Sushi Town5935 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Great Sushi ...
Submitted Monday, December 11, 2006 - 7:04pm [Dine in]

One of my employees recommended this place to me as she use to work there as a server. Do you know why this place is so much like Sushi Garden in Metrotown? Because the owner of Sushi Town use to work at Sushi Garden and has just decided to take the best of his former workplace and apply it to his current restaurant.

The food is always good here and the sashimi is almost insane in size when you compare it to any other sushi place in North Burnaby. There is absolutely no comparison. The service is not the greatest - a bit slow and stunned sometimes, but the food makes up for it. My favorite is the "Alaska Roll". They put this awesome salad-type dressing on the rolls that makes it out of this world. Mmmmm .... I'm actually craving one of those rolls right now. The sushi is the best here. I tried the chicken karage one time and it's nothing to write home about. Needs salt or something - there's no flavor to them at all.

It gets packed during prime-time lunch and dinner hours, but I usually go before or after prime-time hours so I don't have to line up. I can see this place getting busier and busier once people find out about it. So remember, it's Sushi TOWN ... not Sushi GARDEN ... I still get mixed up by the two names because they are so similar.

Biercraft Tap and Tapas Bar1191 Commercial Drive, Vancouver
Great place for a drink and to people watch ...
Submitted Sunday, December 10, 2006 - 1:36pm [Dine in]

I was going to Commercial Drive to grab a quick pizza-by-the-slice when my companion convinced me to walk up the drive to see if we could have a sit-down dining experience. So, we walked up to Stella's and was quickly seated at the back (the place was packed)! Before being seated, we asked the hostess what she would recommend. Calamari and the prawns, she said ...

When we got to our seats, we went over the long list of tapas items and decided on the calamari, beef carpaccio, bay scallops and mussels. I had a glass of wine while my companion tried their bottled specialty beer and their draft beer. The server was great, as well as the atmosphere, but the food was mediocre at best. My companion didn't think much of the beer (but he was experimenting) and we both did not care for the calamari or mussels at all and the carpaccio and scallops were just okay. Nothing about the food had a "wow" factor to it. But we both said that we would go back to Stella's for the ambiance and to people watch.

Anton's Pasta Bar4260 E Hastings Street, Burnaby
Pick the white sauce ...
Submitted Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 4:47pm [Dine in]

I've been to Anton's years ago (when I was in high school) and can barely remember what I ordered back then, but did remember that they served a ton of food. I also remember the 1.5 hour wait in the dinner line-up, which I will never do now. So, to get away from the line ups, I went to Anton's at lunch (after the their lunch rush - about 2:00 pm).

I had their seafood pasta (prawns, shrimp, scallops), topped with mushroom and a great-tasting white sauce. If a white sauce is not salty/garlicy enough, I usually don't enjoy it, but Anton's pasta definitely did not disappoint. I would have finished the whole plate myself, but I had some help from my lunch companion, so I didn't need a doggy bag (my dog is very disappointed needless to say ...)

For lunch, their servings are more than enough to satisfy. I think the dinner serving is just way too much food for one person, so I'll by-pass the dinner line ups and a food serving that's large enough to feed a small country and stick to the lunch serving and no waits to get a seat.

Le Do Vietnamese Restaurant2292 East Hastings Street, Vancouver
If your under the weather, try the beef noodle soup ...
Submitted Sunday, December 3, 2006 - 9:14pm [Dine in]

Whenever I'm feeling under the weather or if it's a cold day out (like it was today), a nice bowl of hot Vietnamese soup can do wonders for the body. My favorite Vietnamese restaurant for a nice bowl of pho would be Le Do on Hastings. I usually get the clear seafood noodle soup (which includes prawns, squid, artificial crab and fish balls), but their regular pho is awesome as well. Their meatball sandwiches are excellent too and I usually order the meatballs and the bun separately, so I can make my own little meatball sandwich. Their spring rolls, on the other hand, need a bit of work as I've had plenty better spring rolls elsewhere.

You get a great deal for your money at this restaurant. $25 for two people can have you walking out of there full and content.

One suggestion that I would make to the proprietors of this restaurant is to get a better exhaust system - we smelled like we SWAM in a bowl of pho after we left. But if you don't mind smelling like a bowl of pho, then go for it!

Phnom Penh Restaurant244 E Georgia St, Vancouver
I drove an hour in traffic for the wings ...
Submitted Saturday, December 2, 2006 - 9:54pm [Dine in]

After finishing a clearance show in Abbotsford tonight, I had a craving for some Phnom Penh chicken wings. So, with my sister in tow, we drove from Abbotsford to Chinatown (an hour in traffic!) to get our fix. This restaurant did not disappoint. We ordered a lot of food: (1) the chicken wings (which, by the way, a table behind us was eyeing at, so I gave them one to try out ... needless to say, they ordered their own plate), (2) the prawns (made the same way as the chicken wings), (3) the butter beef and (4&5) TWO plates of filet beef on rice. Needless to say, we enjoyed everything that we ate. It was all so amazing.

This restaurant produces amazing dishes, ones that cannot be found anywhere else in the city - which is probably why they are always busy. It must be that addictive ingredient that they put into their food that gets everybody coming back for more and more. The only downside is the service. We had to ask 3 different servers for our soup that went with our filet beef on rice and nobody came by the ask us how our meal was (even though they asked the table behind us). Maybe they knew that we were enjoying our food so much that they didn't need to ask?

It's no wonder that Urban Rush put this restaurant down as one of their Top 10 Best. It's definitely way up there in my books.

Burgers Etc. BBQ House4091 Hastings St., Burnaby
I read the menu first before writing my review ...
Submitted Thursday, November 30, 2006 - 12:26pm [Dine in]

I just discovered this site and what a wealth of information it is. Although after reading all the reviews, I must agree with some other fellow reviewers that some people do expect a bit much out of restaurants and with one bad experience, will write a review that (and I'm quoting here ..) "WOULD SEEM AIM AT DESTROYING SOMEONE'S BUSINESS". This is the very reason that I write this review today.

Burgers Etc. is in my neighbourhood and I frequent it all the time (as do many people ... as I am now finding out during my short waits for a table during the lunch rush). What I find disturbing about Tony3's review below is that if he had indeed READ the menu, it specifically states that they use ground chuck steak for their burgers and they serve their burgers MEDIUM WELL (this is stated in RED so that people see it) - so yes, the burger would indeed be pink when served to you. If you want it well done, just ask the server to have the kitchen make it so. Telling people that your burger was undercooked (when in fact it was served the way it was suppose to be served) is terrible ... and could possibly destroy the proprietor's business if one didn't know the facts.

So I am here to redeem one of my favorite restaurants, because I want them around for a long time! Their burgers are great ... and I have also discovered their spicy chicken burgers (so juicy!) and the beef dip sandwiches (the smoked meat is amazing). I'm going to have to stop by for dinner one time and try one their BBQ platters - sample it all in one shot!
