I just came back from overseas and am only here in Van for a month. Last week I went to TOMOYA 2 nites in a row..making it a total of 3 visits this time back. I'd been missing their specialty rolls so much in Asia, and believe me VAN has the best sushi and fresh sashimi....Stephanie the owner was super nice; she recognized me and my twin sister and our other frnd so treated us to a fried banana dessert plate. Soo yummy (I only had it at teppanyaki restaurants before so its awesome they have it on their menu).

BLACKSUN roll is a must! its' not relaly a roll but diced up sashimi bits underneathe a bed of black caviar looking things with a tiny raw egg on top. TO DIE FOR! even my dad loved it when i brought him and he is a picky eater*

Their spicey shellfish appy was surprisingly very good too, and def worth the price.

This place is just awesome, I think i will go again before i leave town...u get free miso soup, big ass rolls, awesome flavor...i def recommend it.

NEW WEST has good sushi!

Despite the location which might throw people off into thinking it's another sushi trap...this place is one of the best Jap restaurants I've tried in the lower mainland (This and Minato on broadway and Sushi Town on Hastings burnaby are the 3 I think of when craving Jap food).

They have some orginial rolls you won't find elsewhere; a wide selection too. THey added some new rolls like someone else mentioned and I tried one of it with the unagi (forgot what it was called) and it was soo good we were fighting for the last piece.

Their rolls are all 8 good size pieces too which is a big portion considering the price. We always get the toro cheeks which they grill (a lil pricey) and you have to ask them if they have it for the day cuz i dont' think its on the menu. Rainbow Roll is a better tasting California Roll w/ salmon sashimi and shrimp on top. Their Sashimi is fresh, tempura crisply fried, and their Tofu Teppanyaki is always steaming hot w/ perfect tasting teriyaki sauce on top.

It's super close to my house so my family always goes here. My dad's a super picky eater yet he always wants to go to this place. It's a nice, clean environment and I'm just surprised that its not always packed. It's right across from New West skytrain station which is super convenient...chek it out guys!

I've probably been to a gazillion jap restaurants around the lower Mainland and Minato is definately the one that I go back to the most. This place is NOT overpriced considering the firm quality of food they deliver everytime. It's not your cheap AYCE joint or your inexperienced White sushi chef making thrown-together pieces of rice. If you want delicacy and quality then go to your Tojos (which is overrated) or ShiruBay/Guu (more authentic Japanese food) but if you want some good Americanized sushi then Minato is def a good choice.

I love their Mixed sunomono, Spicy Minato Roll(which has little pieces of fried batter on top), House Roll, and Assorted Tempura. Their salad looks good too but I'm the type that refuses to order a salad at a Jap joint.

Parking' snot hard to find, you get reimbursed if you park in their parking lot, if not you can sometimes find spots on the street or next door at the Rugby's parking lot.
