It's become my neighbourhood Chinese place!
Submitted Sunday, November 15, 2009 - 8:33pm [Dine in]

I recently moved into the neighbourhood and there is not much around here and decided to give this place a try.

There is always a crowd here, so parking can be a bit of an issue, be forewarned.

The dim-sum that I've tried has always been delicious and quite well priced. What I liked about this place is that if you are unclear on what to order, the manager was quickly able to make several recommendations based on what we liked after he asked what we would like to eat that evening.

He made sure to check back on us to and explained what certain ingredients were when we had questions. I loved the chicken hot-pot, it was so spicy and just delicious.

The restaurant itself has not much noteworthy in terms of ambiance, so you will be disappointed if that is important to you. But if you'd just like good food, served quickly, you'll be back time and time again.

Salt Tasting Room45 Blood Alley, Vancouver
Good company makes this place palatable..
Submitted Sunday, November 15, 2009 - 8:11pm [Dine in]

It was very hard to find this Salt last night as it was pouring rain and the "Salt shaker" is hard to see in a dark alley. Did not love the first impression of dumpsters, druggies and darkness.

However once you step inside, it's another story. We did not have a reservation and ended up sitting at the bar, where we entertained ourselves counting piggies and trying to talk over the loud music.

We ordered the tasting menu along with a flight and found the portions to be a little on the measly side, but considering that it's a tasting room, I suppose it's allowable. The servers were very sincere in trying to find out if we liked what we ordered/received and welcomed any feedback we had for them. The specials that we ordered were excellent.

While I would not go there again as it was too pricy for what you received, while I was there I certainly enjoyed the decor, the mix of people, and the food and wine. Stepping back out into the real world of Blood Alley, not such a nice end to an evening.

Went here for some desert wines last night and was sadly disappointed when the bartender placed someone else's order in front of me. After checking up on me and finding out that it was not my order, he went to get my wine, only to return with bad news: It was out!

As I was with a friend who recommended this place, I tried another wine which was ok and just enjoyed the decor. Loved the funky light fixtures, the mirrors.

I did not try the food here but had to choose something in order to post.

Not sure if I'll go back..

It's an option if you're hungry..
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 1:53am [Dine in]

This is the place to go if you are hungry and not picky. They are also cash-only, so be prepared for that as I was a little surprised in this day and age, that businesses were cash only.

However, the little booths are fun and sometimes can get a little loud depending on who is seated close by, but this only add to the ambience I think.

There is certainly plenty to choose from this menu, but the food tends to be on the greasy side, mostly fried. They do bring you the food all at once and if you're not paying attention don't bring you all you've ordered.

It's ok, not great, ok.

Growing on me...
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 1:48am [Dine in]

For convenience, this place is hard to beat as it's right on Kingsway. Plentiful parking right behind the restaurant.

Ramie is lovely and always comes to make sure we are ok, as we are now regulars here. We have seen quite the turnover with the staff and there have been some lovely servers and some headscratchers!!!

But the food again is tasty, hot, fresh and makes me want to go back. There is not much to choose from on the dessert menu. They do have a limited selection of wines as well.

For the price of the food and it's quality so far, I'll be back.

Good Food, Good Service
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 1:38am [Dine in]

What I like about Green Basil is the variety in the menu. There is certainly something for everyone here.

The service is wonderful, I've never had an empty class, the food is presented beautifully and served to you with flair.

The portion sizes are a bit on the smaller side for the price involved but the actual food itself is just delicious.

I always look at parking as part of the restaurants' service to its guests and each time I've called to make reservations (recommended), I've always been asked if I need directions and where to park if I'm driving. Proactive service, I LIKE IT!

I've been here 3 or 4 times and always had a good time with different groups of friends and family. I'll certainly be back for more.

Interesting experience.
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 1:30am [Dine in]

Coming from a hotel background, am always interested in seeing what goes on at the hotel's restaurant.

Went to try the Sunday Brunch and found that there was no greeter. When they did arrive, they did apologize for the delay in seating and then seated me promptly.

My server explained about the menu and I ordered the special of the day. My order was mixed up and when brought to the server's attention, it took forever for the plate to come back out.

No one came to explain the delay. The restaurant was quickly being filled hotel guests who had their continental breakfast coupons and were being served faster than I.

It did give me plenty of time to observe my surroundings and I certainly read quite a bit of the complimentary Sunday paper.

I was not a happy customer, told them so and they couldn't care less. So I will not be going back here.

Indian Food???
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 1:24am [Dine in]

Not so much but definitely food with an East African flavour to it. This place has a more colonial feel to it with it's staid decor.

Don't think I'll be back here, tried their buffet once and was not impressed and frankly was wondering what the fuss is all about.

Saffron down the street on Kingsway is a tad better than this place.

I have mixed feelings about this place. The food here taste good but I am not sure if I like leaving here with the Indian food smell lingering over me...

I've tried the a la carte as well as the buffets and feel that the buffet gives you enough choice. However, if you go here frequently, you'd notice they don't change the items on their buffet often, so it can get repetitive.

They have the standard Indian fare. The service is usually by family members, so depending on who is working it could range from odd as someone else has commented to very friendly and informatiive.

The decor is nice enough and the location is convenient, though parking can be a bit dicey in the day time. You could park accross at Old Orchard and walk across.

They also now do pizza on the side with some interesting toppings.

I'm certainly no big fan of this place and won't rave about it, it's just alright for me..

This place is great if you live in the neighbourhood and need some coffee late at night or a little bit of a nibble..

The free wireless is awesome and the decor is comfy. The staff seem friendly enough and there is always a huge crowd of people here (mainly student types).

Nice addition to the neighbourhood, certainly better than having Shaw Cable there ;)

Will be back here.

Will not be going back EVER!
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 12:59am [Dine in]

My experience started and ended right at the door of this place. I did not even get to try the food and so will not comment on that.

There was no host to greet you so I had to ask the sushi chef to find someone to seat me. The server seated me and promptly disappeared for more than 5 minutes, this was at 4pm on a weekday afternoon! There were 2 other people here.

So after checking the menu and asking for one thing to be changed prior to ordering was told that it could be accomodated.

I had enough and left. So I still did not taste the food.

Based on this miserable service, I would not recommend going here nor will I EVER be back.

I like it here..
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 12:53am [Dine in]

I work in the area and we go to lunch here about once a week. The servers know all of us and take very good care of us. We also use them for our work functions.

The food is plentiful, the price is reasonable, the service is quick and efficient which is what you want when you're in and out for lunch.

They are also very quick with all the take-out if you preorder. Try and get there before 1pm as the local school break for lunch at that time and this places get hit!

We've also used the booths and are too busy having a good time to notice the sticky floor (we've also never taken off our shoes!).

Overall, a decent place and I'd go back.

Always had a good experience here..
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 12:41am [Dine in]

I've been to Red Door several times and have consistently had good experiences here.

The lanterns actually drew me into the restaurant and the patio is actually quite fun in the summertime with so much of activity going on in that neighbourhood.

The parking situation is horrendous as it takes a long time to find any here.

The food has always been good. We've tried the Spicy Eggplant dish that is one of my favourites. The mussels have been good. The Indian curries were not quite to our taste but tasty none the less.

The servers have always been attentive but we've always been there for lunch, so can't quite comment on the evening service.

The decor - well what can I say, I AM a fan! Love it!

I'll certainly be back as I've not had any reason to complain in all the times I've been.

Reminded me of Juhu Beach
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 12:34am [Dine in]

I just went with a friend of mine who has never tried South Indian food and having heard good things about this place, decided to try it out. I certainly did not expect it to be as "homey" as it looks, but the food takes precedence over the decor.

The chutneys were fantastic. Our server was one of the managers and he was very helpful in explaining dishes to my friend and also recommending menu items for me to try. I asked for the dahi vada as it was not on the menu and it was delicious.

The Madras Special Dosa was really spicy and a huge portion. I actually took it home with me. My friend tried the Vindaloo Dosa (never would have thought to put these two together!) but it was surpringly tasty.

We were never rushed and sat right by the window so enjoyed looking out at the passersby. As an added treat, if you a Cricket fan, then they have matches contstantly going on the TV in the dining room.

Overall, a very nice place for a Sunday Brunch.
