Sushiyama371 East Broadway, Vancouver
Over-rated Junk
Submitted Friday, June 27, 2008 - 12:47pm [Dine in]

I came here after hearing rave reviews from a few buddies... I tried this place 3 times and each time the quality was consistently mediocre.. The only items that I found to be average were the nigiri sushi.. other than that, all else is quite bland..

Servers come off quite unpleasant.. felt like we were given the cold shoulder each time.

Considering there are tonnes of japanese restaurants on the Main Street stretch and in the city, I'd definitely recommend another place.

Sushiyama is over-rated.

Tojo's Restaurant1133 W Broadway, Vancouver
Best Fine Dining Japanese
Submitted Friday, June 27, 2008 - 12:35pm [Dine in]

The first time I came to Tojo's I expected to foot a large bill, as my colleague comes here once a month and had given me the FYI. I ended up paying $220 before tax for 2 (no Sake). The food is incredible. A lot of flaming about the ridiculous pricing, and I agree, it's quite expensive... but Tojo's is a Japanese fine dining establishment - I think a lot of folk who dine at Tojo's for the 1st time expect to pay slightly more than at an AYCE restaurant, which is definitely NOT the case. That aside, we received great service - our waitress gave us a lot of attention and explained the origins of each dish cause she knew this was our first time.

The only negative experience came at the end of the night... we capped off a great meal by not finding my car where I parked it (in the parking lot in the back of the restaurant)... apparently someone from Tojo's called in to Drake's to tow it away.. there are no signs indicating no parking, and Tojo's even advertises that the back parking lot is for customer parking only... but apparently it's for 'frequent' customers (he has to recognize the cars). Sorta sucks, ended up forking out another $93 + cab fare to pick up the car from the Drake's yard... anyways, moral of the story is to not park in the back unless the man himself knows your car...

Back on topic: I'd recommend going to Tojo's for anniversaries or really special occasions - definitely not a 1st date place as this will set a really bad precedent ($$$)... Anyways, I'd say a good benchmark would be +/- $100 per person.

Seto Japanese Restaurant8460 Alexandra Road, #155, Richmond
Excellent Authentic Japanese!!!
Submitted Friday, June 27, 2008 - 12:19pm [Dine in]

My family frequents Seto about once a month. The fish Seto offers is of extremely high quality and fresh. Excellent place to dine traditional Japanese food. More expensive than the AYCE places, but the quality is obviously above and beyond AYCE by far. I've been to Tojo's twice... I know a lot of folks here have flamed Tojo's (imo mainly because of the uber high pricing), however, price aside, Tojo's offers the best Japanese food in town (IMO), but Seto is extremely comparable at a fraction of the price, so value for quality is definitely there. Definitely worth a try... you will return for more!!

Unique experience on Main
Submitted Sunday, September 17, 2006 - 10:10pm [Dine in]

Went to dine a few Sundays ago.

Service was excellent. The waiter was courteous and attentative.
Food was great as well. Unique dishes... not sure how to classify them. The portions are kinda small, but are quite surprisingly filling. Menu is not that large, but all the stuff I had was great.
Atmosphere and ambiance is very relaxing. Seems like more of a couples or dating place.
Overall great experience. Will go back again to try the other stuff.

The atmosphere in this restaurant is great. The decor is interesting. Not sure who the person beside Castro in the picture is (I'm assuming it's the owner).

The food was great. Speed was average. Service was average as well.

Will definitely visit again.
