A fallow up review means a changed perception
Submitted Friday, January 15, 2010 - 8:22pm [Dine in]

We decided to go back and see how things were going here.I guess they were losing money on the all you can eat setup.
Although still available, things have changed. No more unlimited sashimi,.tempura had become thick and dough-y,and rolls were largely made with filler ingredients.
So,on a whole,while not terribly disgusting,it was a tad dissapointing.
IF in new west, check it out,but expect usual run of the mill sushi.

An old favorite...15 years later!
Submitted Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - 1:00am [Dine in]

Yes,it was 15 years since my last visit, and I was pretty damn suprised.
Alot has changed>some menu items have gone, but the food is still consistent in quality.
This is not your fancy restaurant, but an way above average truck stop/diner.
Open late,clean and casual.
The food was very good, kalimari was tasty, beef dip was great, and the veal cutlets perfect,Just the way I remembered.

These kinds of places with a little bit of everything on the menu are hard to come by,usually late night eateries are of the asian variety.Thankfully, when the desire for steak and pasta hits you,K&D is there to satisfy.

What is going on in this town???
Submitted Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 5:08pm [Dine in]

My God!! Even the old stand bys are going down the pooper!!
THis used to be one of the places you would go to get consistant chinese food.

Holy freakin wow.
Service...You want to talk about language barrier?? I couldnt even get a diet coke ordered!!

And the food was crap. All around crap. Wonton soup had a strange taste to the wontons....broth was flavorless.Ginger beef was sour, and not remotely spicy.
None of us at our table finished our dishes..And I usually eat everything.

this place has become a stereotypical, dirty, dingy greasy chinese crap hut.
I don't know what has happened here. But that was absolutley the last time I will step foot in here.

Especially with all the competition in the hood, you think they would at least ry to clean it up a bit.

solid chinese in New West
Submitted Monday, September 14, 2009 - 3:39am [Dine in]

Being tired of Hon's,A friend and I decided on trying the Richman for takeout.
Let me start by saying it's nice to see a place that actually fills the takeout containers so much, that they must be held closed by an elastic band.
We ordered the dinner for three, which lets you pick any 3 items on the menu, and comes with egg rolls and chow mein or rice.
It was by far the best deal I have had in a long time. 40 bucks with tip,and enough food for the next day.
the chow mein was cooked well, the almond chicken was great, the squid was perfect, and the dry ribs were awesome.
A definite place to order from again.
Delivery was quick and free.

I dont see what the hype is about
Submitted Tuesday, September 8, 2009 - 10:12pm [Dine in]

So,in all my years of hitting the PNE,this was my first Jimmy's lunch experience.
In two words,Big Deal.
They put orange pop on the onions, So what.
Now,I understand that the PNE is pricey.Lived here all my life, and go every year. So,I get that part.
But,come on.A 6 dollar hamburger gets you onions mustard and relish.Thats it.
And really,it was nothing great. They can say all they want that they bake the buns fresh, and they use their own patties, but I call B.S.
Tasted like your typical low end frozen patty, with your typical Weston bakery bun.
White spot on the grounds would be a way better choice.

AYCE Dim Sum lunch
Submitted Tuesday, September 8, 2009 - 10:05pm [Dine in]

Me and a couple friends went by here for the all you can eat dimsum lunch today.
Small place,quite busy.
IT was quite good, and the selection was fairly wide.
it was roughly 15.00 per person.Pop was 1.75 a can.
parking is a bit of a chore. Located right next to the bank on the north east corner of Kingsway and Joyce.

Waitress, can you please put your cel phone down when you serve us?
Submitted Thursday, August 6, 2009 - 12:42am [Dine in]

So me an 2 buddies go into Kisha today. We get the AYCE lunch menu.
Small selection,and nothing exciting.
So we put our first order in,and as it comes,of course, there were items missing.
The Tuna sashimi had that weird kinda wet sourness to it,you know what i mean?Kind of like its been on a counter too long.
Gommae,nothing special.
Salmon Karrage, big pieces of bones in it.Not exactly the most appetizing thing.
Beef teriyaki, really fatty, same with the chicken.
Tonkatsu was ok.
Now,lets talk about our waitress.
She would have been happier throwing our food at us from the kitchen, seeing how she tossed it on the table at us.
Then, the capper, coming to the table talking on her phone, while we tried to order stuff!!!
What the hell????

Then, she comes and says,oh,I going now,so you can pay bill now.
So ,the bill was 43.00,and I put 60 down.
She asked,you want change back?
Hell yes,I say.
She brings the change back, and HOVERS over the table, waiting for her tip!!!
When she sees I wont be leaving the tip until we are done eating, she moves to behind the counter, but still keeps watching the damn tip tray.
As soon as I put a tip on the tray, like a vulture, she comes and scoops it up.
Screw this place.
There are way too many better places in this area to have AYCE sushi.

Also,no soap in the soap dispenserd in bathroom,so I can imagine what that means in the kitchen...

Stay away,for your own good.

Remodelled and back on the throne!
Submitted Tuesday, August 4, 2009 - 10:09pm [Dine in]

Yup.I went back, and was very happy.
The room has been updated, and the food quality is back.
Same with the speedy service.
Im glad they did whatever they did,and now,the Castle can one again be my late night haunt for Chinese.
I had the beef and broccoli, very tasty,as well as the house special chow mein, with soft noodles.
The deep fried squid with salt and pepper is always a favorite!

T & T Supermarket Deli179 Keefer Place, Vancouver
You would think for a Chines restaurant in an asian supermarket,it would have a wow factor!
Submitted Tuesday, August 4, 2009 - 9:41pm [Dine in]

What a huge dissapointment.
YOu would seriously think, that a Chinese deli,in a Chinese supermarket, would know how to make Chinese dishes.
This place(and all the other T&T deli counters for that matter) was one step bleow the Chinese Smogasbord places of old.
The selection varies, but it is a rotation of the same items.
Sweet sour pork? all bones.
Prawns are dried out.
rice is dry.
chow mein is flavorless,as is all the selections here.
I wouldnt reccomend this place to anyone, and I personally have taken food from here at least a dozen times, each time hoping for an improvement.
But nope.
And I'm not one of those picky fancy pants Gourmands.
Im a regular joe that likes chinese now and then.

The BBQ pork ,chinese sausage and duck is great,if you eat it hot.
It tastes off after reheating.
The dim sum counter is average, with the regular sui mai and har gow.
Price is not so good for what you get.
Not outstanding by anymeans.

AYCE fish and chips for 9.50 including pop!!
Submitted Monday, August 3, 2009 - 7:17pm [Dine in]

I guess I'm not as picky as the other "connesieurs" on this site, but dammit all if this isn't one of the best deals to be had in town!!
What kind of fish is it?? Who cares!!!
It's bloody tasty,it comes with bottomless pop and you have a choice of whether you want more fries or not!!
The rest of the menu is tasty too..If you want oceanwise, hand fed fish, this isnt for you.
But you want to stuff your face for cheap, here is your place.

Now,I guess i'm not a "gourmet" or a food critic like the rest of these idiots on here, but I know good food when I have it.
Lupo is great.
Everything I had was tasty and fresh.
Yes,you pay a bit more,but so what.
This isnt freakin Antons,ok?
Splurge a bit,and treat yourself.
The location is fantastic. An authentic 1905 house in the heart of Vancouver.
You cant see enuff of this.

Top Gun Sushi At The Quay810 Quayside Drive, #230, New Westminster
A HUGE dissapointment.Hands down worst.
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 10:28pm [Dine in]

Myself and 2 friends decided to hit this place up.
After about 20 minutes figuring how to get into this place (the mall is locked up tighter than any prison) we sat down.
They offer 2 menus,a "deluxe" and a regular.
Tthe only difference I noticed was unlimited sashimi and the "salad bar".
Salad bar.Gross. Shell on cold prawns. Never seen these at a Japanese place before.
Iceberg lettuce,edamame,and..Kimchi?
Go figure.
Anyways,on to the main food.
Good God.
Rolls were sick.Like the kind that have been left out for too long.
Not to mention the $3.50 EACH glass of soda!!!
So,for 3 people, each with the deluxe menu and 3 soft drinks,a large and small Sake,$150.00.
Screw that.
I would rather have paid the chinese family fishing from the pier to slice up some of their Fraser river catch, than eat here again.
Obvioulsly people from New West have lower standards than anywhere else.

Or something like that greets you as you walk in.
Being the only Caucasians in the restaurant(and the whole mall for that matter) we felt like steaks at a vegetarian picnic.

But we were greeted warmly and sincerley, and took a seat at the bar.
We ordered from the daily special menu, and regular mieny, and were extremely pleased.
good portions,great presentation,and very flavorful.
The tuna sashimi comes with different dipping sauces, the karrage were crisp and not greasy.
The favorites were the Ebi mayo, and the diced chicken.
bill came to 90.00 with tip for the two of us,but we were stuffed and happy.

Now,I knew going into this place, that I wasnt going to get Top quality food....
But what they had was absolute garbage.
The family of 6 screaming children was a great start.
The "Sushi" was gross, bland, and the sashimi was an unknown piece of fish.
Not one chow mein dish in the line, but lots of deep fried meatball things.
Terrible.I wouldnt recommend this to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

This place is now called the St regis grill, and is great.
The menu has changed, they serve breakfast, and have a more continental feel as opposed to a italian vibe.
A great place to come before during and after a game, located right next to the skytrain.
highly recommended.
Great steaks,and HUGE beers.Really big.
Good selections of wines also.

Where to go for a quick Sushi Fix!
Submitted Sunday, March 1, 2009 - 4:51am [Dine in]

I can't believe people complain about getting too much food for your dollar!
This place is an absolute must if you want fast sushi to go.
If they run out of what you want, they will make it for you on the fly.
(they make all the food fresh, but popular items run out quickly.)
What a value as well.
And do take advantage of their japanese "deli" if you will.Fresh Surimi, delicious Ocean Delight Crab sticks,as well as the delicious seaweed salad.
A definate stop for any Japanese food lover.
And stop complaining about getting too much for your buck.

Submitted Friday, February 13, 2009 - 3:13am [Dine in]

I went here after deciding against the other places in this stripmall.
WE walked in,grabbed a seat. Right away the waiter came with green tea.
I ordered the dynaite roll,spider roll,prawn tempura,gommae and miso.
Excellent all the way around.
My friend ordered california rolls, chicken teriyaki, gommae and gyoza.
Once again, solid all the way through.
We also recieved a complimentary house salad.A nice touch.
They have daily lunch take out specials,or you can oder a la carte.

Roughly 50 bucks for two very happy customers.
Would definatley return.

Walking into the Slocan is like going back in time.
Seeing as its been here since 1974,thats exactly what you feel.
It's like being at your relatives house for dinner. You get greeted warmly at the door, and your coffee is always attended to.
I had the Monte Cristo which was solid. The gravy was fantastic for my real mashed potatoes.
There are no sommeliers or maitre 'd's, bu there is just wht you would want from a family diner, solid comfort food, with friendly service.
And in this day of chain or corporate eateries, you cant put a price on that.

Pho Kim Penh Xe Lua540 West Broadway, Vancouver
better late night than Dennys of McD's
Submitted Friday, September 19, 2008 - 6:07pm [Dine in]

Went here late last night.
The service was fast, howver, she added all the springrolls to two plates(there were 9 of us) so we had to split em up.
The pho arrived with a big sticky ball of noodles in the middle of the bowl, which means to me that they portion all the noodles out,and let them sit iin the bowl, then add the soup. Not exactly the freshest way of doing it.

Overall,it is what it is,a vitnamese greasy spoon.
Take it for its face value, and there will be no dissapointments.
