Aphrodite's Organic Delights Cafe3598 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
Intense comfort food.

I've been buying the incredible pies at this place for a few years, but had neglected to try the food in the cafe side (the place is a bakery and restaurant side-by-side) until recently. Now I am kicking myself. The food here is amazing, some of the most satisfying and intense flavours I've ever come across in Vancouver. I came for dinner and ordered a salmon special. The fish was done perfectly, not even slightly overcooked. And the organic vegetables that came with it - mind-numbingly delicious. I also had a great salad to start, included (with pie!) in the price of the entree. Beautiful greens, meaty roma tomatoes and surprisingly sweet grated carrots, beets and turnips (which I used to think I hated). My partner had a yummy vegetarian pad thai as well.

I thought the service was positively lovely. Not pretentious, very welcoming and actually pretty fast considering the place was packed. We got in and out in just over an hour with bread, 3 courses and coffee. My only complaint was that the portions were almost too big. I barely had room for pie...mind you, I ate every bite. Oh...disappointing there's no booze on the menu. Wine or beer would have been nice.

Fun ambiance. It has a small town country feel which is very comforting. I'll be back for sure.

I took my mother here for her birthday hoping it would be a classy yet fun experience. Unfortunately the staff were so incredibly stiff and obviously scripted. Upon arrival we were asked "Can I get you some ice water while you're settling in?" The waiter then used the exact same line - verbatim - with the table next to us. He also asked us twice (and also the other table), "How are we enjoying the flavours?" Pre-TENSIOUS!

We each chose a 3 course meal, which sounded like a fair amount of food, but the portions were bordering on skimpy, especially the salads, which were also lack-luster. Good, just not terribly satisfying. It also took forever between courses, even though there were only 5 or 6 tables occupied the entire evening. I had to ask twice for an Americano - once while ordering dessert (as in, I wanted them together, is that so wrong?) and then again after slowly picking away at my custard until it was almost gone.

I'm not saying the evening was a disaster, but it was pretty boring, and a bit underwhelming for the price.
