken burger i will still come back.

Consistent HK Cafe
Submitted Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 8:51am [Dine in]

Food: very large menu selection. not blow me away quality but always fairly good & consistent and never any complaints so far.

Service: always enough ppl on staff. doesnt take long to get water, bill, put in an order, etc.

Ambiance: usually a constant flow of traffic no matter the time of day. ive never felt rushed to lv...remembered staying till they politely dimmed the lights on us! yikes! we got the hint! b/c they're so busy sometimes if you get seated at the tables on the side, as opposed to the booths, u can end up seating next to strangers on both sides very close! but if u've been to HK u'll be use to sharing tables w/ others so it doesnt bother me. good place to go late nite especially b/c I-cafe is now closed so one less option in that area.

overall: it's a solid consistent HK style cafe and i will continue to return.

Solid Vietnamese Cuisine
Submitted Monday, May 1, 2006 - 9:47pm [Dine in]

this place was recommended to me by my sister whom loves the chicken on rice here so we decided to test this place out for ourselves.

food: we had vietnamese coffee, small #11 (well done flank? tendon, & tripe), large #1 (the special), chicken sandwich, and curry beef ball. the pho was pretty standard, no complaints...can't really go wrong! the curry beef ball i would suggest ordering a viet bun w/ it or something, we were too full to order more! but i did think it was kinda pricey for 6 beef balls in curry sauce, $5.95.

service: greeted us rite away. they were fast and friendly. were very busy but tried their best. even running around they acknowledged us.

ambiance: we went around lunch hr so it progressively got busier.

Worth Coming Back For More
Submitted Sunday, April 30, 2006 - 1:45am [Dine in]

after trying pearl castle, vogue, and ellie on the same block we thought we'd give this little place a try.

food: we had the shredded pork and pickled vegetable noodle, bbq pork wrapped in green onion pancake, and steamed pork bun. all three items were very good. the handmade noodle was very good and the soup not overpowering b/c there was no msg. although i've had bbq pork wrappd in grn onion pancake elsewhere, this is by far the best tasting! the ingredient are just very unique to this dish. the steamed pork buns still had soup when you bit into it but a couple of our ripped so some of the soup leaked out. this dish was sorta small only get 6 bite size buns and i do mean bite size! but i guess it is considered dimsum.

service: nothing out of the ordinary and no complaints.

ambiance: some unique decorations but nothing extraordinary. just some pieces thrown onto the walls in no particularly atmospheric enhancing scheme.

overall: we will definately come back to try some of the other dishes that we saw on the menu. if you want traditional taiwanese this is a solid place to go.

Not What It Use to Be
Submitted Sunday, April 30, 2006 - 1:25am [Dine in]

hadnt been here in a while but remember this place having pretty good food. since then i've heard mixed reviews and when i found out a wedding reception i was going to was to be held here i was looking forward to seeing for myself.

food: seafood was not so impressive for a seafood restaurant. jelly fish tasted sort of funky, crab claw ball not very good, lobster and abalone was average. doesnt taste like fresh seafood. there was no dish that really stood out.

service: servers were very attentive and friendly at all times. english and chinese friendly.

ambiance: well, we were here for a wedding so the ambiance was definately very festive. the restaurant was clean and decorations were lovely (but i think the decorations were done by the wedding party not the restaurant).

overall: it wasnt what i remembered the food to be. there are just so many other restaurants i could go to w/ much better quality. i would probably only return if i were invited to some sort of function there.

I'll Come Back...
Submitted Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 4:06pm [Dine in]

i had gone here previously and had been pleasantly surprised by the food this small quaint restaurant had to offer so i felt compelled to bring my sister there for her to try it out.

food: i had the spicy beef noodle last time and was craving to have it again this time and it was just as good as i remembered. it's pretty flavourful and not a lot of soup the way i like it. the brisket is very tender and i luv the garlic, spice, and minced preserved veggies. the roti canai was good, warm/hot and very crispy. unlike another review, i dont think that this restaurant premakes any of their dishes. they may prepare sauces, premarinate meat, etc ahead of time but it's def not microwave food!

service: last time i was here they were busy and the waitress forgot our tea, never refilled out tea, forgot to refill our tea when asked, took forever to flag down and this time there wasnt a huge improvement. the girls arent lazy, but they're just not "alert". they're just so focused on their task at hand that they're oblivious to 3 diff't tables trying to flag someone down. the high counter def doesn't help. but once u do get someone they are very polite.

ambiance: the interior is fairly clean and bright. there is a nice mix of asian and english music playing in the background at just the right volume so u know it's there but you can still chat away.

overall: i think i would still come back for the food. the food has been fairly consistent and came out at a decent time. taking a bit longer to get my tea or bill wont stop me from returning!

Worth a Try
Submitted Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 4:10pm [Dine in]

my b/f and i had been invited to try out this place and after looking over the menu and hearing 3rd party reviews how the Elvis Platter could feed 6 hefty guys w/ leftovers to take home we agreed to check this place out.

food: Elvis platter def does feed 6 large eaters no problem! there is a variety of different types of bbq meats and sides such as potato salad, coleslaw, beans, and fries. the meat was alright, i dont like the fact that it is prepared b4 hand and therefore comes out cold. sides were pretty good. i def liked the seasoned fries.

service: we had heard it was a self serve place kinda like nandos so i wasn't too surprised. the waitress was nice enough to accomodate our larger group and she was constantly busy seating and cleaning tables. the food came out pretty fast, but everything is premade.

ambiance: busy! crowded! def be prepared to wait! the decor is kinda tacky...but i guess it is suppose to be "southern"?!

overall: worth trying atleast once, but if your not big into meat, forget it!
