Under New Management
Submitted Thursday, September 6, 2012 - 10:49am [Dine in]

We've been eating here for a few years now and have always had an excellent experience. However, recently they underwent a management change and while you expect there to be some growing pains, it has been long enough to see that their basic quality is going down. We've been back a few times now since the change and each visit has been successively less impressive.

The service, while never overwhelming, is now quite slow and sullen. We don't usually manage to get a smile from whoever our server of the evening is until near the end of the meal. Not a big deal, but part of a trend. Where the restaurant was usually quite full before, it's slowly getting emptier. Their take-out business seems to be solid still, and that seems to be where their focus is, although my own experience was not good, ending with having to go back to work with no lunch at all because they were so slow and full of excuses. If you eat in, be prepared to hear the telephones, front and back, ringing LOUDLY. I guess it's important to get those take-out orders, since that's all the business they're doing now.

To the food - very inconsistent - even on a single plate of squid. Some was cooked perfectly, some far overdone and still others quite raw! The teppan platter is supposed to come with filet mignon but it looked and tasted more like mystery meat the last time. The noodles we ordered were definitely a smaller portion than we've ever been served before. And finally, the peking duck - always a stand out, and still possibly the best thing on the menu... I have no complaints about that except for the carving. I'm sorry Raymond, you just looked like an amateur hacking away at it. No finesse at all and we ended up with very large pieces that left us feeling short-changed as each of the five of us were lucky if we even got two bites. Best of luck in the future. We'll be missing this place until we hear there has been some kind of turn-around.

not what it used to be

As a long time customer of this establishment (from the time when they were still in Guildford Mall!), I cannot recommend it. The food is passable, but the more Vietnamese restaurants I eat at, the less interesting this place is. And the service has become unforgivably rude. Call for takeout and get hung up on? Get told you cannot have what you would like for no real reason? Call for directions to the restaurant and get a lecture?? Forget about asking for extra *anything*, regardless of what you're willing to pay. You get what they want to give you, and that's the end of it. Save your money and try somewhere else. In the long run, you'll be happy you did.

We eat here so often it really does feel like eating in our own home. The first time we ate here I was truly impressed with the burger I had ordered. It's easily the best, biggest, juiciest hamburger to be found anywhere around here, and is still a big part of the reason I keep coming back, nearly 8 years later.

The service is one of the first things I noticed. Prompt, friendly, and always full of helpful suggestions when we're undecided. We didn't wait forever for a server to notice our drinks needed refilling - we had the refill before we even needed to ask. At that time in Langley that kind of service was unheard of! We liked it. And it kept us coming back time and time again. More than once we walked out of other restaurants that offered no service at all and found ourselves here. Admittedly, as with anywhere you go all the time, there will be up days and down days. But even on their worst days, the staff is unfailingly friendly and the food is always delicious.

If I had a complaint about Milestone's it would be that the menu is somewhat uninspired and doesn't change very often. Fortunately their seasonal specials make up for that most of the time. Now if they could just get their bartender to learn how to make a Mojito...

Overall - a lovely place to spend a couple of hours in the company of good friends and family while having something tasty to eat, whether it's a burger, steak or their fabulous flame-grilled prawns. Just go!

p.s. guys - I still miss the Chicken Reggiano.

After eating here a couple of times I highly recommend the menu and food. Everything we've tried has been artfully presented and completely delicious and there aren't many places around here that offer as much variety as Sonoma Grill. The staff is friendly, but service has been a hit-and-miss experience. Obviously Christmas isn't the best time to judge a busy restaurant, but they were kind enough to fit us in when they were booked up (though the restaurant was empty when we arrived - right at opening time). Even at quieter times, however, the staff has been somewhat inattentive. All in all, the food is what keeps bringing us back, as it's one of the best values in Langley. It's a comfortable, reasonably priced fine dining experience that will suit nearly any occasion.
