Fire & Water Fish and Chop House728 Humboldt St, Victoria
One more fine restaurant for downtown
Submitted Tuesday, April 22, 2008 - 5:54pm [Dine in]

We've been there for dinner three times.
The hotel is MUCH better than the usual [US]Marriott - the lobby is beautifully
and elegantly furnished. THe dining room is equally very pleasing.
The staff hit just the right balance between being over-attentive and ignoring the
customers - they are attentive without being obtrusive.

The cuisine is West Coast; the ingredients are fresh and the dishes are beautifully but simply
prepared. The wine list is more than adequate and the prices relative to the
quality are reasonable. What more would a foodie want?? Places like this help to make living in Victoria a privilege.

A very good restaurant -- in Langford!
Submitted Tuesday, April 22, 2008 - 5:46pm [Dine in]

THe food is very, very good Southern BBQ, plus veggie and seafood items for
the non-carnivores. The service and ambiance are also very good and the price is right for
lunch, which we've had twice. THe above said everything I wanted to say but
this site strangely insists on 300 characters. Highly recommended.

Terrible service, beer OK
Submitted Tuesday, April 22, 2008 - 3:28pm [Dine in]

The service at the Bent Mast, an attractive local James Bay pub, is terrible again. It has been good to terrific for the last few years [Sarah was wonderful!] but now Lindsay has arrived.
A polite request for the bill yielded a long delay. A second polite request yielded
the "I'm your server not your servant!" snarl.

I gave my opinion of this appalling lack of professionalism with a one-cent tip. She retaliated by informing us that she would not serve us in future. So be it.
So, the room is attractive, the beer is good, the food is OK [but nothing special], but best to stay away until Lindsay departs. Which won't be long, if they want to stay in business.

Gatsby Mansion Inn & Restaurant309 Belleville St, Victoria
Submitted Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 8:50pm [Dine in]

We visited on 16 February 2007. We waited 15 minutes for the wine, and 5minutes more for the breadbasket. THe entrees took an hour to arrive. When they finally arrived, the sablefish was half-cooked. When it was returned, it was overcooked and the veggies were soggy. However, the ambiance is very good indeed.

The waiters were very polite and competent but obviously being run off their feet. Perhaps the cooks were too. Gatsby's was good two years ago, but not any more. Places like this put Victoria's tourist industry at risk.
