I used to be such a fan....

Well, what can I say? The title shoud say everything. I wrote a glowing review for the Main Street location, which I find myself having to retract. But this odd for the new Commercial location.

1) Staff didn't seem comfortable with the style of food at all.
2) Apps: we had the beef patties and wings. The patties were flavorless, almost no spice or substance. What makes the Jamacian Beef Patties what they are... Just wasn't there. They were a far cry from what they once were. The chutney was neither up to the past. As for the wings I didn't have so I can't comment.
3) Main dish: Jerk Chicken Roti - Funny I raved about it before but I can't do it this time. It's not that it was bad, it just wasn't really all that good. Certainly not worth the hour wait for it.

Who knows, perhaps they were understaffed in the kitchen, but overall this was a terrible experience. Compiled with the increasing drop in quality and service at Main location, they lost 3 long time customers tonight.

I would no longer suggest to any real far of Caribbean food.

3) Service: p

This is how it's supposed to taste

So here we have it.... I've written a review for my second favorite place for Roti.... Here's my number one. This is how a Roti is supposed to be. You want authentic? You want to know how it REALLY tastes? Then you best go out of your way to this diamond in the rough.

They've had a little bit of a rough time not too long ago with a break in, but they are THANKFULLY pushing through. Now, if you like it spicy, make sure you tell them... just be warned, you may just be wiping the sweat from your brow.

May be reason there are no others.

Sadly, not too many rib joints in Vancouver.... Maybe MB's is why. I mean I think Tony Roma's is still around, which is nice to get different styles of ribs... but it's still Tony Roma's. There's a reason Memphis Blues wins awards. It's in a class of it's own. Best be hungry and dainty just doesn't work. You're gonna get a little messy, but you'll love every second of it.

The ribs a slow cooked to perfection. If you can figure out the right time to go (when they pull them out), good on ya'. I'm sure not sharing that info. ;þ The sauce is served on the side so that you can put as little or as much as you like. Then if you're like me (some call this freakish?) and like to crunch on the cartilage as well, the Rib Ends are perfect for you. Their Potato Salad and Baked Beans are fantastic. If you’re in to ribs, you know about them already. If you don’t…. Where the hell have you been?

Pass the Calypso sauce!

Alright... Only reason I haven't written a review on The Reef before is that I hadn't known about this site long. I've frequented The Reef ever since it opened at this location. While the menu's changed over time.... unfortunately some of my favorite apps have gone with the cooks. Mmmmm Dean's Doubles were great. Tostados too.

However, that's not to say that the rest of the menu isn't great. I've been looking for good Roti for as long as I can remember. To date, I only know of two places in the Lower Mainland that have it. While The Reef is my second choice for Roti, it's still pretty good.

The atmosphere is one of the best parts for me. I haven't come across another restaurant which can match it. It’s always abuzz with floods of patrons and deservingly so. This summer, make sure you get there early to grab a patio seat, order up a pitcher or 5 of Mojitos and just relax and enjoy the music while you people watch. By the way… try the Ox Tail. ;)

This hidden gem is certainly worth a visit… then many revisits thereafter. Ever since I was introduced to the cafe I've found myself going on an increasingly regular basis. The owners, who are extremely friendly, help to make it a perfect place to just hang out and relax. The atmosphere is exactly what you need to unwind or just chill.

Now the food… The food is something else. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve had to date and the best part is that they rotate the menu. There’s always something new, or an old favorite popping back up when you come in. To be honest, I don’t think I can do it justice. You just have to stop in and give it a shot… You definitely won’t regret it.
