Never been disappointed
Submitted Saturday, January 30, 2010 - 12:46pm [Dine in]

In the past 12 months we have gone twice for two of our daughters teenage birthday dinners. Each time the service has been consistent, the food has been consistent and we leave with full stomachs.
It's a great hip Kitsilano restaurant with an extensive menu (give yourself time to read through it) and a very cool atmosphere that doesn't disappoint us.

Cibo = 'C' grade

We had our annual New Years dinner at this highly rated restaurant after researching dozens of restaurants.
Unfortunately, we found it mediocre.
Our server was very presumptuous. Often telling us the amount of food some of us were ordering was too small, so of course we ordered more - we ended up having more food than we needed. Drinks were not offered to half our party. Some of the guests were neglected when asked how their food was.

The Carpaccio - was apparently done Italian style. Tough, thick and barely seared - not our experience when we travelled in Italy. Some of us enjoyed the pasta, the fish was tender, chicken was good, but none of the food was outstanding. No beef was available off the main menu.
For New Years (early seating) it was very quiet in there, no festive ambience.

Overall all the food was just 'ok'.

Unfortunately, we won't be going back.

Consistently Great Meals and Good Service

We have been to Tapenade around a dozen times - and have never had a poor meal or bad service.
The pasta's are always cooked a la dente, the sauces are not too heavy.
Meats are always cooked to perfection.
Great martinis (recommend the Pus__ Galore).
We also enjoy the atmosphere, it's airy, open and has outdoor seating with some green space in front.
We have gone in jeans and more dressy wear and have felt comfortable either way. We've brought our teenage daughters and they were catered to quite nicely.

Chop10251 St Edwards Dr, Richmond
Gotham's and Morton's have nothing to worry about

My parents took my wife and I to Chop in Richmond for our anniversary. They had planned on going to Mandalay’s in Steveston but after reading poor reviews decided to try Chop. My folks also chose this restaurant because of a promotion on the web site (King Crab for +$3 with your meal). However, when they enquired about the promotion they were told that that promotion was an August promotion (it was now 2nd week in September) and was no longer available. My folks were disappointed so I politely asked the waiter if he could check with the manager to see if they could do anything. He came back and they extended the promotion for us. Not a great start to our evening.
Our waiter from the beginning did not seem experienced and had difficulty suggesting a bottle of red wine, which only got more frustrating from there. The waiter could not articulate with decisiveness which was the better cut of steak to order (rib-eye vs top sirloin) and seemed wishy washy about most other decisions. My parents shared a meal of Caesar salad and a rib-eye steak with homemade fries. I ordered a Caesar salad and sirloin and my wife ordered wedge salad and the petite prime rib. My folks informed the waiter that they were sharing the Caesar salad but had to request a second plate – no cold salad fork (that came with the other Caesar’s) was offered. The Caesar salad was nothing to write home about. Both the sirloin and the rib-eye had little to no taste.
When the manager happened to ask how our meal was, I told her it that the meat had no taste and that I had ordered Bernaise Sauce to dip the meat into. She said she would talk to the head chef, which she did and he told her that it's possible that some of the meats didn't get the proper seasonings on them but that she would like to offer us free desserts. Hmmm, I just paid $28 for a steak that I hadn't started to eat and she was already offering me dessert rather than a freshly seasoned replacement steak. My wife did enjoyed the prime rib meal.
One quarter of the French fries were burnt – we were told that’s the way it comes because the cuts are different sizes.

Wine was unevenly distributed. Plates were taken before the last person was finished eating. Water re-fills were lacking. Overall service was adequate, but one would expect more at these prices.

This is my second time being underwhelmed at this restaurant. I would have hoped that Richmond could have competed with the downtown steak restaurants (Morton's & Gotham's). Not a chance.

Go for the atmosphere, go for the washrooms, enjoy the lounge, enjoy the outdoor seating but dont' have high expectations for the food or service.

Don't go for the egg$ benedict$
Submitted Monday, September 7, 2009 - 11:04pm [Dine in]

My wife and I went for brunch and ordered eggs benedicts. Our meals took quite awhile to arrive >30 minutes and we were the first customers of the day. My wife's eggs benedict was fine (nothing outstanding) and my eggs were almost hard boiled. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she told me that they come out different ways. I told her that I would like them similar to my wife's (which were a bit more runny) and what I would consider typical of an eggs benedict (especially a $16 eggs benedict!). I took the potatoes off so I could eat with my wife and a few minutes later the benedict came back, incredibly runny (soupy) and on the same plate with the same english muffin and steak meat that was in the original. Service was slow, all in all I would not go back there, especially with those prices.
