good for take out
Submitted Sunday, April 29, 2007 - 11:34pm [Dine in]

Eaten here a couple of times, but prefer to get take out or delivery.

Quite enjoy their tuna nigiri (sorry about the spelling) and the pork gyoza are really good; however, not too keen on the Kapa maki here - the seaweed tends to be dry. Food is made pretty quick which is nice.

The older lady never seems to smile or make conversation and sometimes have to wait a while to place an order or have empty plates cleared.

It's a nice bright room, but nothing special, an average Japanese restaurant.

Great Traditional Steak House
Submitted Friday, April 6, 2007 - 6:28pm [Dine in]

Have to admit it has been quite a while since we have dined here, purely due to our current finances, no reflection on the restaurant.

The cheese bread here is to die for, yes it is a little greasy but it sooo good. Just thinking about it I want to go back. I like the way the Caesar salads are prepared table side, and the steaks have always been juicy and tender in our experience.
We always found the waiter staff to be very knowledgeable and friendly, in particular Peter, we used to request him, and the bussers are very good at keeping your water topped up.
The decor there is a little old but that is part of the appeal, all that dark wood is quite sexy, makes you think of all the tradition and people that have dined there over the years.

nice comfortable place
Submitted Friday, April 6, 2007 - 5:57pm [Dine in]

Having seen a couple of restaurants come and go in this location over the last few years I wanted to give this one a shoot in case they go the same way.

The host was a very happy friendly guy and certainly made us smile; the server on the other hand made no effort at conversation just took the order and cleared our plates.
The bread first brought to the table didn't quite taste right; however the rest of the food was very enjoyable. Garlic Naan bread, Chicken Tikka, rice and Lamb Vindaloo, although the Vindaloo could have benefited from a little more veg.
I like what they have done with the room, has a very comfortable feel, clean and modern yet not too over the top.

Not what they claim to be
Submitted Friday, April 6, 2007 - 5:40pm [Dine in]

As previous reviewers have said this place is all hype, they are not what they claim to be.
The room looks good in their advertising, but have their promoters actually sat in those chairs for an extended period of time? Believe me when you eat at Nu you are seating for quite a while, the food takes longer there than any other restaurant we have eaten at in Vancouver. Once we got the food it was okay, but considering the prices I was expecting it to be more filling and flavorful. Also, the plate ware is on the silly side considering the small size of the tables, every time something was brought to the table we had to juggle things around.
The server was quite condescending and obviously did not know the menu, even said "I don't know" to one question my friend asked, that in itself wouldn’t have bothered me if he had made the effort to go to the kitchen and find out, but no.
It was also quite loud in there; all the windows provide a nice view of the water though.

Best Huomous in town
Submitted Sunday, March 11, 2007 - 6:11pm [Dine in]

I love the Houmous at Takis, out of all the Greek/Mediteranean restaurants we have been to none of them compare to Takis. We've been here on and off for about six years and its still my favourite Greek restaurant, great for a casual lunch.

I just do not understand why people are willing to line up on the street for Stepho's when this wonderful restaurant is just a few doors down. For a couple more dollars you get better quality food and an overall much more enjoyable experience at Takis.
The service is usually pleasant and helpful, especially Ivon, he is especially attentative.
The mismatched chairs and pillows give great character to the space.
Will definitely continue to dine here.

it used to be so good
Submitted Friday, March 9, 2007 - 9:27pm [Dine in]

Wow, what happened to this restaurant? We used to dine there all the time over the last 10 years and the food was great; even got married there.

They must have switched Chef's or something, over the last 4 years the food just hasn't been the same. The final straw was last year (only just discovered this website) when my husband ended up with food poisoning after what he thought were questionable prawns in the penne rustica. The food used to be so flavourful and rich, I especially used to enjoy their tomato cream sauce on the cannelloni. We went back recently to see if anything has improved, but no, like other reviewers have said the pastas are very bland.
The service is decent, nothing special, they are generally polite and helpful although things ie replacement cutlery, napkins take a little while.
We still love the building, its different rooms and the history, it has so many special memories for us... but we probably won't be back, at least for a while.
