Cheesy yummyness

Food: I had the grilled cheese and chicken corn chowder. Both sound mild and a bit blah but my god they were delicious. The chicken corn chowder could have be a bit chunkier but the spicy, smoky flavour distracted me from any complaints I could think of. The grilled cheese was big and the perfect blend of aged, smoky and crispy flavours. I am not a fan of bread pudding but gave the banana bread pudding a go and though not my favorite ... pretty darn tasty!

Service: Slow and a bit distracted. I was at a table with good people and fun conversation so I was lucky but even still she was damn slow.

Value: A tad expensive but not excessive.

Ambiance: Everytime we got up to allow someone to go to the bathroom the table and or bench slid and bumped the people beside or behind us... not a great position to be in. The room was a tad dark but the music was just loud enough and the restaurant was the right temperature so all in all I would say 4 but had the table not been topsy turvy and I not required a flashlight to read the menu it would have been a 5.

I had the plain schnitzel and it was tasty with a bit of fresh lemon juice. the potatoes were greasy but good and well i hate cabbage so I can't really say anything on that. The strudel however was pathetic. The apples tasted canned, the dessert was cold but had recently been microwaved (yum) and the dough was chewy!!

We were in a large group and asked nor expected anything other than a 'how is everything going' after we ordered (not given) We also perhaps wanted the cheque sooner than 30 mins after eating... She must have had an off night because she was REALLY cranky especially when asked for the bill.

Meh, average.

The chairs were rickety.
The bathrooms were nasty.
The waitress was cranky.
The water tasted like chlorine?!
The candles were empty.
The door would stick and let in a draft

All in all I would go back but only if someone was in a desperate schnitzle mood.

I went to Vera's thinking it would be a nice yummy treat. I read on the website they had won all these awards and thought I might have found a gem. Hmm, well in theory it could have been.

FOOD: The burger was tasty and so stuffed with goodies I couldn't fit it in my mouth. I had to remove some of the tomatoes etc just to get a bit of burger that was bun to bun. I got paranoid though because the burger was a bit too pink. The onion rings were greasy disgusting things and the batter tasted 'off'. The fries were alright but not special. The sizes were massive so if you go just get one burger made a meal.

SERVICE: I do not blame the nice kid at the counter but instead the trainer who obviously didn't do his job by training the poor guy. I ordered
- a vera burger with the works minus the hot sauce and peppers
- and made that a meal with onion rings in place of fries (you have a choice! YUM)
I also ordered
- a pawer burger combo for my friend and made his a meal also.
The poor kid got confused by this so I repeated it again. After the fourth go round he read it back to me and he seemed tohave it all right except I wanted both burgers made into a meal and no extra basket of fries. The bill ended up 27 bux and I asked for the receipt to check why. He ended up making both burgers a meal, both with onion rings in place of fries and adding an extra basket of fries. We went back over the order and he refunded us the 4 bucks for the fries. Our burgers came out and our baskets of grease to follow. They then came by with an extra basket of fries of which I sent back because we didn't pay for it.

VALUE: Not bad if you just order a burger and make one person's a meal (huge baskets of food)

AMBIANCE: Crowded and the tables were dirty.

Tasty mains but poor sides

I went to this restaurant twice and found it 50/50 for food. The main dishes are tasty but the rice and beans on the side are tasteless and poor. The margaritas are yummy and fresh and the salsa is delicious. I never had a problem with service but then I speak up and don't like a hovering waitress. The price is a bit steep for the quality of the food though if the side dishes matches the main dish I wouldn't complain.

Another one bites the dust

Since they upgraded this place has gone down the tubes. Again I moved back to town only to find all the places I loved have 'expanded' and gone to shit.

FOOD: Obviously a different chef. Tastes like they use frozen vegetable medley in place of chopped veggies in alot of their menu items (I know the old chef used to chop/could see him through the door when the waitresses went in and out of the kitchen)

SERVICE: Still great

VALUE: Meh. Average price for below average grub

AMBIANCE: What do you want it is a small hole in the wall in the Ridges ghetto.

Not impressed and will probably stick with Ocean Village

Not a huge meat eater but DAMN!

First off my aunt dragged me to this restaurant against my will and I thank her!

FOOD: I am not a huge meat eater and was a bit put off at the lack of any vegetarian items on the menu but after reading the descriptions I was drooling. The food was in limited suppy as a couple of the menu items were sold out. I had wanted to try the roast chicken breast but it was sold out (next time) instead I settled on the gruyere tart to start and the ground porc shoulder with mild peppers and homeade linguini noodles. The noodles were melt in your mouth tender. The sauce was spicy and meaty. There were a few hard chunks of fat in the meat but I gladly picked around it while I dug around for the delicious pasta.
SERVICE: There was one waitress and she was amazing. I had barely put my water glass down empty when she was right next to me filling it up.
VALUE: Initially I thought 'wow expensive' but after I tasted the food it was definately priced accurately though higher than most in PITT/RIDGE area.
AMBIANCE: Clean, modern and stylish. A bit difficult to talk because I hesitated to have serious descussions with people so close to me and sound travelled so easily.

A nice little restaurant with an amazing staff. Tip well!

I used to love GM restaurant. I tried a different dish everytime and discovered that perhaps being a vegetarian (which I was considering but am not) was more than beans and tofu. The owner seemed so incredibly nice and the food was spiced nicely and the meal was cheap.... then they 'upgraded'. I moved away and came back to find the yummy cheap food was no longer.

FOOD: The spice seemed to leave the menu and everything was mild to tasteless. The last two times I went the food was cold and the 'medium' spice was non existant. I even tried to up it to 'super hot' the Aloo Muttar was like yogurt with food colouring and some curry perfume.

DECOR:The decor was and still is tacky and looked like a 70's Indian garage sale with a garden fountain in the midst. They seemed to make an effort to fulfill every stereotype that Indians are saddled with.Empty all the times I went or else completely packed and noisy as hell with no sound barriers or absorption (except the FOUNTAIN)

VALUE: Previously you could get a nice sized 'dish' with rice and roti for under 12 bucks now you pay for everything separately and rarely get out under 20 bucks a person. Don't bother ordering water just bring your own the service is that damn slow (see below)

SERVICE: It is like they pride themselves in beating down their employees until they are broken ghosts of humanity that only come to work to pay for whatever bill is pressing. The owners wife gives you amurky greeting then when she wakes from her nap she may come and take your order or you can wait for the teenager that comes for the next shift. I used to see this awesome tiny philipino girl and she was amazing then when I moved back I see these lifeless kids that obviously hate their jobs and exit through the revolving door that GM has for its wait staff. All the old staff that were there for years are gone and the new staff is lacking of course no worries they quit within months anyway. I think it is fairly telling when you see employees constantly quit a job, the food went downhill so I am assuming the chef left too.
All in all I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone anymore and will not go back myself. Sad but the once great 'gem' of a restaurant has turned into a food court buffet with crap service.

Warm sushi

I picked up sushi for lunch one day and found the girl who served me at the till polite but while I waited for the chef I was surprised at how miserable he was. The woman asked him to come out from the back and he came out mumbling under his breath and started slamming the ingredients around. I also noticed that the few times I have gone back it was closed for repairs (about a month apart). I don't think I would go back but the price was pretty decent though my sushi was warm which was creepy. I bought avacado rolls so that may be the reason it was warm...still....
