Worst EVER. A long and painful meal.
Submitted Saturday, July 9, 2011 - 10:32am [Dine in]

Last night was my first time going to R.T.L, even tho the reviews were somewhat on the mixed side, I decided to give it a chance.

I have to say, this by far, was the worst meal I have ever had in Vancouver. Especially given the location within the heart of Yaletown, you would think there would be a decent standard, but boy am I ever wrong!

There were so much wrongs about this restaurant I don't even know where to begin!
It was a Friday night, place not even half full.
First of all, the waitress was somewhat friendly, not very attentive and had a confused and puzzled look on her face like she wasn't sure what she is doing there. The manager only greeted us, then never came to ask about the food and didn't even notice we left.

The food. Horrific. We ordered the following (there were about 30 min intervals for each dish, not sure what they were trying to achieve with all the tables looking like they were starving to death)

1) House salad, which seems to be just mixed greens you can get at Costco tossed with vinegar and some slimy soft leek, sprinkled with almonds. I make better salad than that!

2) Pork Belly, this was okay, but seems like something you can buy at Chinese BBQ joints. Nothing special there.

3) Chipotle Mussels, this was the WORST dish of the night. I love mussels and I order it at almost every restaurant I go. But I have never ever had mussels this bad, EVER. It was oily, extremely salty and the meat had shrunk to the size of a dime. Definitely not fresh, I wouldn't even eat this if someone paid me to. DO NOT ORDER THIS DISH!!!!

4) Crab and Prawn Fritters, this came about 40 min after the mussels, during that time we had nothing on our table. Having waited that long, I thought they were making it fresh for sure. But it was COLD! and burnt on the side down, which they probably thought no one would notice if they just place it facing down.

5) Potatoes with Duck fat, this is a side dish, and probably the best dish of the night given it was actually on the warm side.

We didn't even bother with dessert, the bill came to $90 plus tax for two people.
The only positive thing I have to say about this place is their decor, but so what? If the food aint good no one aint coming back.
I strongly advise going to this restaurant, it was a total disappointment and didn't help that the entire experience was dragged on and on with the meaningless waiting.

Glowing Happiness
Submitted Monday, September 13, 2010 - 3:59pm [Dine in]

I went to Steveston's Pizza on a Friday night, from far away all around was dark but the tiny pizzeria glowed with an orange warmth that stood out like a fireplace in the middle of a cold wet night.

The moment I walked in I knew I was in for a good food journey, the aroma was rich with baked bread, cheese, and the amazing mixture of fresh ingredients, sauce and herbs.

The service was quick and friendly, store front very clean and tidy.

The pizza, I dont even know how to begin describing the taste of it. I think if there were pizzas in heaven, that's how it would taste like. The ingredients harmonized and complimented each other in a way that your taste buds would explode with surprise, of how wonderful everything all came together and joined each other hand in hand on this happy little slice in your hand. It tasted so fresh and delicious that I felt like the world was a better place after devouring it. I took out the pizzas and enjoyed it with a bottle of red wine at home and it was simply the best meal I had in a long long time.

The price is a bit high, but I think it's worth every penny of it. Quality, quality, quality. For those who are curious, go give it a try, I promise you will find that glowing happiness that I did too.

Good Things In Life
Submitted Saturday, June 5, 2010 - 5:24pm [Dine in]

There is a type of food that you eat just to fill up and forget about it after, and then there's another type that explodes your mind and awakens your soul. Hanako is the latter. Without any condiments, the fish by itself is enough to take you for a dive in the ocean. You can appreciate deeply the gifts of earth as the food is simply prepared so fresh and sincere that it reminds you the of all the good things in life. I here thank Hanako for this experience and strongly recommend anyone who haven't been to this place to give it a try. The musts are: Crab Salad, Smoked Tuna Salad, Torched Toro Nigiri and Hamachi Sashimi. Simply AMAZING.

Had this place several times, excellent homemade soup and sandwhiches. The owner is very friendly, and he makes all the soup and bread from scratch! My favourite is the cream of mushroom soup, cant go back to campbell's after trying here. The sandwiches are fresh and tasty, nothing artificial about this place! The price is def reasonable too for the amount ($7 for a whole sandwhich and a big bowl of soup!) Perfect place to warm up to on a rainy day.

simply amazing

Me and my boyfriend came here cause we were shopping across the street, and it was such a delightful surprise!
The decor and the ambiance is classy, music is not too loud so we can actually have a conversation without yelling. The waitress was very attentive, we felt very comfortable and welcomed.
Now the food, this is by far the BEST and FRESHEST Japanese food I've had in Vancouver. We had the 5 kinds of sashimi and were blown away by the quality of it. The chef offered to deep fry the jumbo shrimp's head and IT WAS DELICIOUS! We also had the avocado and tofu salad, the roulette roll and the yam fries. All had really nice authentic Japanese flavour. There's also tons of different kinds of sake to choose from. The seasame ice cream that came with the cheescake dessert is simply amazing. The prices may be a bit high, but worth every penny. Definetly a great alternative from places like Guu, Ebisu or Happa. I highly recommand this place for all the IZAKAYA lovers =)
