Not a Bad Star, Can be Better!
Submitted Tuesday, June 7, 2011 - 12:14am [Dine in]

I went there with a friend on a Sunday for lunch after we saw other friends mentioned that they visited this place. We had high hopes after browsing the restaurant's menu on their website, thinking that we might get a bit of little Italy out of this visit.

Unfortunately we were definitely underwhelmed. They were not horrible but not even close to what it is racked up to be. We found couple of their food items too salty and too greasy.

The decor is not too bad but we felt that the waiter didn't give us enough time to look over the menu before coming back again to get our order. We had to send her away twice before we were ready to order. Just to set the context, the restaurant was not busy at all so they were not in a rush to get people out so to free up tables for other guests.

Overall, I think the restaurant has potential with its concept, but execution (food and service) needs quite a bit of work.

Shanghai Chinese Bistro1124 Alberni Street, Vancouver
Love the Food, Awesome Service!

Shanghai Chinese Bistro (SCB) is definitely my favorite dim sum place in town. However, if you are looking for a cheap dim sum place just to grab a bite, them this is not your joint, there are way more places that would serve much cheaper dim sum than SCB.

My husband introduced me to this restaurant 5 years ago when we first met and I have been hooked ever since. He's been a 10 year customer with them.

Their food is top-notch, great quality and very authentic. Don't write them off just because they are in downtown Vancouver, but they sure beat many dim sum places in Richmond and other areas. A lot of the other places focuses on giving huge portions but neglect the overall quality, but SCB's portions are very reasonable and the quality is definitely there. I highly recommend their hot and sour soup and mango pudding, very very yummy.

Then, their service is phenomenal. They are cordial, speaks fluent English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, and are always filling our water glass or tea cups. Super attentive. Unlike some other Chinese restaurants, it really is nice not to be afraid that you may be yelled at if you ask for something, or feel that you may be troubling the waiter as with some of the other places, the waiters always look as if they are super busy. What makes them more special is that they really do remember their customers. For example, one time my husband and I told them that we are going on a vacation, the next time we went to the restaurant again, which was at least a month later, the waiter asked us how our vacation went.

The restaurant decor is clean and tidy. Nothing fancy but no complaints for sure.

When my husband and I want some comfort food, or after a few weeks of traveling, we very often visit SCB for some good old dim sum to welcomes ourselves back home.

Love this place, love their food, and love their people!

Awesome Food, Superb Service!

This place, is by far THE best Indian restaurant I've visited. I've visited many other and their food is just not even close to the tastiness of The Bombay. My husband and I love spicy food so we know to order our food "Indian hot" and if you love spicy food, you won't be disappointed.

This place is simple and clean, no fancy decor. If you are looking for wholesome Indian food without having to go through a pretentious experience, this is the place. Service is excellent, all the waiters/servers are super friendly and attentive.

If you want a good spicy dish, try their chicken korma, Indian hot. This is my all time favorite. It's true that you will need to pay extra for naan and rice, but since my price comparison is dining in downtown Vancouver, I still find their food very reasonably priced for the quality and how delicious is.

HIGHLY recommended!

OK Food, Ridiculous Delivery Service!!!
Submitted Tuesday, June 7, 2011 - 12:09am [Delivery]

f you want a long story short, this place has got OK Indian food but it has the worst delivery service, if you can call it that at all.

So here goes the long story. Like many others, I have tried their butter chicken and would agree that they are one of the better places. They certainly use enough spices in their sauce to kick up the flavour scale and you can ask for extra spicy if you are up for it, and they do a fairly decent job at making the dish as hot as possible. If rated on food alone, I would give them a 3 out of 5 stars.

However, they get only 1 star from me for their RIDICULOUS delivery service, if you can call that service at all. So, I live in downtown Vancouver and get that it's hard to find parking, but honestly, any person would agree that delivery means food to your door. The delivery guy from Tandoori Palace REFUSED to park his vehicle around our apartment building and made my husband go downstairs to get our food. He was impolite and insisted on not coming upstairs as he didn't want to find parking around our neighbourhood and was afraid of getting a ticket if he parked illegally. My husband didn't want to argue any further as we were in the midst of watching the Stanley Cup Final but to say the least, he was not pleased. Seriously, when did a delivery guy's parking issue become my problem?!?! I am pretty sure we ordered delivery for a reason.

We were so unhappy with them that we that our last time ordering from them would be the very very last. Simply outrageous.
