slow poor service overshadows the food quality
Submitted Sunday, May 8, 2011 - 10:10pm [Dine in]

Wife and I ordered the "jzol myun." It took a very long time to come to our table. This dish is a cold noodle and vegetable dish. They give you a red spicy sauce to put on the noodles as you like. This ran out and the replacement given was a different sauce. After I put it on the noodles, I realized it was a different sauce. Advised waiter. He insisted it was the right one. It was clearly not but we didn't argue.

Overall the place appeared under-staffed, the service was poor and food arrived very slowly.

The food itself looked and tasted good.

I would not return however.

first time will be last time

The wife and i decided to go out for Japanese but didn't want to spend a lot of money. This place looked inviting from the outside and was welcoming inside. The false sky and the mirror wall made it look a lot bigger than it really is.

The food was pretty standard for average Japanese food. The 40% off after 7pm was also inviting but only included a very limited amount of items that are already fairly cheap. Not much to gain here with this deal.

The service is the reason I am taking the time to write this. It is poor. When we went, the restaurant was nearly empty. We saw our food after it was prepared waiting to be delivered to us. It was sitting there for quite a while before the waitresses brought it over. There was no reason for the delay. When we couldn't wait any longer, we simply got it ourselves. They didn't seem to care.

We will not be returning.

We figured we would try one of these ramen places on Denman. My wife had some charcoal (black-coloured soup) ramen. I had the spicy miso chicken.

When we wordered, the waitress tried to upsell us on the ramen by trying to add eggs or gyoza. She seemed dissapointed when we didn't add those items. It's about $10 for a bowl of ramen. I also know that ramen is extremely cheap to buy and has a lot of calories and no nutrients.

When the food came my wife didn't like her charcoal ramen so I ate it. It didn't taste good. The spicy chicken miso ramen was marginally better. It was not spicy. Both dishes were very oily tasting.

Overall I would not recommend this place. Food is expensive, service nothing special, and it doesn't taste good. If i eat junk food at least I want it to taste ok.

Oh and also they don't accept visa.

grat little breakfast place in the westend
Submitted Tuesday, March 31, 2009 - 5:35am [Dine in]

I have tried many little West-End breakfast cafes. I seem to enjoy this one the best. It's in a great location with plenty of free 2 hr street parking available.

It's the perfect place to go for all-day breakfast when you wake up at noon on the weekend hung-over. Portions are good and prices are all under $10 except one dish. The service is the best part. The female waitress was very accommodating. She brought everything out to our table, offered us refills on coffee, and didn't bug us too much or rush us.

I look forward to my next visit!

Zakkushi Charcoal Grill823 Denman St, Vancouver
rushed izakaya
Submitted Saturday, February 21, 2009 - 7:47pm [Dine in]

I have been to Zakkushi many times and spent a lot of money there. Our bills for two people are never below the $120 range. We keep coming back as the food is very unique and the taste cannot be replicated at any other charcoal diner. The food is good. However it's not all about food.

The atmosphere is very casual yet loud. Many international students come there to spend their parents' money from overseas. The staff often join their patrons for a shot or two and I have no problem with that. They do however mess up the bill quite often, so it needs to be checked.

The big complaint I have with this restaurant is the fact they want a fast turnover of tables especially on busy nights. They basically want you to eat and pay your bill. The part I don't get is that the staff were familiar with us and even rushed us! Bringing the bill is one thing, but actually going as far as asking you to pay and leave is another! I was shocked at this as we were customers who spent a lot of money there and often!

I understand that they want fast turnover to bring in cash. But if we are spending a lot of money there then why not keep us there???

Because of this its hard to come back.
