We drove by and we noticed some huge window display for the lunch special for $7.99 which is such a great deal!
So we sat down to try the lunch specials. I had the Phat Thai which i remember from visiting other Thai Restaurant to be a popular dish. My friend ordered the Green Curry, which the menu specified to be 2x spicy. The friendly waitress assured us that all the items can be modified to our liking.
The lunch specials included one piece of spring roll, a bowl of rice and a bowl of sweet & sour soup; which was more than we usually expect from lunch specials.
All in all, good eats, decent price, friendly atmosphere.
My friend and I decided to fill up before heading to metrotown to do some shopping so needless to say, we were hungry. We went there on a saturday night and it was good that we had the foresight to make a reservation as the room was already filled up at 6 and had a lineup around 730 when we left.
The decor of the restaurant was quite clean and well furnished but as some of the previous reviews has mentioned, might have been more westernized than traditional (which was alright). The thing that really bothered me was the noise level inside the restaurant. Granted, the dining room was packed but we had to literally shout across the table to have anything heard and that could be tiring really fast.
There were two types of servers, older asian gentlemen and younger CBC looking ones. I can understand why some of the reviewers mentioned a language barrier. But we got regular water refills and the service was nothing to complain about but neither was it something to write home about.
We ordered the Phat Thai and one of the curries in the final page that was surved inside a young coconut. They both tasted pretty good and we don't have any real complaints about them.
All in all, it would be best to try this place out on a less busier day so the noise level would be moderate and you can actually enjoy the food and "ambiance".
food:
rack of lamb + baked basa fillet w/ spinach alfredo sauce
seasoned prawns w/ curry rice
food wasn't bad, it for sure wasn't regular HK style cafe level
service:
when i arrived, it took the waitress a little while to realize i entered the restaurant, but after that, there wasn't any real issues with service
value:
its true that the pricing for the items in the menu is slightly higher than your average HK style cafe, but i believe that only really applied to the regular items. once you go up to the more special items such as the steak combos and the chef's specials, you'll find that the price are more justifiable
ambiance:
i can see how pittsburg might have been a trendier looking place when it first started but the decor has become a bit weathered over the years, so if they expect the customers to pay at a higher price point, the entire eating experience might have to be amended
conclusion:
first and foremost, i don't understand why the other reviewers here are reviewing about the regular items that you could eat anywhere, although i must admit the regular items are not their strongest suit, especially being priced higher than the competitors. i think that if you gave pittsburg a chance and try some of their specialty items, you might find that its not all that bad
