Very Tasty Indian Food!
Submitted Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 11:50pm [Dine in]

I've only been to Indian Star a few times. I always try for the buffet, but manage to miss it.

The food is very good. At some Indian restaurants, the food is somewhat boring, without any real distinctive flavours, except maybe just a general hotness to compensate for a lack of ability to prepare tasty food. Not so with Indian Star. Everything I've had at this restaurant has been very nice, with good flavour.

I just wish they would have an evening buffet. If they had that, I'd give it an overall 4 rating, instead of a 3. But it's a good place to go for lunch, if you have time, and are in the area when the buffet is on, which I usually am not.

The best 잠뽕 around!
Submitted Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 11:41pm [Dine in]

I frequently go to Cheon Ji for my jambbong fix. There are a lot of places in the Vancouver area that serve jambbong, but I think that Cheon Ji makes some of the best that I have had around town.

Hwang Kum Dan (황금단) makes some of the best traditional Korean dishes that I've had this side of the Pacific. You'll find several items on the menu that are not available at most other Korean restaurants.

Also of note is the fact that the owner makes her own brand of kimchi, which is for sale. This isn't your typical 공장 김치 (the kind you see in most Korean stores). No, it's much more like the kind 'mom used to make'. You get about 12 - 13 lbs for about $35, which isn't a bad deal, if you eat a lot of kimchi. She also has a large selection of kimchis to choose from, if you know what you're looking for.

The atmosphere is only so-so, with a couple of large TVs playing all the time, which I find very distracting.

The food is awesome, the service is about average, and the atmosphere is not exactly 'intimate'. But it's a good place to get very good Korean food.

And the jambbong broth really is outstanding; it isn't watery and bland, like at a lot of Korean restaurants. I haven't had enough other menu items to really comment, but the few I've had have been among the best I've had in Canada.

And it really is 'mom's home cooking', from what I've learned. I've had a few conversations with the owner, and when I asked her where she learned to cook such good food, she told me that she just learned from her mother, and that she wants to make the best Korean food that she is capable of. She takes a great deal of pride in serving the best, and that really does show in what you get on your table.

Decent Eats at Mehfil
Submitted Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 11:22pm [Dine in]

After reading the reviews on this restaurant, my wife and I decided to head over to the Mirch Masala restaurant, across the street. When I got there, I looked over and saw Mehfil, and by that time had forgotten the reviews that I had read here. But I saw the 'Buffet' sign, which was what I was looking for, so over to Mehfil we went.

Well, I have to say that most of the reviews here are pretty much about where I also sit. I didn't find anything outstanding about Mehfil, but I think we'll probably go back some time. The buffet selection is very limited, but the food was okay.

Unlike a previous reviewer's comment, my wife and I were at one of only two tables that had goras sitting at them. Everyone else there appeared to be of Indian descent; and the food wasn't really 'westernized' at all. But to repeat, there is far better Indian fare to be had, and I am looking forward to following through with Mirch Masala some time soon.

Yes, we will go back. My wife would actually rate this restaurant much higher than I did; she thinks the food there is 'excellent', but I have to disagree with her on that point.

The service was not outstanding, but our waitress was friendly.

Keep in mind that it is a buffet, so the service is pretty typical for what it is.

Cheap, fairly good, and it fills the hole. But it isn't fine dining.

Worth a visit, if you're hungry, in a hurry, and not too fussy.
