Starry Night Restaurant9231 Beckwith Road, Richmond
A must try for anyone who appreciates a great restaurant experience
Submitted Monday, February 15, 2010 - 3:37am [Dine in]

Whenever I look up restaurants, I am always a little wary when I see reviews with such high ratings on every single category. However, this place really deserves it, and I had no hesitations whatsoever when rating Starry Night.

Food: Took my wife on Valentine's Day to try and late night menu. The food tasted great and the portions were generous. We ordered Tuna Tataki, Salt&Peppery Chicken, Prawn Wontons, and Loligo Squid. Was honestly blown away while eating the Tuna Tataki and Squid in particular. The flavours were perfect and the food was cooked just right. Please try the Loligo Squid - it is Starry Night's take on Calamari and the best I've ever had. Will go back to sample the Tonkatsu (personally recommended by the owner) and the Afternoon Tea menu.

Service: The servers were friendly, attentive and helpful. They offered to take pictures for my wife and I, introduced us to the owner, were very well informed about the restaurant and the menu, and provided very good service over all. We chatted with the owner for quite a while. He shows an obvious passion for his restaurant and it's apparent that his goal was to create excellence, rather than just make money. He gave us a personal tour of the restaurant and told us about his story and his vision for Starry Night. A very nice guy who was a pleasure to chat with.

Value: We've been conditioned to expect small portions whenever dining at a nice place - there always seems to be a negative correlation between how beautiful a place looks and how much food you get in your order. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that the prices at Starry Night are great and the portions fair (this is specific to the Late Night menu - we've only been once).

Ambiance: The place looks amazing. One of the best looking restaurants in Richmond, maybe the best.

Bonus: The second floor will feature a reflexology centre. We saw pictures and it's gonna be nice!

Terrible service trumps delicious food
Submitted Monday, February 15, 2010 - 2:57am [Dine in]

My wife and I went to Market with a large group of friends to celebrate a birthday. The food tasted great, but our entire experience was ruined because of simply terrible service. Even though I've read many other reviews echo the same thing, I went in quite hopeful that it wouldn't be as bad as people claimed. But it really was quite terrible, and even though we really enjoyed the food, we will never go back due to the horrible service.

Our server was very curt, impatient and inconsiderate with us all evening, going as far as cutting in on conversations and rudely lecturing one of my friends when she misheard something. I acknowledge the fact that many of us decided to skip drinks/appetizers/dessert, which deflated her tip a bit - so maybe that's why she was so unaccomodating. That makes it worse though, doesn't it? Good service should be consistent, and not just reserved for customers who spend a lot of money.

At the end of the meal when everybody finished paying, our server wouldn't let us go claiming that she didn't have everybody's signed credit card receipts yet. Nobody was surprised when she actually had it all along (she misplaced it) but failed to come back to our table to apologize for making us wait for no reason. In fact, she didn't even come back at all! Somebody from our party had to go find her to get an update, to which she casually said that she did have them after all. Yikes.

The only good service we received was from the busers, who were all polite and attentive. The manager was kind of a jerk and was very insincere. Kept claiming that "it was no problem" and that "they were happy to do that" when he cleared up some confusion regarding the bill. I didn't even ask him to correct anything, I was just asking a question - yet he had the audacity to come back to our table (after the matter was resolved) to say, "Just so you know, [we were right and you were wrong]... but don't worry, we were happy to take care of that for you." (Paraphrasing was done to make a long story short).

Oh, the place looked beautiful and was very well decorated.

Sakura Sushi6390 No 3 Road, #4, Richmond
my favourite sushi place
Submitted Sunday, September 20, 2009 - 10:50pm [Dine in]

The sushi at Sakura always tastes great and the prices cannot be beat. Their menu prices are lower than most sushi places, but it is actually even lower than you think because GST is already included.

The service is always awesome and the owners are very friendly. I've noticed that the roll portions seem to be a better value than the sashimi portions, so keep that in mind when ordering.

The place closes at 7pm which is a bit early, but perfectly understandable considering the owner/chef is there whenever the shop is open. Also, I'd have to agree about the miso soup being not too flavourful (it's still pleasant though!).

Sushi standouts include: salmon roll (wild!) and unagi avocado roll.

Really, no doubt about it: best tasting sushi in Richmond for the best value.

Oyasato Japanese9040 Blundell Road, #150, Richmond
not my favourite sushi
Submitted Sunday, September 20, 2009 - 10:39pm [Dine in]

I ordered 3 basic rolls, California, Dynamite and Salmon. They all tasted very bad.

Everything else about the place was average, but I will not go back because the sushi simply was very very poor. The salmon roll looked pale and tasted the way it looked. It wasn't even orange, but rather a very pale shade of beige/pink.

Matsuyama8500 Alexandra Road, #110, Richmond
i love matsuyama.
Submitted Sunday, April 20, 2008 - 3:50am [Dine in]

Order BOX A and when it arrives at your table, consider what you get in the box vs. how much you're paying for it, and then eat it. You will probably love Matsuyama too.

(If you are not very hungry, order BOX A and eat everything except the Chicken Teriyaki, which you can save for lunch the next day!) I always think that this is my signature move, but I bet a lot of people do it too.

If BOX A doesn't convince you, try the late night menu after 9pm. In particular: Crab & Tobiko Salad, Agedashi Tofu, Ebi Sunomono, and whatever sushi you enjoy - they are all great.

Chawan Mushi is good too.

Hue Cafe6620 No. 3 Rd, Richmond
best vietnamese subs
Submitted Sunday, April 20, 2008 - 3:34am [Dine in]

Everytime I go to Hue Cafe, I always order a Vietnamese sub and it never lets me down, it is so delicious and reasonably priced. Basically whenever I'm hungry and want to get something awesome, I go to there for a grilled pork Vietnamese sub. It also comes in ham, meatball, chicken, and what they call the house special, which includes several fancy meats. I like pork the best but they are all tasty.

The other day, I had to study for an exam so I got a Vietnamese iced coffee and a grilled pork sub. That's a nice one-two punch if you ask me.

Chicken Pho is also nice.
