A wonderful Thai surprise for me
Submitted Saturday, October 9, 2010 - 11:31am [Dine in]

Spicy and Delicious! This was a wonderful surprise for me. A friend here in town asked if I wanted to go for supper. She suggested the Talay Thai restaurant from all the rave reviews that she had read and thought I would like it since I am from Thailand. I have to admit I have yet to find a Thai restaurant in Vancouver that makes truly authentic Thai food. Almost all of it tastes like Chinese food with some Thai spices in it.

We arrived and it was busy, apparently it is usual, but we did not have to wait too long for a table. In fact, they made a couple of places for us right away. The ambience is so nice, so cozy and it reminds me of home in Lamphun.

Upon seating by a pleasant staff member, we reviewed the menu. The menu is so beautiful with so much nice artwork. And the baby elephant in the front is so cute; I think he wants to go for a swim at the beach. I guess that is why it is called "Thai Seaside" restaurant.

There is a lot to choose from this restaurant. Being pure Thai, I personally like spicy, so we went for a curry dish and pad thai and some chicken cashew nut stirfry. Also had tom yam soup for starters... it is so creamy and thick; it feels good in the mouth and going down. Thai House makes theirs so watery and it tastes like they put too much corn starch or something in it, maybe to make it thicker. This was thick with "kathi" coconut milk, just like it should be.

The menu provides an abundance of options; from sea-creatures to bamboo, piquant to creamy, there is a lot of taste of Thai to suit just about every appetite and palate. When the "double" portion of our group arrived we chatted and within moments our server arrived, pen poised for order taking. Our two friends opted to share the veggie green curry and basil meat stirfry with eggplant.

The meals didn't take long to arrive and were presented at perfectly palatable temperatures with crisp vegetables and zippy spice enough to make my taste buds swoon. It made me homesick, the first time a Thai restaurant in Canada has done that to me. The portions were ample and reasonably priced, while the service remained attentive throughout our stay.

The dishes at Talay That are flush with flavor and exceptionally balanced between sweet and salty. The space was clean and easy, and the service was attentive and professional. And of course, the company was spot on. A lovely dining experience indeed. This is definitely a place I will certainly return to this Marpole resto.
