Granted, I haven't been here in at least a year. But this used to be one of my regular haunts, partly because it was close to where I lived at the time, but mostly because I really enjoyed the food, I always recognized faces, and everyone was friendly. The service was usually quite good - occasionally lacking but the servers were always nice, which makes up for a lot. I really enjoyed the mousaka and the lamb, and we used to love hanging out here for the music and late night drinks. They always let us stay to finish up that last drink, as opposed to the places that throw the lights on the second they do last call. Again, people were friendly, and an all-over good vibe.

I have eaten here on numerous occasions. My workplace happens to be very close to this restaurant, so we used to use it for both client lunches and staff lunches fairly regularly. For the most part, the food has generally been very good. Unfortunately, the service is random - occasionally it is acceptable, rarely good, and usually horrible. Sometimes everything was good and we could eat in a timely matter. Usually it takes far too long to get our meals, and the service is very lacking - no refills, no quality checks, etc. The last time I ate there (I haven't gone there since because of this) we had the worst service ever. As a former server, I tend to be fairly forgiving, and I understand when a place is understaffed or overly busy. This time, there was a total of three tables in the place, and our server, the "server trainer" at the time (I'm hoping but doubting things have changed), neglected to check on us at any point, never refilled our empty glasses, and didn't bring us the bill. We tried to catch his eye, finally resorting to the oh-so-rude tactic of waving, and then had to go to the bar and wait to get our check printed out for us. He was perfectly friendly but completely oblivious, as many of the servers there seem to be. When it takes 1 1/2 hours to eat a lunch during a very quiet time, you have to wonder. We also took my senile grandmother there once and it was NOT pretty. There is no excuse for food (lunch, not dinner) taking over a half hour to arrive in a dead restaurant. Especially when you can see the food sitting up in the window getting cold, as other servers stand around gossiping. I have had to ask for my food as take-out twice so that I could get back to work on time. Clearly they lack decent management. Not surprisingly, we now use the somewhat less-classy nearby ABC restaurant for our lunches, because at least the service is reliable.

You get what you pay for

This restaurant caters to many people including families with kids, people who enjoy a meal out but aren't in the position to spend a fortune. If you're looking for a genuine italian meal, of COURSE you're not going to find it here - why would you expect to? If you're being cheap, you're probably not going to find gourmet.

That said, it's a great place to go for a casual meal, to take your kids to without getting the evil eye, to enjoy a night out without spending a fortune. FYI, this restaurant is across from the movie theatres, so if you're expecting to rush in on a friday/saturday night 30 minutes before your movie starts....well, you're not the only one, and no one can perform miracles.

Personally, I've always enjoyed the food here, and any problems I've ever experienced with the servers have been quickly (and overly) rectified by the managers - just ask to speak to them, and you won't be disappointed. No, not all the servers are great, but this is a minimum wage industry during an extreme all-around labour shortage, so no surprises there.

Again, you get what you pay for. If you're looking for 5-star dining, go downtown and pay for it. If you're looking for an enjoyable meal at affordable prices, you've found it.

Not a Surprise

I used to work at another BP's, and Ackroyd was well-known as a joke. It's the "head office" one. We've never had good service the few times that we've bothered going here, have even had to go find a server on two occasions (I've gone 3-4 times). If you heard the rumors/stories the staff tell about this place, it's no wonder.
