Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant4989 Victoria Dr., Vancouver
very bad service, decent food
Submitted Friday, May 29, 2009 - 4:20pm [Dine in]

Saturday night dinner at Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant. We had a dinner of 8, so we did advance booking for 3 days in advance. When everyone came, we had to wait for an extra 34 minutes! Not only we had to wait outside, because the waiting area is so small that you can fit 5 people maximum. It was a frustrating start.

When we were seated, we started with 1 pot of tea. And when we ask for another pot, the waiters started to ignore us despite we had a table of 8.

The food is decent. Do not expect it to be fancy or healthy. But the food have decent portion and food is good.

However, the place is small and very cozy. Folks siting inside will not expect to come out until the end of the dinner.

I would recommend for take out or if you go in a party less than 4.
But do not even think about banquet or going as a group.

Bowl of Stars3608 Kingsway, Vancouver
GOOD service, local presentation

Waiters are friendly and welcoming. You will find the place is well air conditioned. But parking is hard to find, since they do not have their own parking space. Be extra caution when parking along Kingsway, because I almost had my car towed by the city of Vancouver during rush hour.
The food is local, and simple oriented. I do think it is a good place to sit and chat with friends. You can buy a $9 +tax and tip non alcoholic drink (they do not have alcoholic license) there and sit for an hour without much disturbance. The fruit tea I ordered is too sweet, and I asked for some ice and extra tea to weaken the drink, they are nice enough to charge only half the price for the service.
The food they serve is China style, with a lot of LARGE intestines from a good mix of cows, pigs and ducks. To your surprise, when mixed with the oiled cucumber, it actually taste quite good if you stop thinking about where it came from.
The wait time for the food is terrible though. It is wonderful to go on our own or with a friend. But if you have a group going together, they would never have the food come out at once. Between each dish, you will be expected to wait at least 7 to 10 minutes even if you are the only group in the whole restaurant. I think this restaurant is operated by a couple of 2.

Overall, the food they serve have solid taste. But it is too China styled and not too many choices.
