Took three hours to eat a meal...
Submitted Saturday, February 9, 2008 - 2:28am [Dine in]

I went to this restaurant on the second night of Chinese New Years (CNY) and had one of the worst eating experiences of my entire life. I'm Chinese and I've worked in a Chinese restaurant in my teen years and I know how bad some of the restaurants can be but this one totally takes it to a new low.

I had a really bad experience with the soup that came with the meal, there was something in there that broke apart and was gritty and tasted like sand. A couple other dishes that weren't good are the duck meat lettuce wraps, the meat was way too salty and the lettuce was not that fresh and the fried rice was very bland. Overall, the food was edible, some dishes like sweet and sour pork chops and the peking duck wrap were okay.

The service was really bad, I understand that it was busy and it was CNY but it should not take 1 hour for 2 dishes to come out, especially when you reserved a table and told them which menu you would like before arriving. The wait staff was inattentive, instead of switching our plates, they just plop the plates down on our table and walked away without taking the old plates. After two and a half hours, there was two dishes that still hasn't come out and when we asked about it, the waitress said that on her sheet, she has check it off so it came out already and basically accused us of lying. Finally another waitress came over and it was determined that they messed up.

Good food but I can't see what I'm eating

The eatery is totally not like any other japanese restaurant I've been to. The first time I went, I was a little dubious but my friend recommended the place and said that I had to try it so I did. This place is dimly lit, don't sit in the booths lit with only candle light. You won't be able to see anything. The food was good, some of the sushi rolls were creative.. it might take a few times to try all their rolls. The tuna tempura and tuna crunch roll comes highly recommended. The tuna tempura is a bit on the expensive side... but if you go with a big group and order platters, its not bad.

Where's the unagi?

I've been to this restaurant probably 5-6 times in the past year. It is okay for an AYCE place, but their food is not the freshest. Especially if you go for late night. I usually go around 7-8 for dinner and at 9:30 the late night menu starts, there was a couple times when we order a second round after late night has started and the tuna that comes is 1/2 frozen.... and they seem to always run out of unagi or just don't have it...

The food and service both aren't very consistent, some days are better than others.

If you want creative or fresh sushi/sashimi or unagi, this isn't the place to be...

If you do decide to eat here, try the raw oysters, tuna tataki and beef tataki.

Does not disappoint

After reading all the reviews here, I had very high expectations of this restaurant and was praying it didn't disappoint as I was in charge of planning a birthday dinner. I made reservations the night before, the person I spoke to was friendly and informative. We were a little late but they were very accomodating.

The food took a little long to prepare, but it was probably because we had a fairly large group and they had to serve all the dishes together... while waiting, we ate the bread which was just divine... it was like eating cake, light and fluffy, perfectly prepared...

For an appetizer, I had the butternut squash soup and that was very tasty. The linguine with mussels, clams, etc.. was just wonderful as it had the right amount of seafood and it was perfectly cooked, sauce was great, I'm not a fan of pasta but this place serves some of the best pasta I've ever had, and I tried some of the dishes other people had, the gnochi, risotto, they were all very yummy.

The wine menu was terrific, they had a great selection.

Last but not least, the dessert, I had the chocolate pear which was just heavenly, the tiramisu was pretty good and the chocolate salami was good as well, a little too chocolatey for my tastes...

The service was wonderful, our server was terrific as was the other servers. Everyone was so friendly... and they're skilled at taking pictures as well.

The ambience is good.

Will certainly be back for more of the great food, especially the yummy desserts.

This is one of my favorite chinese cafe type restaurants. The place is kind of shabby but don't be fooled by the looks. I come here very often for their CURRY noodles. They have the best yellow curry in Vancouver! I'm very picky with my curry, they have to be the right amount of spicyness and curry taste and so far I haven't found a better place to have curry than Nancy's. Their other dishes, wonton soup, beef brisket soup are all very good.

The only complain I have for Nancy's is the service, I've been going to this place for a few years now and their service has improved, but nothing to praise about.
