Skip this place- go to Que Pasa!
Submitted Tuesday, June 16, 2009 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

Went here on a recommendation of a friend's friend. I live in Richmond and hadn't heard much about it, which should have been my first clue that I should be skipping this place!
The service was horrible- staff were constantly trying to give people the wrong plate at various tables! We requested water a few times before it came. The waitresses seemed totally clueless and the owner was not even close to being pleasant.
Most of the food was just ok. The guacamole was horrible! Tasted like it was from an old container of something super preserved, found out the chef used tons of mayonnaise in it! Can you say disgusting? The somewhat stale tortilla chips came out in woven baskets that are totally unhygenic.
And the patio sucks because the surround is so high you can't even have a view of Steveston!
Anyways, if you are in Richmond and are craving Mexican- head to Que Pasa's cafeteria (off No.5 & Steveston Hwy)...it is yummy, cheap and has a nice vibe with the friendly lunch ladies and the pinatas all over the place. You can get a much tastier burrito for about $3 vs. the $12 ones here.

Greatest fish & chips...ever!

Yes, it is true!
Apparently it just won an award from Travelocity as one of the best "hidden treasures" to eat at in Canada.
On a sunny day there is nothing better than eating halibut & chips at this place. The tartar sauce is good and we love the coleslaw. Everything tastes fresh and you can see them making it!
I could probably eat here once a week in the summer...wish they had a restaurant as this far exceeds all the others on the pier!

If in Steveston...do as the Stevestonites do.

And eat here. It is good (for Richmond, at least).
The food was decent as most of us enjoyed our meals- parents didn't like the calamari- and they are knowledgeable about these things.
They have some things going for them that work for families- take reservations, have high chairs and friendly servers. Although it does seem like a family-run operation which sometimes means a bit of a wait for food... but overall, I'd say it is worth it.
I liked it better than the glitzy Mad Greek, as this was a bit more homestyle and relaxed. Will return at some point when I crave greek food.

Not bad, not great either...

This place is close so we have been there several times but I have to say food quality is hit and miss (not something restaurants want to mess with). Sometimes everything tastes fresh and delicious and I wonder why we haven't been eating there more, but then the next time things don't taste quite as good as the last time.
Service is usually ok but sometimes the restaurant doesn't seem as clean as it could be...which is a big thing for me (i.e. sticky floors or table).
So, roll the dice and go here or try a place that is dependable such as Ichiro in Steveston or Takeya on the way.

Great place to take out-of-towners...

The views are wonderful if you are on the enclosed patio- you can see the airport, mountains and the river with float planes coming and going.
The food is decent and the specials are usually a great deal. The appy platter is pretty good too.
We bring our child there (during the day) as they have a high chair and you can sit on the enclosed patio. Sometimes this place is crazy busy during the week with all the local flight crews. Get a flying beaver card if you intend to return and get a free meal after buying a few for friends!

I don't get it...

how is this place popular with locals? Well, not with this local. I will stick with the always fresh & good Pajos. The fish and chips here taste like they are pre-cooked and warmed before serving. Not very appetizing. It is a busy place but I really don't get it. There are better places on the pier.

Does it get any better than this?

Honestly, no, it doesn't! We have been going here since it opened its doors on 11th and we are devoted fans of this place. We have eaten all over...and our favourite meals still remain here. Service is impeccable. Yes, there is usually a line-up. We usually curtail this by going to line-up around 5-5:15 and get in right away at 5:30. Once in awhile if we are late, we end up sitting around for awhile (in the bar or patio) but with good company and good snacks that they provide, it is not a bad wait. If they took reservations it would be booked solid for months and none of us regulars could get in when we decide to drop in! Yes, prices increase but as a treat every few months it is more than worth it for this type of food and service! The flavours are so complex and intriguing that it does not have to be "burn-the-roof-off-your-mouth spicy" typical Indian food. If that is what you like- go elsewhere. If you like to try world-class "foodie" food in Vancouver- go here. It seems Vij tries to use seasonal products and typically has a very nice, yet succinct, menu based on a few good vegetarian options and several different meat options- usually chicken, lamb, pork, beef and fish. If they have an appetizer with jackfruit- try it! You will not be disappointed. We never leave even a small smear of curry on our plates as we sop it all up with the delicious naan. The best part of this place is that the owner is usually present- greeting and seating guests. I think this is crucial to any place sustaining its popularity and for the owner to keep up his high standards.
If you are unable to get into Vij's for quite awhile- go to Rangoli- but expect that the food won't be quite as flavourful and high-end as Vij's but is still wonderful on its own accord. Again, don't go if you can't wait for good food or desire standard Indian fare like butter chicken. Go there for delicious food and marinated chicken with ghee dressing!!! It doesn't get any better than this!

Wowzers! We love this place!

We go here often and love it!
It is best in the summer when you can sit outside as the inside can be crowded with not much space between tables.
The food and service is always amazing so we can easily overlook the size of tables. I wish they had a highchair for kiddies but the space constraints are tight! We like the fact that we can bring our daughter with us, as Vij's is out of the question with a toddler. BUT, we do love Vij's for a special night out!!!
Best on the menu: pakoras with the mint-coriander chutney, the mushroom-paneer curry (my husband will revolt in the streets if they take this off the menu!), the dals are very nicely spiced, the rice pudding is amazing, as is the meeti roti. Once in awhile, a portion is a bit small but you can usually request extra naan and rice for no charge.
The take out food is good but not nearly as good of a deal as eating in (the freshest of foods with rice, naan or chutneys).
Highly, highly recommended!!!

Great neighbourhood haunt...
Submitted Tuesday, October 16, 2007 - 1:05pm [Dine in]

We come here often and enjoy it. We live in the neighbourhood, so it is convenient and has decent food for the family. I like the Indian food and my husband and toddler enjoy the salmon dinner. The mango pudding is VERY good and my daughter shovels it in!
Sometimes service can be slow as it is a small, family-run restaurant but generally it isn't too bad. They do take out so that can slow things down a bit, but when you do get take out, it is fast.

Empty on a Friday night?
Submitted Tuesday, October 16, 2007 - 12:57pm [Dine in]

We went there awhile ago but I feel I need to warn others---do NOT go here! We had an entertainment coupon so thought we would try it out but we were totally disappointed. The food was expensive (even with a coupon), portions small and service mediocre to say the least. We went on a Friday night and were the only ones in the restaurant for some time and then some others straggled in.
I have NO CLUE how this restaurant wins best Indian in the Richmond newspapers. Is it because it is the ONLY "INDIAN" restaurant in Richmond? Yikes, someone open another Indian resturant and give this place a run for its money!
Well, if you have a craving for Indian and can't head into Vancouver for some good eats then head to Pisces Fish & Chips at Terra Nova- there they have some decent Indian curries without going over a bridge.
