Metro Vancouver Restaurant Reviews
Rivers Reach Pub320 6th St., New Westminster
Early-lunch, pub-style, worked well for us!!
By 3amigos of Burnaby (50 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, April 29, 2018 - 10:26am [Dine in]

Daughter and I were in New Westminster on business one morning recently.  I offered to treat to lunch - we decided a pub lunch would/could be fun.  She recommended the River's Reach - it was handy, our timing was 'right', it was 11:20 am, open, and yea, found a parking space on the street, right there, on the side.

I really liked the "look and feel" of the place -- nice spacing of table arrangements, with almost separated areas, and different types of seating (standard tables and chairs, high tables and stools, etc.).  We chose a (standard-type) table, at the front side of the restaurant, near the back.

I ordered a pint of Rickard's Red draft (they're Tuesday 'special'), and clubhouse sandwich (on toasted white bread, came w/turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato), and fries -- daughter (the driver) opted for ice water, and a large baked lasagna (came w/mozzarella cheese, and meat sauce, and at her request, some pineapple), and garlic toast.

Friendly, accommodating service, with some rather fine-looking food presentations, and tasty, well-made preparations.  She enjoyed her lasagna (leaving a little to go back home for later), and I sure enjoyed my sandwich (leaving nothing to go back to the kitchen, or away with me).

This was a first time visit for me, and based on the dining experience, we made a fine decision, and I was most happy with daughter's choice of venue.

Mika Sushi1049 Ridgeway Avenue, Coquitlam
An enjoyable dinner dining experience.
By 3amigos of Burnaby (50 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, April 29, 2018 - 9:35am [Dine in]

Mika Sushi was our go to place for an early-dinner recently - a first time dining experience. We (senior couple & daughter) arrived shortly after 4 pm, and found parking on the street outside the restaurant. We received a nice “welcome” shout from the staff upon entry, and a server showed us to booth seating adjacent one of the side walls - once seated, a teapot of hot tea, mugs, and menus arrived at our table. Yeah, we were now left to browse the menu, and enjoy some tea.

Service to our table was fine - our server always had a nice smile, and kept our teapot full. But when ordering, I did find her knowledge and help with the menu sure seemed quite limited. With this being a first time dining experience there, I had hoped for a touch more help in assessing ’particulars’ on some dishes I was considering (mostly an observation though, and only a very minor complaint).

What was ordered and shared — Appetizers: ika karaage, deep fried oysters, and agedashi tofu — Tempura: yam and prawn — Sushi & Rolls: deluxe assorted sushi & roll combo - nigiri sushi (red tuna, ika, salmon, hamachi, amaebi, hokkigai, chopped scallop, massago, and uni roll sushi (tekka, salmon).

Rather nice presentations — dish portion sizes though, a touch on the small’ish side — but very fresh-looking, flavourful, and tasteful ingredients, and all well-prepared. A big yum!!

We enjoyed our first dining experience at Mika Sushi. But note for the next time — order more!!

IT Char Burger800 McBride Blvd, #29, New Westminster
Tasty burgers and great fries for breakfast!!
By 3amigos of Burnaby (50 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, April 28, 2018 - 11:41am [Dine in]

In New Westminster one morning for medical appointments, and had time to kill between tests, so headed over to Royal Square Mall to check out the burgers at IT Char Burger. We (threesome) arrived at the Mall about 9:30 am.

The ‘restaurant’ (food-court stall) is located inside and way at the very back of the Mall — we parked near the Mall’s main entrance, and entered there. Note: if you wish to skip the walk inside the Mall, the restaurant itself is most-easily/readily accessible via a side entrance to the Mall located right by the entrance to Safeway.

I asked the owner if it was too early to order burgers - “No, I can make you burgers.” - was his reply, and what we wanted to hear. So we were good to go!

At this still rather early time of day, their signature burger (IT char burger) looked way too big for the time, and our appetites, so with a helpful recommendation from the owner, we opted for smaller single meat patty burgers, and ordered three cheeseburgers, but via the lunch ‘combo’ (i.e., with fries & drink), so that we could taste what was anticipated to be some great fries.

Our food came out of the kitchen totally made-to-order. The burgers well-made - buns toasted, the inside ingredients plentiful, fresh, tasty, and juicy — definitely requiring a couple of napkins to fully-enjoy!! The fries were great, and all they have been cracked up to be — lightly-battered and seasoned, and cooked perfectly.

It was a fun dining experience. Food-court burgers and fries for breakfast, certainly far from our usual fare to start the day, but for this day, a rather nice, tasty, and much-enjoyed treat. A cool little place, and based on our initial taste, very capable of serving up some rather well-prepared food stuff.

Khob Khun Thai Cuisine1143 Austin Ave., Coquitlam
Thai for lunch, and it was so good!!
By 3amigos of Burnaby (50 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, April 27, 2018 - 12:28pm [Dine in]

Khob Khun was our destination for lunch, a first time visit, and it provided a most-enjoyable dining experience.  We (senior couple & daughter) arrived at the restaurant at 11 am, opening time, and easily found a space to park in the area provided along one side of the restaurant.  We were warmly-welcomed inside by the server and shown to a table by the front window (view out to Austin Ave).  Mugs of hot tea and menus (two menus - full menu, and lunch 'specials' menu) quickly followed.  First impressions of the restaurant once seated and able to get a look about -- bright, cheerful, simply, but colourfully-furnished, clean, neat, and tidy, warm, and for us, provided an almost immediate nice 'homey' feel.

Service was friendly and personal throughout our stay, and as required, attentive, and helpful, especially when ordering, being rather new to Thai food, our server's friendly help was much-appreciated.

What was ordered and shared:    (please note:  actual names, and descriptions of food dishes provided, are theirs, as per the menu listings.)

-  Tea:  Green Tea - mugs and teapot (w/refills).
-  Appetizers:  Calamari (Squid) - deep fried rings, served with sweet chili sauce -- Tao Hu Tod - deep fried tofu, served with sweet and sour sauce topped with ground peanut.
-  Noodles:  Khao Soi (Curry Noodles) - egg noodles with sliced chicken, northern Thai style curry sauce topped with crispy egg noodle, green onion, and cilantro, served with red onion, pickles, lime, and chili oil.
-  Stir Fries:  Pad Khing - with pork, ginger, mushroom, bell peppers, onion, and green onion -- Drunken Seafood - mixed seafood, with fresh chili, onion, bell peppers, kaffir lime leaves, and Thai sweet basil.
-  Rice:  Steamed Rice - small bowl.

Presentations looked so good - colourful and pretty on the white backgrounds of the differently-shaped, and rather nice serving dishes.  And especially noted, the various dishes came to our table in 'the' appropriate sequence --  appetizers first - with sufficient time allowed for us to savour and enjoy each - dishes cleared, and then the three entree dishes and side dish of rice -- perfect!!

Preparations (we asked for 'mild, spicy') - tasting the various foods sure backed up those lovely-looking (have to say "mouth-watering") presentations -- high quality ingredients, so fresh, and well-prepared, and to-the-mark with 'heat' of the spices and other flavourings used - for us, just right to truly-savour and enjoy the distinctive flavours of each.  And we had such a good and wide-range of offerings to sample -- seafoods, tofu, meat, poultry, veggies, sauces, and garnishes -- to get a really great first taste of some of the many tastes and flavours of their Thai preparations.

Our dining at Khob Khun was a delight.  I believe we really experienced the 'love & care' the owners and staff put into the operations, and food preparations of their great little restaurant in Austin Heights.

Chinese food, birthday lunch .... big yum!!
By 3amigos of Burnaby (50 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, April 27, 2018 - 11:22am [Dine in]

Friend’s was chosen as the venue for my lady’s birthday lunch recently. We parked right in front of the entrance just after the restaurant opened at 11 am. Upon entering, received friendly, welcome greetings from staff, and like a previous visit, chose to sit at a booth alongside the restaurant’s front window. Mugs of hot tea and menus arrived as we snuggled into our seats, the tea providing a nice, welcome warm-up, as we were allowed the time wished to cruise the quite extensive menus.

Service was friendly and cordial, and very helpful, especially when it came time to place our order. We needed some advice from our server in the ‘what’ and ‘how to have prepared’ of a couple of dishes, and the help and suggestions were much-appreciated.

What we (senior couple & daughter) ordered, and shared — all dishes came from kitchen to table in a timely fashion & sequence, with portions sizes very generous, presentations looking good, and sure perking our senses and appetites!!

— BBQ 2-Meat Combo, Duck and Pork chosen, came with side dish of dipping sauce — Pan-Fried Rice Rolls in Soy Sauce, w/dipping soy sauce, and green onions & bean sprouts as garnish — Steamed Squid with Gai Lan, garnished with some sliced mushroom and carrot — Steamed Tofu with Seafood, soft tofu, w/shrimp, squid, and fish, sliced okra, mushroom, carrot, and etc., and a tasty sauce — Thai-Style Fried Rice with Chicken, w/green onion, and flavourful herbs and spices.

A big ‘yes’ to the dishes selected — they provided a nice mix of seafoods, meats, poultry, rice, and veggies, along with their distinctive textures, wonderful flavours, and tastes. Absolutely no complaints with any of the preparations — all ingredients well-prepared, warm, tasty, and flavourful. A big first taste and texture surprise/treat was the tofu & seafood dish — such a creamy delight!!

Our dining experience at Friend’s was a lot of fun and much-enjoyed — well-prepared food, and friendly, quality service — and most-importantly, the “birthday girl” had a great time!!

A fun lunch in New Westminster.
By 3amigos of Burnaby (50 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, April 27, 2018 - 9:31am [Dine in]

After completing a couple of appointments in New Westminster, The Old Spaghetti Factory was picked as the spot for lunch. We (senior couple & daughter) arrived just before the restaurant opened at 11:30 am - and once inside, chose booth seating along an inside wall. Despite the restaurant’s familiar location, for such a long time, this was a first time dining experience.

We found the ambiance inside to be ‘fun’ colourful, cheerful, and decorative — providing a nice ‘sync’ with our moods of the day. Table service was friendly, personal, and attentive throughout our stay. When asked if we wished anything to drink, daughter surprised us, and ordered sangrias (their ’classic red’ was chosen) — a nice treat, and cool start to our meals!

Entree selections were made from the list of - ‘it’s all included’ Lunch Specials: for Mom: lasagna, with green salad, hot tea, and spumoni ice cream — for daughter: pasta & greens - baked spaghetti w/meat sauce, and caesar salad, minestrone soup, spumoni ice cream, and coffee — for me: chicken clubhouse sandwich, green salad, and spumoni ice cream. The dishes were nicely-presented, portions very generously-sized, and foods & beverages decently-prepared.

Our first dining experience at The Old Spaghetti Factory was fun — we really enjoyed the atmosphere and surroundings within the restaurant, service provided was great, and the food a solid ‘ok’.

Wow! Came here again after many years to be very pleasantly surprised.
We had veal parmigiana, a tomato based pasta dish, hummus, and tiramisu. Everything tasted very fresh and homemade. Enormous portions - enjoyed leftovers later. Various smart-looking Kitchen staff brought out each dish.
It was difficult to make just one selection from the menu. With an experience this satisfying, it is going to be easy to come back and try more!

Dissapointed Family Dinner

We choose this neighborhood restaurant for the 'fine' reviews to dine with family while visiting Vancouver. The people were friendly but we found the establishment to be more 'rustic' that the pictures. The fly strips didn't quite add to the ambiance either.
We didn't bring a Spanish interpreter for the waitress thus we didn't understand much of what the meals were, and some of the orders were mixed up. Food was decent, hot & well displayed.
In the end though, the meal prices were actually more than the menu prices.
So, for the hard wooden chairs, sticky tables & bitter tasting water we shall avoid this restaurant in the future.
However, you may enjoy the establishment as it was a busy place.

The crust had bits of charcoal...For texture and to clean your teeth I guess.
There is a chemical taste to the topping and pizza over all.
I think the wings are just store bought.
There is one cheap salad to order..The menu lies.
The cans of pop were 100% spot on.
I will never order from here again.

The manager was really rude to us, ignored us, would rather talk to her bartender friend than actually provide service. Saw the manager and her bartender outside smoking weed as we were coming in as well, which is pretty unprofessional.

The food was ok and the drink prices weren't bad but when there are so many options in the area, why would you pick a place with horrible service?

Don't go here.

The owner, Lehmber Lally, who is the brother in law of Ranjit (Ron) Dhanda, who is well known in the lower mainland for his questionable business practices to say the least. Does a terrible job running his Subway restaurants. The staff is rude the food is often expired not to mention tasteless. I am surprised that Subway Canada continues to allow him to operate any Subway locations. Perhaps Mr. Lally is taking a page out of Mr. Dhanda's playbook?!?!

I am an gourmet and love to taste different kinds of food. I recently visited the above Vietnamese restaurant and found out their Vietnamese cuisines are quite outstanding, especially the noodle is quite decent and tasty. My family members from Asia like the noodle with chicken. They said that the spice seems a bit different from others, which made them remember their time in Asia.

I would visit there again, as the prices are reasonable with good value on food.

Overcooked heavily battered items with meager protein portions are not worthy of a patrons money ,neither is the tasteless stale noodle dishes.Their fried rice is an embarassment to chinese chefs everywhere. All in all a bleak dining experience to be had.

I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that this Blenz location has by far, the worst service I have ever experienced. I work close by and have since stopped going in hopes that a new manager will some day take over.
I'm assuming the food and drink is the same at every Blenz - as it's a franchise. But service effects everything (the tiny little things that add up). If the staff felt good about where they work, maybe they'd smile and customers notice that kind of thing.

When you get soup from here, you will literally get a couple noodles at best, the rest is broth and tastes like food they serve at a low end seniors care facility. My co-worker ate their egg salad sandwich and let's just say she spent the rest of her shift on the toilet. Do not eat here, dont even bother dealing with the manager with a ponytail and glasses who couldn't crack a smile if you paid her. She will argue with you when you tell her how your food or drink were made poorly, her response will coldly be "that's how we make it" no that is NOT how you make it, I have been to other blenz locations and none are run this poorly. My friend ordered a tea and the manager steeped it for maybe 30 seconds then took the bag out, she paid for an effing Tea! She should keep the darn bag! But no, she doesn't run business that way, she runs it like a soup kitchen for the homeless. If you do eat here, expect your bowels to be open gaping holes afterwards as their food is stale and just plain gross, they probably use rejected produce from subway. I feel bad for the workers who are actually nice and when this manager is working alongside them, I've literally seen her tell them to do things her way, the CHEAP way.

Some days ago, my friends and I went to White Spot to have a nice dinner and we were really excited about it, because we all had heard of its tasty food and good reputation. Honestly, this place exceeded my expectations. We didn't have to wait to be seated and we got to pick our table. The food was great and good cooked, I loved it. The server was so nice and make us feel welcome the whole time. The atmosphere was relaxing. However, we could hear people talking because the background music was low, but still I am comfortable with the whole service.
This is obviously a family restaurant, and I think there are a lot of people who actually enjoy to go there, the food is great, it has a pleasant atmosphere and the prices are very reasonable. I will definitely go back and I also recommend it to the ones who loves to have a delightful dinner. You would not feel disappointed.

One of the restaurants that I first tried at my first time in Vancouver, and he keeps being one of the bests. I used to go there with my dad a few months ago, but I also experienced with my friends. In general this restaurant is amazing! The experience that we had is incredible from the beginning till the end. They receive you appropriately and always smiling. Looking to be happy that they are there waiting for a new guest. The atmosphere and the ambiental music matches perfectly with the restaurant. We are not a good fans of drinking but, they have a bar and a lounge for those that want. They speciality are the steaks and in my particular opinion, I definitely recommend the Top Sirloin. We did not have to wait much time until the food arrive, they are quite quick. The variety of the menu were perfect for us. If you do not want to spend too much money, you can order some appetizers and share with your friends. There was any kind of mistake committed,I have no words to give them a bad critic. The experiences I had there, was memorable and I definitely want to spend more time there in the future.

Like Greece is the pearl of the Mediterranean, Vassilis Souvlaki Greek Taverna is another gemstone (or Ferrari) in Burnaby! The restaurant itself is painted white and blue (Greek signature colors) and their background Greek music is pleasing. It is a perfect place to feel exotic. The food is served with high quality of Greek traditional flavors. However, there was only one server in the restaurant, plus the owner as a host, sometimes we needed to wait for the server. Besides, I went there with regular customers and according to them, the owner is quite special. Anyway, among mezedes (Greek appetizers), we ordered Kalamarakia (Deep-fried squid) and Feta with olives (the famous Greek cheese), they were impressive because Kalamarakia even reminded me of my hometown Taiwanese food. I have no idea that the cheese can be so special especially, for it’s between fried and baked styles. No complaints about my chicken souvlakia; this dish was incredibly delicious with Greek salad, rice pilaf, roast potatoes, and tsatziki. The atmosphere was awesome and relaxing and the price for the food was definitely worthy. No wonder it is the best Greek restaurant in Burnaby for the last 15 years!

We used to call this our "go to"pub, but after last night we are off to find another eatery.
My fav meal the roast beef dip sandwich came with a very small portion of meat, and fries and the salad was also sad.Bun needed a steak knife to cut, fries greasy and must have sat under the warming light.Beer RED TRUCK was perfectly cold and so it should be. Waitress was NOT busy and she was friendly. How can pub grup quality and volume change ... must be cut backs and the competition in this area is huge.Hope they survive. So many more eateries to choose from in Sunny south Surrey, goodbye Original Joe's.
In hind sight we should have mentioned our disappointment, but it was a somewhat special occasion and didn't want to fuss.
