Love, love, love

My husband and I have been dining at the Hourglass for the past two years. It is our favorite place to go for a nice evening out. Yes, the interior is a little dated but that is what I find charming about it. The staff is always pleasant and more than helpful. Several times that we have been there the owner has come around to ask everyone how their meals are which I always love to see.

Our favorite thing to order is the Neptune Schnitzel. I've loved schnitzel for years and was always searching for the best schnitzel place in town. I had a couple favorites but the moment we came across this place I knew the search was over. The meat is so thin and the batter is the right amount of crisp. It just melts in your mouth. The sauce has perfect flavor and they aren't stingy with the crab and shrimp. I always love the potatoes served with schnitzel too... they usually sit right next to the red cabbage and soak up just a little hint of the flavor. And I hate red cabbage but something about this is all kinds of right in my books.

I cannot praise this place enough. We have never had a negative experience and whenever we bring friends and family there they fall in love! I do think a few renovations to update the place wouldn't hurt... it would draw in a much larger crowd but I kind of hope they don't because I'm selfish and I love the laid back, quiet atmosphere. It's great for sharing some special time with your loved one.

Good morning!

My husband and I were picking up our take out from the Japanese restaurant just a few stores down when we noticed the delightful little cafe. We had some time to kill before our food was ready so I suggested I go pick us up a few drinks and check the place out. I was interested to see the artwork they had up because I know several smaller cafes sell local artists' work. (I didn't find out if this was the case as I didn't see any information posted.) The interior is charming; the mock candle-filled fireplace is a great touch! The chairs were lacking in style and comfort but as they grow I'm sure so will their budget for new chairs. All and all, it worked!

I was greeted immediately with a warm welcome. I went to look at their sign to see what they offered and found it was somewhat hidden towards the back of the store. You would think this information would be near the till but it wasn't. I'm sure it is not a big deal but I didn't have my glasses on so I looked like a fool walking to the back of the store and squinting a whole bunch. But, that's my problem haha! I decided on two italian sodas and when I was waiting for the lady to ring me through I noticed these fancy looking cinnamon rolls. I figured we could use a little dessert after our take out and grabbed two of those as well. The lady asked if I had been in before and I told her I hadn't. She explained that all of their food was homemade in the back including their sandwich meats. No processed meat for them! She pointed out their board for daily specials and I noticed belgian waffles on it. Instantly I knew it didn't matter how the soda or cinnamon rolls were... we would be back for breakfast!

The cinnamon rolls were AMAZING! They were really dense so if you are expecting a "Cinnabon" style roll, eh eh... these aren't for you. They're more of a scone but oh my gosh, coffee, tea, milk... whatever. This is the perfect compliment! They reminded me of the ones my mom used to make and are perfect for cold autumn days! Italian sodas are italian sodas so I can't preach about that... they didn't offer whipped cream which I don't like anyways but I still appreciate the offer because I know typically they come with.

Alright, long story short. Woops, too late. My husband and I went back the following weekend for breakfast and it was everything I was hoping for and more. I stopped ordering waffles at restaurants because I find they get soggy inside and the outside is never crisp. I thought I would give it a whirl at Limelight because of how delicious their cinnamon rolls were. Boy was I right! They got everything perfect! PERFECT! The waffle came with sliced strawberries and whipped cream which I had on the side. The strawberries were to die for! My husband had the french toast with strawberries and was equally impressed. To go along with our breakfast we ordered a hot chocolate for me and a mocha for him. I loved the different sized white mugs they had and the elongated teaspoons. It was probably the best hot chocolate I have ever had. It was like they heated chocolate milk... I can't even begin to explain it but it was smooth and just the right amount of sweet! The gentleman serving us was perfectly friendly and the wait for our food wasn't terrible at all. It's nice to know the food comes to us right away too, instead of sitting under a heat lamp.

This was the best breakfast I have had out in a very long time and I want to go every weekend now! :)

Next, I would love to see what their burgers and poutine are like... they haven't done a bad job yet so I'm sure they're going to be deeelightful!
