If you want real sushi, go elsewhere
Submitted Thursday, October 15, 2009 - 12:10am [Dine in]

If you want real sushi, go elsewhere. California Roll is not sushi. Sashimi is sushi as well as other raw fish on top of rice. It's true, the rolls are huge and filled with mostly rice. There's a lot of mayo in all their rolls (notice I didnt say sushi because rolls aren't really sushi).

For the price and if you want something, you can't beat them. The rice is typically of consisent quality. The place is owned by Vietnamese, if not mistaken and they're always busy. That should tell you something.

For a chance of pace, try the Taiwanese place next door and their bubble tea.

Cannery is closing in March 2010, Service is Disappointed
Submitted Wednesday, October 14, 2009 - 11:54pm [Dine in]

As the title indicates, the Cannery is shutting down in March 2010. They have not been successful in finding another location.

On a recent visit, we kind of surprised that they served us pretty cold bread, and it was just regular bread. No fancy breads like in the past. Service was mediocre at times. Management didn't seem to care that the service was slow and how we had to ask many, many times for coffee refills. Only after we told the manager about this, did the waiter and busser ask us if we wanted any more coffee.

As far as the food was concerned. It was of solid quality; however, each item had an aroma of a "smelly" fridge. Everything from the vegetables to the desert.

The employees, in general didn't have a bubbly flare or pleasant attitude of years gone by. Something clearly has changed. Could the restuarant closing down have something to do with it? Could it be the management?

It's really a shame that the Cannery location will be gone after the 2010 Olympics, if it isn't already, it should be a heritage location; however it seems like the current employees and management don't care much about it since they'll be applying for EI benefits come spring 2010.

It seems very likely

Samurai Sushi on Fraser6428 Fraser Street, Vancouver

This is not the same one as on 41st and Cambie. The same owner owns the one on Davie. The prices are higher as well than the Cambie location. Still, great Sushi with large pieces. This policy on this site to have a review of at least 200 characters is ridiculous!
