Sorely disappointed
Submitted Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:46pm [Dine in]

I didn't want to like Feenies, I wanted to love it. I am a big fan of Lumiere - having had nothing but fantastic experiences there - and I wanted to take some visiting friends to Rob Feenie's casual place to show them that truly oustanding comfort food could be had at a reasonable price.

I wish I'd checked it out prior to bringing along any out of town guests.

And it wasn't that the food was so bad, it just wasn't great. Certainly not Iron Chef great anyway. We agreed:

1. The burgers were all pretty good, but after waiting 50 minutes to get them, we expected more than 'good'.
2. The poutine was downright shameful.
3. Service seemed a bit pretentious: Thirty minutes in, when we politely asked how our food was coming along, our server snootily said, "It shouldn't be much longer. We're busy. You're lucky you even got a table."
4. The desserts were truly delicious and almost made up for the disappointing night. Almost.

I wish I could say I'll try Feenie's again, but it's likely I won't. Frankly, I was left feeling nothing but embarrassed that I'd taken my friends out for such a mediocre meal at a much hyped restaurant.

The Strongbow Awaits
Submitted Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:03pm [Dine in]

Okay, I must admit I went here because I was in the neighbourhood and had heard they had Strongbow on tap. Silly reason maybe, but since I left England...well, I really have been missing the stuff. Prior to going, I didn't know much about the place, but aside from the ICY COLD, DELICIOUS Strongbow (ahhhh), my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Nice looking, inviting room - loved the stone walls and timber everywhere, but - HA - I guess that's the limey in me... And although we hadn't planned on eating, the women at the next table INSISTED we try the 'Duck Duo' and they were spot on; it was so good, we ended up getting another one after we'd devoured the first! We also tried the Ahi tuna (perfectly cooked and oh, so delicious. We both agreed, we LOVED the wasabi thing going on there...). The beef tacos (which were my handsdown favourite) most definitely were, to quote my dear companion, "Super snacky!".

Our servers (so many people running food!) were all genuinely friendly and although the place was hopping, we never lacked for anything.

We'll DEFINITELY be back!

Canard Delightful!
Submitted Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 10:39pm [Dine in]

Recently dined here. Always busy. Sometimes it's a tad too busy, but hey, it's a local shop for local people. Very good fare. On this last visit, my date tried the Huevos (piping hot, AWESOME veggie chilli, and "downright DELICIOUS!"). Yup, he loved it, and DAMN, he is so fussy. I had the, hmmm... Je Suis uh, something something Canard and it is not only my new "I'll have the usual" when I'm at SJ's, but it's now my handsdown favourite breakfast (scrambled eggs, goat feta, avocado, and salsa verde on a english muffin.) Uh, can you say H E A V E N????

Kid friendly, bloody fantastic milkshakes, and a funny menu too.

Kudos folks!

My friends and I were excited to hit Diner having heard a huge buzz about the place. While the food was pretty good - in a comfort food kind of way - I was completely crushed when my milkshake arrived. Hey, I know this sounds like HIGH DRAMA, but I had heard SO much about their 'amazing milkshakes'. God knows, I love my milkshakes...

Firstly, the milkshake I ordered arrived well INTO my entree course (and we'd all shared a plate of perogies as an appy), and we all agreed, it pretty much looked, and tasted, like someone had put some WARM chocolate milk in a blender and blasted it around for a couple of minutes trying to fluff it up and DISGUISE it as a milkshake. Yeah, okay. Well, frankly, I have NEVER tasted anything so bad. And WHY even serve it! Just tell us, "Uh, sorry, we're out of ice cream. All we have left back there is some 2% milk and an old bottle of Brown Cow syrup..." When I told the waitress how bad it had been, she SHRUGGED. ER, what? Yup, and on our bill and everything. We didn't stick around for their 'acclaimed' desserts.

Okay, and why do they still not have Visa OR Mastercard OR Am Ex OR debit? The story about them not having gotten the correct 'phone line' is gettin' a little thin considering they opened months and months and months ago...
