Moby Dick Restaurant15479 Marine Drive, White Rock
A taste of old White Rock

I'm not quite sure why I like this restaurant. There are many reasons to not like it - the fish and chips are just so-so, the restaurant is dated and looks like it needs a good scrubbing and the line-up on a hot summer day is crazy! That said, there's something about this place that keeps me coming back. Maybe it's because this is one of the last vestiges of what White Rock used to be like before the developers moved in. Its a homey, friendly welcoming place where they give you 3 pieces of fish when you order 2 and they make their own tartar sauce. Your kids are welcome and they'll have fun looking at all the whale stuff and reading the funny signs posted on the walls while waiting for dinner to arrive. Afterwards, you get to pick your own sucker out of the dish by the cash register (the red ones always go first). The fish is just "fish", no claims of cod or halibut, it's some sort of white mystery fish, but it's good!

Beecher Street Cafe12302 Beecher Street, White Rock
Slow service, mediocre food

I don't know what's happened to the Beecher Street Cafe. It used to be a great restaurant. However, we were very disappointed on our last visit. The food was okay, it might have even been very good, but we were so frustrated by the bad service, that it ruined the meal.

Our waiter made the occasional appearance at other tables. He brought them water, menus and bread. He even took their orders and brought them food. However, we were pretty much ignored. Eventually, he took our order and within a couple of hours our food arrived. In the meanwhile, we had ordered a beer and a cocktail and after a while they were brought to us - warm!

We were in the restaurant for close to 3 hours and in that time we had 1 round of warm drinks and our entrees (no appetizers, no bread, no after dinner coffee or dessert). Our water glasses were filled once and then left to sit empty (even though we asked several times for more water).

On top of the bad service, the restaurant was very hot - no a/c, not even a fan! It was a dreadful experience and we will not be returning. Too bad, it used to be a favourite place.
