Lulu is a Lemon

We first came to Lulu cafe when it first opened years ago. We were not impressed back then.

Seeing years later that it was still in business, we decided to give them another try...

When we first walked in on a Saturday afternoon the restaurant was empty. The decor is reasonably modern. Unfortunately that's where any positive comments will end.

We were seated promptly by the 1 waitress in the restaurant. Not even 2 minutes after sitting down, she came to ask us if we were ready to order. Which we obviously weren't. We asked her to come back, and she left to do other things and seemed to have forgotten us... her only customer in the place. After waiting for a good 10-15 minutes, the cook in the kitchen noticed us, gave her a dirty look, and came and took our order for us.

We ordered a Chicken Udon noodle soup, and a Malaysian Laksa. Both items were supposed to come with drinks, but the waitress forgot to ask us for our drink orders. We had to flag her down again to ask if drinks were included, and she said "oh yes" and took our orders. Both meals came pretty quickly. The Laksa looked reasonably like a laksa. The chicken udon was over fried chicken with MSG filled soup, and some green leaf veggies. Taste wise, the udon was terrible. The chicken was extremely salty, the soup tasted like it was from an instant noodle packet, and the udon noodles were mushy. The Laksa was a bit better. The soup tasted pretty good, but the chicken was dry pieces of chicken drumsticks that were tasteless.

Price wise, Lulu's prices aren't expensive, but given the lack of quality of food, and terrible service, it's certainly not a good value. To top it off we had an ant crawling around our table during the entire meal, so cleanliness is very suspect.

Overall, a very poor experience. We definitely will not be returning and don't recommend this place.

Where's the Tea?

Tried this place one afternoon because we were craving HK style tea and food. The Laksa noodle was alright, but the tea it came with was not. Only had one slice of lemon and the tea was not very good. My beef noodle was super oily and the portion wasn't very large for $6.95. The place was empty for 3pm on a Sunday - kind of surprised since it looked like the menu was pretty decent. The waitress looked bored and didn't even ask us what drink we wanted with our meal and walked away. Something missing about this place...not sure what it is. =(

Huge menu

We were greeted promptly and given a pile of menus. It would have taken a good 10-15 minutes just to read through them, but we settled on their lunch specials. The curry beef with rice was very nicely done, not greasy and just the right amount of spice. The congee combo (with rice rolls), however, wasn't so good. The congee felt kind of starchy and the rice rolls were a little hard. Service was prompt and ambiance was also pretty good - clean and comfy. I will probably visit again to try out some of the other menu items.

Good Shanghai in Coquitlam

My sister brought me here to try out their Shanghai dimsum. It wasn't the best - but pretty darn good for Shanghai fare in Coquitlam. They have an extensive menu ranging from Shanghai to traditional chinese, to HK cafe mini set meals. Surely, there's something to please everyone - plus, they also have bubble tea!

We shared the xiao long buns, green onion pancake, and hot and sour noodle soup. All tasty, but my major complaint was that the xiao long buns had to be carefully peeled away from the bamboo steamer. More than half of them ripped and wasted the "soup" away which is the best part. Green onion pancake could use more green onion. My sister's red bean cooler tasted "off". Kinda sour and not satisfying.

Easily to find location, but if you're going to it from the other side, you need to take detour to get to it. Free parking in front, but shared with a popular sushi joint.

Ambiance was good - chairs looked uncomfortable, but strangely were cozy and comfy. I found the restaurant quite chilly.

Service was good for most-part. Near the end, it took forever to get the server's attention to get the bill and process payment.

Good Meal

Have been to Lu Lu Cafe a few times now and have enjoyed each meal. I found the service to be prompt and attentive for an Asian restaurant. The dinner 'A' which was ordered was a pretty good deal. There is soup, vegetable with beef, two huge bowls of rice, fried prawns, and fried fish. At the end of the meal dessert is included (ice cream). At a price of $31 you can gauge if this is a good price or not. I believe it is a good price.

Enjoyed and will be back to this restaurant.

Great pick up special pricing

I had the pick-up/special of 16.99 for chicken chow mein, chicken fried rice and sweet/sour pork. Good portions, came in 3 rectangular styrofoam containers filled to the top. The chow mein was my favorite of the three. Cooked quickly and served fresh with the veggies done just right, not overcooked. The portion of pork was generous and I was impressed. The employees were really nice and welcoming and I will definitely be back, probably for take out again as the atmosphere is so-so and parking here is busy.
