Don't judge a book by it's cover.

I went for a friends' birthday. There was aroud 15 of us. When I first walked through the door I thought my friend lost a bet and was forced to book this place.
I kind of held on to this feeling until my drink came. I ordered a home made honey mead, a traditional drink in ole Ethiopia. ( No sugar you see, only honey). Deeeeeelicious!!! This place just got better.
When the food came...Holy Toledo...what a feast!!! I've never had anything like it! The soured dough crepe...it was strange at first, but let me tell you, it really grows on you!!
All the food was outstanding. I was really impressed. The thing that really amazed me though was the kitchen. I've worked as a cook for almost 20 years and to see that kitchen and what came out of it was really amazing. It wasn't dirty or anything like that, it's just that it was so very not "state of the art". It really made me understand that these people were making HOME MADE FOOD.
Never mind the look of the place. It isn't fancy schmancy with all sorts of bells and whistles. The servers aren't gonna schmooz, but they will be genuinely happy to have you as their guest. A real diamond in the rough.
A real diamond in the rough!!!

Kam's Place1043 Davie Street, Vancouver
What's with all the Kam bashing?
Submitted Monday, September 17, 2007 - 6:38pm [Dine in]

I have been to Kam's countless times and I will be back countless times more. I think the food is really delicious and the price and portions...well the portions are HUGE!!! The price is more than reasonable, especially with the 2 for 1 coupon that is in the Georgia Straight evey week.
As for the service...well is just that. Service. I'm not gonna make up any thing about it. You place your order, they bring your food. No French service, no la-tee-da. It is however, solid.
As for Kam himself...what a gentleman. I went for dinner with a very visibly pregnant friend of mine and he went so far as to say a blessing for the unborn child.(He is healthy and happy, thanks Kam).
Easily the best Asian food on Davie street!

Not so bad really.

I went to Shanghai 1949 in the hopes of a good Chinese restaurant. I have to say that it wasn't the best I've had but it also was far from the worst I've had.
The menu didn't have a very good selection. I was told that the menu was still being worked on, but the food was pretty good. I actually enjoyed tofu (really enjoyed tofu ) for the first time in my life .
I understand that a restaurant goes though growing pains when it first opens so I'll give this place a few more tries. They have the right idea but they aren't quite there yet. I think they'll do just fine.

Tojo's Restaurant1133 W Broadway, Vancouver
Tojo ruined all sushi for me.
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 10:46pm [Dine in]

I went to Tojo's with my fiancee for an expected fabulous dinner. We were not let down.
The seafood was the freshest I've ever had other than getting fish straight from the boat. We went for the Omakase at the bar and let Master Chef Tojo take control of the experience. What a great time. Everything was absolute top quality.
The service was...very attentive. Almost too much though. That really is the worst of the whole experience. Not much to complain about I guess.
Although the meal was pricey, $350.00 for two, which did include saki and a very decent tip, I would do it again. You get what you pay for.
Any other sushi does not compare.
Domo arigato Tojo-san!!!
