West is the best?
Submitted Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - 2:00pm [Dine in]

So my partner and I went to West for a private function put on by the BCWAS.

The kitchen prepared a 5 course tasting menu accompanied with wine from Black Hills.

Ambiance: Fresh and modern. This was my first time here.

Food: Every dish was well thought out in terms of pairing with the wine. In many cases it made the wine exceptional! Presentation was interesting, but I am not a fan of over the top presentation and I think David is pushing it a bit. From what I have herd he has only recently taken over as Executive Chef and I think it may take time for him to hit his stride.
Service: Exceptional for the most part. Water was filled often, bread was filled often, butter was perfect temp. Only gripe is that I was early and really would have liked a pre-dinner drink.....

here is what we had

Overall: We will come back for sure. I really want to try their cocktails as other reviewers have indicated they are exceptional!

DB Bistro Moderne2551 West Broadway, Vancouver
Um, is this really a DB restaurant.....
Submitted Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - 1:36pm [Dine in]

Ok, so I have not submitted a review in a long while. But last night I had dinner at DB for my fathers birthday.

I had been wanting to try DB since it opened, but have not had the occasion to go.
Well opportunity came knocking so I took advantage.
there were 10 of us and all of us are foodies to some degree.

Appitizers: I ordered the Gruyère & Smoked Bacon Tartes Flambées to share and the Chef provided us with an additional Smoked Bacon & Onion. These were both good, albeit very similar in flavor....

Mains: Two of my companions are on strict diets and right off the bat this was a problem. They were told that the kitchen would accommodate their requests, but that they do not normally do substitutions. Fine. Then a few more people in our party had some requests as well, one didn't want any pasta with the salmon, but instead more veggies, the waiter was hesitant, but complied.

My self and 2 others ordered the DB burger. This is a top sirloin burger filled with braised short ribs and black truffles. MMMMMMM, it comes medium rare, fine with me, but the other two ordered it medium.

The food arrived and immediately there were problems. One of the people on a strict diet had made specific requests and the kitchen still prepared the meal not keeping these in mind. the two DB burgers that were ordered medium came back medium rare and one was 10 mins late! Furthermore, the one who ordered the salmon with no pasta and extra veg instead, got very little in compensation not to mention the serving of salmon was incredible small even for a fine dining restaurant.

From my understanding the rest of the diners meals were prepared properly.

Desert: since it was a birthday we all had cake brought in by us, but were charged $3/plate......

Service: Our waiter started off ok and through the night he was around to fill water glasses, but never came back to see how the meal was or ask if we needed anything else. He also neglected to take drink orders as our guests arrived, instead we had to flag him down. Furthermore, the restaurant was empty and we had to flag him down to get bread and the bread turned out to be room temp and the butter was frozen....wtf.

Overall this was not a good experience. While some of our companions were satisfied with their meals, the ones who had made specific requests were appalled to learn that the kitchen did not allow or like to accommodate specific requests. Furthermore, when you order a $30 burger shouldn't it come how you want it cooked and on time......

Will not return, there are too many better restaurants in Vancouver to bother giving this a second chance!

Went a few weeks back. I hadnt been in years si I didnt know what to expect, but was pleasently surprised.

I mostly just enjoyed the food as the service was a bit lacking. Our server was a bit slow out of the gate but by the end of the night was almost on the ball.

They missed an appy and screwed up the wine paring with the set menu.

overall the food was great, go for the food and you will be fine.

The set menu is a good value.

Ok, so I go here from time to time and I am always impressed with the quality of food.

They have outstanding Sashimi of all sorts, not to mention a variety of fish you dont see at typical sushi restaurants.

Keep in mind that the only hot food they have is miso soup, so dont go expecting any hot food.

Their menu may seem a bit extensive and intimidating, so i recommend that you sit at the bar and talk to the sushi chef about what you like and he will recommend dishes for you.

here is a list of suggestions, tuna/salmon sashimi, salmon don, smoke salmon nigiri, negitoro roll/cone, any of the fish specials, avacado salad, avao-q roll, i can go on, but i wont.

if you go for lunch go before noon, as it gets busy because its quite small, i have not been for dinner so i dont know the timing.

good food, feels like I went back in time

Had dinner with friends and family. Service was good, we had to ask for the basics once then they were on top of it. Lobster Bisque, ok I love this stuff, but this was the saltiest I have ever had. The salt left my mouth feeling almost raw. ther est of the food was decent, nothing inventive. Meats were well prepared, cooked to order, sides were good, sauces were excelllent, but some found food over salted.

only major downside was the decor, I dont think it has ever been updated since it opened in 1988.

I would go back, but not any time soon.

Went for lunch, very busy place, but well worth the wait. took a seat at the window. We shared a two piece halibut and chips with extra coleslaw.
Fish is in a light tempura style batter, I prefer this to most beer batter. We opted for the yam fries instead, man they are tasty, served with a curry mayo, mmmm. they do charge an extra $1 for sharing, small price to pay. Oh, the coleslaw is very nice, light on the dressing, defiantly made fresh
Staff is very nice and friendly, the sever dropped one of our pieces when serving us, but had a new piece in minutes. no big deal.

Went for dinner, was surprised to find such a small space. we had a reservation, only waited a few minutes for the table, server was excellent, excellent knowledge of both the menu and wine. All of our dishes were well executed, Lamb was perfect, well seasoned, cooked to perfection. halibut was also cooked perfectly and the sauce was very nice. The best Creme Brule we have ever had. Will be hard to find one better, but we will keep looking.

recommend this for any occasion, staff is unpretentious and knowledgeable.

Went for dinner on a sat. We were seated right away. Not many good tables in the place for an intimate dinner. ours was right next to the bar...server was very knowledgeable on both food and wine. We started with the Spider Roll and Endive Salad, Both were tasty, the Spider roll was well put together, the lobster was perfectly cooked, overall the flavors were mediocre. The Endive Salad waws great, nice roquefort dressing, sprinkled with candied almonds, great flavour and the endive was incredible crisp and juciy.
Mains: Lamb three ways, excellent, cooked to order, great flavour all around. Spot Prawn and Scallops, again cooked perfectly, Scallops melted in your mouth, risotto was well seasoned, love the lemon powder!
Dessert: Creme Brule was ok, nothing special.

Will go back in the summer for a table on the patio, hope to see a seasonal menu from Scott, he has the ability to amaze.

I used to go here on a regular basis, but stopped going because I found a new favorite place to go. Irashai, just down the street.

This time around we came here becasue Irashai was too full and we didnt feel like waiting.

My gf ordered a dinner box. Chicken was cold and quite flavorless, the tempura was cold and it looked like the deep fryer was dirty because the batter was quite dark, but it may have just been over cooked. The only good part was the sushi, but even that was just ok.

I ordered a few of their special rolls, Mango roll, Canuck Roll, crazy boy roll, two pieces of salmon and one piece of inari. The rolls were ok, but I found the rice to be quite dry and their sauces were not very tasty.

I went up to pay because we only saw our waitress when she brought the food, she never refilled tea or water. So im standing up there waiting to pay and I get a good look at the kitchen, my god it was filthy, and not just from the days operation, you could see it hadnt had a good cleaning for a long time.

To top it all off both of us got upset tummies!

Never go, its not worth the pain!!!

I thought we were going for a fine dining experience, but this is far from it. The decor is dated (late 80s early 90s) We sat near the window and you could see a layer of dirt on the window ledge, even cobwebs. Service was slow. It wasnt clear if our server was inexperienced or neglectful, but everything took forever.

Took our drink order, came back to tell us they were out of the wine we wanted. There wasnt much else on the wine menu that interested me so we passed on that. Stuck with cocktails. Never refilled my water glass. We had to ask for everything, bread was empty, never refilled, in fact a buser came and took it away......

The appy was good, diner was not so good. My steak was overdone and the veggies were overcooked. the potatoes were the only thing worth eating.....over all the plate was average, nothing to excite the taste buds.

Dessert was a disaster too, I had ice cream with chocolate sauce, easy right? nope, ice cream was old, you know when you leave it in the freezer for months and the ice crystals form. ya that old. The chocolate sauce was not house made, it tasted like the Hersey's from the can, which i used to like as a kid so I guess it wasnt that bad.....

I wouldnt go back unless it was for appys, booze and the live entertainment. That was the highlight, they had live jazz. They were excellent!

Well I found this place by chance and I am very glad I did.
As far as I know they have been around for maybe 4-5 years. (I could be wrong)

My first time there was for dinner and I was blown away by the prices. The Lamb dish is $19! And is as good as one you would find at a much higher price.
The dishes are simple, but made with fresh ingredients and very pleasing to both the eye and the palate.

I found that the service was relativly quick and very easy going.

We came back the second time for brunch and again the food was great. Its better than Joes, Sophies, Rugby Club, Milestones, it even gives Sebs a good run for the money.

All I have to say is you must try it at least once for dinner and once for breakfast. Im sure you will be hooked!

Ive been eating here for sometime now. I must say if you are looking for quality sushi this is the place to come. They have somethign for everyone. From avacado nigiri to bento boxes to various noodle dishes. You cant go wrong. The fresh fish sashimi melts in your mouth.

Keep in mind that this is a small establishment and you may have to wait for a table. Some may say that the service is slow, but they never mention that everything is made to order. Its never prepared before you order it. The Goyza are the best in the city, and they take a long time to make becasue they make them right when you order them. Meaning they stuff them and cook them.

One of my favorite things about this place is their nigiri sushi selection. They have smoked salmon, and even avacado nigiri. great option when you dont want a whole role.

their hot food is also very good. alwasy hot and fresh.

Best time to go for dinner is 6pm if you dont want to wait. Lunch is busy as well, but typically you can always get a table with very littel wait.
