OMG - How is this chain still in business????
By princess123 of New Westminster BC (150 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, June 11, 2012 - 11:57am [Dine in]

Went on a sunday night. Party of 5 had to wait 15 minutes even though there were lots of available tables. Parties of 4 or less seated immediatedly.

Once seated we waited 15 minutes to be acknowledged and a further 10 for drinks. Beer and wine took over 20 minutes because as we could see there was no bartender and then when the girl came by she said she was waiting for someone old enough to serve them. REALLYY?? SERIOUSLY?? Also to note is their worst wine(Peller estates) is more expensive than decent wines at other good chains like Earls and Milestones.

The kid ordered deep fried macaroni and cheese nuggets more so because she could not believe such a thing existed and then wished it hadn't. They came with exactly 7 french fries.Kids meal also came with a drink which was fine and 3 mini ice cream cones - cute but the ice cream was so storage abused that it was full of ice crystals. Gross.

The adults had1 pizza and 1 of the plain type pastas. This is $12 each and worth about $1 in ingredients. The pizza was basically like a frozen no name brand pizza and the Spaghettini arrabiata was not spaghettini but spaghetti. You would think and "Italian" place would know the difference. The sauce was awful and too hot even though I like spicy.

Teenagers had stuffed ravioli which consisted of 8 raviolis each in a nasty sauce and rang in at $17.99 EACH!!! This stuff is at best costco quality and the kids said it was BLAND BLAND BLAND. They only ate it because they are teenagers.

The "all you can eat salad and bread" free - is actually what you pay for in your meal as the food is such low quality. The boys did eat a lot of bread but it was about the only edible thing in the meals. The tossed salad was "dry as the sahara' one teen stated and I've had better caesar salad at McDonalds.

Ok to be fair, the only reason we came here was because someone who doesn't know we like to eat decent food gave us a gift card. We were going to use it at the one in Coquitlam Centre but wonder of all wonders it went out of business and closed! I'm sure this one wil be next - DO NOT waste your hard earned money on a bunch of Costco Food reheated by 14 year olds. Honestly, the food at Costco is much better.

Good Service....At least

We have been to East Side Mario's a few times now, and have suprisingly received decent service and food, despite the restaurants many poor reviews. Our last visit was however, not the greatest. My fiance and I ordered a half price pizza appy (discounted with the purchase of two drinks, for whatever reason) while we waited for the remainder of our party of four to arrive. The appetizer took about 30 minutes, when it finally did arrive we discovered hair in the pizza. Our server did promptly apoligize and the pizza was removed from the bill. Our mains took about 40 minutes, (we were one of maybe four tables in the whole restaurant, this seemed a little excessive.) My stuffed pasta dish was okay, asparagus was tough, but ok.....until I discovered a piece of plastic in it. My fiances Chicken Parmesan was small and sort of resembled a hockey puck, looked nothing like what was pictured on the menu....seemed like a bit of a rip off for $17.99, especially when they advertise the dish as "a larger portion upon demand." Service was okay, our waiter did grab my $7.00 drink and remove it from the table while it was still 2/3 full, by the time I'd noticed it he was long gone, a little frusterating, but overall not bad service. Don't know that we'll be back to East Side Mario's anytime soon?!

None of us ever returned

This place is really close to our office, but nobody in my office ever returned after their first try.

The food has no style or clear definition. The menu is complicated and you have no idea what kind of cuisine they are good at. The food is so so and more close to the bad end. The food is what made all of us wanted to stay away.

There is basically no service, the waitress rarely came around.

The place look like a big empty space - don't give you the feeling of a restaurant. The table and chair are terrible. It was made like a bar with all those tall chairs - very uncomfortable.

Very disappointed

Overpriced for the quality of food and the ambiance. I don't understand the why there is a line up to get in. It was so loud you couldn't talk without repeating yourself and raising your voice. Maybe it appeals to some families with young children, there was lot's of those running around (reminded me of a Chucky Cheese restaurant). Personally, even when my kids were young I wouldn't have enjoyed it. Pasta was so salty I couldn't eat it, presentation was non-existent. Service was acceptable considering it was so busy, no complaints about the server. Had heard it was a great place to go but I was very disappointed. I will never go back.

We were quickly seated after 10:00 pm Friday night, all of us starving. The waiter was quite helpful and quick offering us two large bowls of caesar and garden salads. Yes there was too much dressing on the salads. The bread was fresh and hot and seemed to be homemade. We ordered two servings of the special calamari and I have to say it was really different, fresh with a light breading with simmered peppers at the bottom of the pan. We all dug in. We ordered pastas and pizzas and although not true gourmet food it was decent. The seafood linguine was not cooked properly as it was a bit mushy. The seafood, especially the scallops, was quite good. The pizza looked pretty good and was served square instead of round. The wine list was definitely lacking for sure although the caesar drink was top notch. All in all a pleasant experience although not absolutely dying to return.

For an Italian Restaurant I wouldn't recommend the pasta. It was undercooked and cold. Not only mine, but everyone at the table. They re-made everyone's pasta at the table, but it was another 30 minutes for the new plates to arrive.

The service was slow even though there seemed to be enough staff working. However our waitress was very nice and accommodating. The management was abrupt and didn't leave us with a good feeling when we questioned the undercooked pasta.

The value is there for the quantity of the food you receive. There is bottom-less salad and bread which is great. But the quality of the food you're getting is poor.

The restaurant is very cramped and dark. You don't get a comfortable feeling dining there.

Overall, we won't be back.

Try the Calamari at East Side

My husband and I often go to East Side Marios before heading over to a movie at the Theatres. If you like spices and calamari you really need to try the Calamari DeAblo,, I believe it is called. It's the best, I've never tried anything like it before. Martini's are also usually pretty tasty. Bring your kids and have a great time.

Lower Priced Chain Restaurant Food

We went to the restaurant late on a Sunday afternoon and there was no line up and no waiting.

Service throughout the meal was quick, friendly and helpful.

Food was what you would expect, given the type of restaurant and the price. Tomato sauces were weak and uninspired. Pizza was OK as was the italian Wedding soup. Too much emphasis on starch and carbohydrates on the menu.

Probably good value for families with young children.

Now that we have tried it, we don't need to go back.

Food: My pasta was frozen, literally FROZEN!! My friends linguine noodles weren't boiled properly, making them chewy and stuck together. Salads are smothered with sauce.

The food takes alteast 30 mins. or more to arrive at your table...and even then you may not eat because you will haveto return it to get remade.

The service is slow and it doesn't matter if the restaurant is full or empty, its still the same pace.

The restaurant isn't laid out very good. Too many tables/chairs not enough walking room...and its sooooo loud.

I used to go there a lot, but haven't been for about 6 months and not planning on returning.

First off I hear everyone saying they have to wait so long, try not going on a Friday or Saturday night and expecting to get in right away what do you expect. I went on a Sunday evening walked in and was seated right away. Unfortunately that was the quickest service we got all night. Our waitress took our drink and food order and we didn't see her again until she asked if we wanted dessert. We ordered 2 pasta meals with salad, they delivered our meals and we sat there watching everyone else getting fresh grated cheese we had to ask for some. Don't order the calamari appy taste like freshly frozen into the deep fryer for too long costco calamari. My wife didn't mind her Linguini but I choked down my chicken cacciatore. After all that they wanted 50 bucks + tip and that was without drinks.

Too cramped, too busy

Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

I have to start this review by saying the ambience needs to be changed in this restaurant. The tables are way too close together, I feel claustrophobic sitting there. I've been there three times now. Our first dinner, I ordered Chicken Parmesan, which came with a pasta. Mine came with grilled vegetables, when I told the server, she said, "No, thats what it comes with, and thats what you told me you wanted." So it was like, fine, I'll leave it here on my plate. Don't worry about it.... So, although obviously it was a mistake, she just ignored the large pile of vegetables and took my plate away eventually.
The wait at the front is usually too much, and it almost seems arbitrary who goes frist as I have seen people go in in varying order regardless of arrival time and party size.

Everything from the wait, to the seating, service and food was horrible.

We waited 60 minutes to have the manager hand pick some friends who came in after us to be seated before us. Once we sat down the table was half made and had no forks. Drink order came and the apple juice for my 2 year old daughter didn't come until we reminded our waitress; who was MIA for close to 20 minutes after dropping off drinks.

The food was cold and came almost 60 minutes after we sat down.

The whole experience was terrible and I would not suggest going there, even if it's a 5 minute walk to the movie theaters.

This restaurant is busy because it just opened, but for being new they are totally on track. The servers are great, fast and efficient and the menu offers a variety of dishes and has a super kids menu. The only thing lacking is space the tables seem to be jamed together to offer more seating which means more $$$. My family and I will be going back.

I have eaten here on a couple of occations and had something different each time. Nothing had the WOW factor. This is just another chain restuarant with nice ambiance but I have no reason to come back. The service was a bit slow but not deal braking.

I will probably not come back unless my company insists on going there.

Very poorly run establishment. We waited way too long to be sat while open tables remained open for all to see. Once sat, the experinece went downhill. We didn't receive our menu's as we were being sat and waited literally 5 minutes before sombody came by and we had to flag them down to ask to see the menu!

The menu looked appetizing, but the food was attrocious! Everything was disgustingly salty. I was eating with 3 friends and each of our diffrent menu items were too salty to eat.

If all you are looking for is a cheap meal in a tacky environment, this might be the place for you, but do not expect to enjoy the food or the service!

Staff were unappologetic and we left dissapointed. Will not go back.

Well what can, before they closed the location we probably went to East Side about 20 times since it opened. Only couple times did we has slow service but most of the time it was good and fast. Can't say the same for the one time we went to the North Van location.

The menu changed often so that was good but the wife was disappointed when they removed the Chicken Marsala.

Now the priced did creep up quite a bit over the years and started to outweigh the quality of food.

I was quite surprised the locations closed as it was always packed when we went there.

Is this the future of restaurants?

Ive been here twice now. The first was long ago, when it first opened, but I can't remember much, but I remember it being disappointing.

Recently I went back for a birthday party. We were seated right away as it was quite early. Got drinks fast, and always had a fresh loaf of bread(the best thing they have), enough for our party of 6.

I ordered the Chicken Parmesan. When I received it I was hugely disappointed. One small piece of chicken thrown on a plate with some watery penne. No garnish, and no presentation at all. I use to never care about presentation, but as I got older I noticed it definitely helps make the dish look more appetizing, and shows some cares been put into the meal. The chicken tasted OK, the pasta just how it looked, flavorless and watered down sauce.

I have tried chicken parmesan at every Italian eatery I've been to, as it is a favorite of mine, and places do it differently. This place is about average, nothing special, with the best at The Old Spaghetti Factory(many say negative things about this place, but I have yet to have a bad experience here). It is $14 at OSF and that comes with soup/salad/bread/meal/drink/icecream. Here, it was $21. Absolutely no justification in the price at all.

The service was decent enough, nothing to really complain about.

Overall, this is just a generic "Italian" restaurant at best. Nothing about it is unique, and has no menu choices that make you want to return. Will not return if I can help it. Ive been to many other restaurants like this, and I sure hope I don't start seeing more and more establishments turn to this mediocre, high priced, bad quality theme.

Seriously, if you want dinner and a movie and were thinking of "West Side Luigis", save some money and go have a better meal at the Old Spaghetti factory.

It was our first time at this restaurant and it was our last. The spagetti was overcooked and broken in little pieces. The sauce was no better than commercial sauce in a jar. One of our dinner party members had the calimari appitizer. I could smell the fishy smell from across the table. I really hate to pay for food that I could prepare better at home. Won't go back or recommend it.

Our waiter rarely checked on us, didn't bring our appy's until about 2 minutes before our dinners, and also tried to take our food away several times. My girlfriend got one of their fruity slush drinks and it was horrible, it sat completely undrank and the waiter didn't even notice. It's also terribly crowded... I really don't like the feeling that the people next to me may as well be at our table. Add to this decent at best food and I'd avoid this place.

Went last night before a movie. When we got there, there was a 1.5 hour wait. A little bit of cash nto the right palm got us seated within 5 minutes ;)

They bring you unlimited bread and Caesar salad to start. We didn't order an appetizer because of that. They were both excellent.

Wife had a Peach Bellini which was good. I ordered a Chi Chi, she brought me a Pina Colada....which was not very good.

My wifes main course was the Lotsa Cheese Cappelletti. She said it was excellent! I had the Linguine Chicken Tetrazzini. DISGUSTING! it looked and tasted like it sat under a heat lamp for half an hour. The chicken was fatty and gross.

Service was great considering how busy it was, they had the Canucks game on which was great also.

Drinks $6 each
Wine $15
Entrees $13 and $15

Total was $60.59 add $15 tip

total $75.59

Not worth it, but I will try it one more time before I totally frown on this eatery.
