Alexis Greek Restaurant3420 Cambie Street, Vancouver
Decent Greek Food Close to Home
Submitted Friday, April 20, 2012 - 12:25pm [Take-out]

Last night was my third take out experience at Alexis' and I can say it is good Greek food that is hot and ready when they promise. For some inexcusable reason, good Moussaka is hard to find in this town, which in my books should be the standard test for any Greek restaurant. As someone who makes this dish at home, although somewhat labour intensive, it's easy to make it tasty. Alexis does a respectable job of not only Moussaka but also roast lamb and souvlaki dinners. The Greek salads are always fresh and perfectly dressed (not too oily), the meats are always very tender and not too salty (another feature of other Greek restaurants too much of the time). The waitress is charming and always a delight to deal with. For those who find decor important, this restaurant has been done up very tastefully in a cosy style that is comforting to be a part of for a quiet neighbourhood dinner. As for cleanliness, this location has been spotless each time I've been. Among Greek restaurants I would give Alexis 4 stars.

This restaurant did great, but only one time.

In November, during the Chinese dine out competition, four of us had the best Chinese dinner of our lives. I argued it may have been the best pre-set menu (6 dishes) experience I had ever had. Each dish was outstanding for freshness, taste, presentation and quality. We were so impressed with our experience at the Bamboo Grove we returned on Dec. 15 for my 50th birthday dinner. It was very apparent that the competition was long over however. Each dish was less than half as satisfying as it had been a month earlier. The overall cost was exorbitant for a Chinese restaurant, however it was my 50th birthday. I don't know what is worse: when you know a restaurant can serve fantastic food (but only if they are competing for a prize), or when it's expensive and not very good from the start. I would never make the trip to Richmond from Vancouver again for the Bamboo Grove. There are enough better restaurants in my neighbourhood.
