My favourite Shanghainese spot
Submitted Sunday, November 29, 2009 - 7:32pm [Dine in]

I absolutely love this place! Of course, they have the odd dish here and there that may be found better someplace else, however, I find the motherly nature of the owner just a treat. This restaurant hand makes the best xiao long bao (Shanghainese steamed dumplings) this city has to offer, in my humble opinion.

Another favourite is the "gao choi hup" - chive box, roughly translated?

The atmosphere of the restaurant (ie, decoration, quality of furniture, etc) is rough but please do not let this sway you from visiting this wonderful restaurant.

Honestly one of the worst dining experiences ever
Submitted Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 6:04pm [Dine in]

Just like many of the reviews here, we decided to try Timbre Restaurant for DOV. We were impressed by the menu and the price ($15).

I called ahead of time to ask if this was a child-friendly restaurant since we would have one baby and one toddler with us. I was told yes.

When we arrived, there were no high chairs available, so we had to juggle the children on our laps, but that's not the part that made us balk at this experience. The fact that our three course meal took over 2 hours was the beginning. We all ordered the appetizer soup, which all came cold and the waiter took away my boyfriend's soup before it was finished (and yes, he didn't ask before wisking the soup away). Next, our main courses. My sister had the wild mushroom ravioli which was fine, except for the fact that there were literally 4 pieces of regular sized ravioli on the lonely looking plate. For that amount, I would have served the ravioli on a tea saucer so at least the portion looked larger.

I had the steak, which was good, but was a teeny tiny wee lit' piece.

Finally, all of our desserts (cheesecake) was again in the teeny tiny wee fashion and FROZEN. I couldn't even put my fork in it! It was amazing.

Several times we asked the waiters to bring our food quicker but we were simply ignored. We would have been normally just enjoyed the long dinner but the problem was the children. Any parent would know that it is difficult to entertain babies and toddlers for two hours sitting in the same spot.

Needless to say, never ever EVER again.

Nothing special
Submitted Friday, September 30, 2005 - 10:59am [Dine in]

I liked Fiction for its decor, it has a very trendy lounge-cool feel to it which was fun. I didn't think that their food was all that impressive, and they charged "We think our food is impressive" prices. Quantities were ridiculously small, eventhough I fully understand the concept of tapas & "amuse bouches". I found the tastes to be, of course, alright, but not phenomenal. I would skip Fiction and go to Pacific Crab Co. on Denman St for their tapa-like dishes.
