Go for a chat with the neighbour!

Nice place to go for a bite to eat and strike up conversations with the folks next door. A friend and I went there on a week night evening after we couldn't get into a couple of other places. The place was packed, but they sat us at the bar and we had a table by the time our drinks arrived.

Tables are very close, so you'll know who did what last night! But, at the same time, atmosphere is friendly like a tapas bar. We liked the food, generous portions, and nice presentation. I wasn't blown away by my meal of halibut and shrimp tacos - it was ok. But, my friend's almond & coconut crusted fish with yuca and yam fries was very tasty.

I think they need to pay more attention to the 'Mexican' flavor of the food and service. Our waitress was serving the entire place and forgot about us for about 15 minutes before she got out orders. And when she did show up, she spent another 10 minutes chatting with the regulars until we asked her to take our order.

All in all, nice place. I'd go again.

Nice place, but false advertisement

A fried and I tried out this place during 2007 Dine Out. The place has great ambiance, the service was good, the wine list was outstanding. The food was good, but it wasn't what they had advertised in their 'dne-out' menu. Replacing lamb shank with braised portabello mushrooms is not a little change. This is the second place I've gone to (during the dine-out) that has changed their menu. I think restaurants either have to stick to what they advertise, or not put out a prix-fix menu at all. I picked this place because I wanted to try it, but also because I liked what I saw on the menu. In spite of that, I enjoyed myself and I would go back to this place one day.

Didn't live up to the hype

I was at Gastropod for the first night of Dine Out 2007. The menu was different from what they have advertised for the Dine Out - under the $25 section. They've actually separated the menu into $25 and $35 sections, and pretty much everything that they had under $25 online is now under $35. When we asked our waitress about it she said it's because the menu was sent to the Dine Out before the restaurant even opened. I didn't think that was a fair justification and the restaurant didn't offer to honor their advertisement. On both menus they had seafood mains or appies that you had to pay an extra $10 for...

The wine list was good. Good options, good range of prices.

The atmosphere is so so... they've gone for a minimalist decor, but it doesn't work. It lacks character and ambience.

My partner and I both had the $25 menu: we had oysters (2 of them) and a beef stew for appies, which was ok. the beef stew was something I can make at home any day, any time. For mains we had the wild mushroom risotto and the chicken with Israelie couscous. The risotto was very watery (you needed a spoon to eat it) and the chicken was bland. Desert options were rice pudding, banana bread (deep fried) with cardemon ice-cream, or brownie with ice cream - not the fine-dining desert options you would expect.

Service was ok. Our waitress was nice but wasn't particularly knowledgable or experienced and didn't offer us any advice on the wine .

Overall, I found the food was ordinary. There was nothing special about any of the courses. People at the table next to us had the same opinion. The service was ok but nothing stood out either. The space between tables is fairly tight. Luckily the waiters/waiteresses were all slender enough to fit in between the tables!

Would I go back? No. The place didn't live up to their claims nor had enough umph. For $120 for dinner for 2 I expect to get much better food and ambience.
