Nice little hang out

I had avoided Temple for awhile thinking it seemed like a trendy, overpriced place with tiny portions. I was wrong.

The atmosphere is lovely, and the decor gorgeous. It's quiet and laid back, with music loud enough to enjoy but not to drown out your conversation.

I ordered their "Dark & Stormy" to drink, which was ginger beer and rum I believe. It was very good and a nice alternative to overly sweet cocktails.

Then we found the cheapest appetizer on the menu expecting it to be small so we wouldn't fill up. It was the pomme frites, for only 8, and it turned out to be a heaping mountain of 'em. Surprisingly great deal for such a fancy place.

We both ordered the featured risotto, which was a concoction of pumpkin, sage and eggplant. I had mine with chicken, my husband had tofu. I expected a couple dices of chicken here and there, but instead there was a large, gourmet roasted thigh sitting on top.

All in all, for a place that I thought would be skimpy on portion and high in price, it was really a good value after all. I still had enough of my meal to reheat the next day. I hope this one sticks around.

Tropical Island3690 Shelbourne Street, 1, Victoria
My favorite food place in Victoria, period!

Ever since my husband and I tried Tropical Island, we've been addicted. I can't go longer than two weeks without their tropical beef, or the tropical fruit cocktail rolls (amazing and unique!). This place really makes conventional Asian seem dull.

Because it's out of the way, we usually order in and the quality is superb. My tropical beef is a crispy dish, and it always arrives perfect and never soggy.

The couple times we did eat at the restaurant, the service was very friendly. At times they seemed a little frazzled, but the place was packed and there was only two of them, so it's understandable. The decor is nothing special, but with food this good it hardly matters.

Nice view, bad food

I went here on my two-year wedding anniversary and was very disappointed.

First of all, the panoramic view of the city is amazing. Too bad the upholstery looks like it's from the early 80's. No big deal, though. The naan chips brought out were okay and our server seemed pleasant if a bit nervous.

So, I ordered a steak and was warned that it was "slow-roasted" and would take a little longer. So, about 45 minutes later, it arrives--and it's cold. I inform the waiter of this and he doesn't seem to know what to do. He even tells me that "sometimes that happens because of the way it's sliced." How is that acceptable? I didn't want to wait another 45 minutes because we were headed to a movie afterwards. But it would have been nice to have it offered. Instead, we just got free dessert.

I tried to fill up on my side dishes while waiting for the cheesecake, but the asparagus was hard and borderline raw. The pomme frites were the only good part. And the cheesecake was a little too thick and bitter for me.

Overall, horrible experience and I still got charged $30+ for the steak that was too cold to be edible. Get your act together, Vista 18.
