Miura Waffle Milk Bar2521 Main Street, Vancouver
One word: Fantastic.
Submitted Sunday, August 15, 2010 - 4:34pm [Dine in]

Miura Waffle + Milk Bar is a fairly new addition to the Davie Street Restaurants. It's original and fresh, and it's certainly something I'd never (nor have many people) thought of starting a business in. I originally wanted to try what they had to offer months ago, but never had time to - sadly, they were closed whenever I was in the Davie St. neighbourhood. (They are closed from 2PM-5PM)

The food:
The whole concept of waffle sandwiches has never occured to me in my life. Waffles are a tasty treat, but fill it with amazing things such as their delicious cream and fruits or bulgogi with kimchi, egg and meat -> it becomes phenomenal. I can't even describe to you how much bliss my mouth was feeling when I had my first bite into their bulgogi sando. The waffle was thinner than the Sweet Waffle sandos they had, but it was perfect for a savoury waffle. What's even more amazing: they actually put the meat INTO the waffle batter, so you don't have to worry about the best parts falling out!!! Their sweet waffle sando (Fruits & cream with seasonal fruits) was delicious also! Actually, as I write this review, my mouth is watering with the thought of it. The best part: they come out with NEW waffle sandos! I am so excited to come back and try their new selection of sweet waffle sandos :)!!!

The service:
Top notch. The waffles came quickly, and we could actually see them making the waffles (No Eggo waffles!!) More over, the restaurant owners are almost always visibly present and they are both very welcoming and sweet.

The Value:
It is great. The prices for the food are fantastic. Not only is it wallet friendly, but the quality of the food - outstanding. I have no other words to say about it.

The restaurant itself is quite small, but the tables and chairs are super classy. The whole interior of the restaurant is beautiful, actually... extremely classy. As I said before, you can actually watch them making the waffles! It's a very pretty place to eat. Their deck/patio is quite awesome also, especially in the summer heat. People passing by always have curious eyes and say to themselves 'we should totally go there'... and they're right. Anyone passing by or is in the Davie St area should definitely drop by.

All in all: I cannot wait to go back there again!

Yama Sushi1232 Ross Road, North Vancouver
Favourite sushi in the Lynn Valley area
Submitted Sunday, August 15, 2010 - 4:15pm [Dine in]

There are many sushi places in Lynn Valley. They're all quite close together, so the choices are abundant. However, Yama Sushi definitely tops all of the other sushi joints in this area.

The food:
Great! I've ordered a fair amount of their food: from the bento boxes, lunch specials, maki rolls, appetizers and sashimi: they're all consistently delicious. I have yet to have a bad experience with this place. In my opinion, the best would be their BC Roll... it's amazing. The bento boxes are a great deal.. however, they vary with taste from time to time. They probably premake the bentos and hence why at times it's cold for the tempura and the chicken. The salad with it is kind of pointless, but the dressing is tangy and delicious. For the value, it's quite good. You'll see what I mean if you drop by!

The Service:
AMAZING. This restaurant never fails to make me WANT to keep coming back. The waitresses are always so cheery and happy, never rude or snappy like some other sushi joints I've been to. The sushi chefs are there and you can watch them make the sushi: but the best part is that they're all so welcoming. I feel that their welcoming nature makes the restaurant even more of a pleasure to go to.

As I said, the price for the food is great and you never have to worry about blowing your wallet. For example, for a dinner for four with three different bento boxes and one sushi special and a few rolls: the most I've ever had to pay was $32. It's great.

The place is really small and cramped, but on the walls are cute Japanese decor... However, the best part about it is the bulletin board with the pictures of their customers. It's sweet and cute. The only problem is that it's always busy - understandably, with great value of food and awesome service.

This is definitely one of my favourite spots to hit for sushi!

Yuko Maki1540 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver
Worst service. EVER.
Submitted Sunday, August 15, 2010 - 3:59pm [Dine in]

I`ve been to Yuko Maki on Lonsdale many, many times. It was my favourite place to get cheap sushi bites(3 different kinds of sushi for 5.95$! Can`t go wrong with that!) The keyword: "was".

Food & Value: It`s cheap, yes, but understandably: It is not amazing sushi. For example, one time when I ordered their 3 for 5.95$ combo, not only did they promise 6 slices per maki ordered on that combo, it only came with four. Moreover, their BC Roll tasted funny. There was absolutely no sauce on it, and more importantly, I think there was a bone or two in mine. Not pleasant... More than just the 5.95$ combo, one of my friends ordered their chicken bento box. It looked good but it was cold and overall unsatisfying - they could not finish it. Sometimes their food is better though - especially for the prices, you can`t go wrong going there.

Service: However it is their service that definitely makes a trip there a waste of time. Case in point:

I went here last Thursday (Aug. 14) to order some sushi, hoping my friend and I would get amazing sushi. No. We didn`t. We didn`t even get a TABLE. We walked up to the front desk and clearly asked for a table for two, and stood waiting there. The waitress just gave us monotonous look and a snappy reply: 'just wait a few minutes'. My friend was looking around the restaurant and saw that there was a table in the back that would fit the two of us perfectly, but...

Another couple walked in five minutes after us, asking for a table for four. The waitress took a two second glance to look at us and asked the people with the party of four to go with her, taking the table at the back that would have seated us. I don't know if it's because my friend and I clearly looked like students who wouldn't buy much or if it's because they had a bigger party - either way it aggravated us.

Yes, I understand that they had a bigger party, but we did arrive at the restaurant earlier. It would have been nice, too, if they'd bothered to say 'just please wait a few more moments', but no, they just completely dismissed us and left us hanging. Actually, I wouldn't care too much if their waitresses were just a little bit nicer. But they weren't. They were the rudest waitresses I'd ever encountered... and that's the only thing that's consistent about this restaurant. It makes the ambiance worse if the waitresses don't even smile or bother to acknowledge your existence.

Needless to say, I'm positive there is NO WAY I will be returning to this so called 'restaurant' anytime soon.
