We haven't been back here for a while as we had previously found the quality of the food was getting worse. So we went back recently to see if things had improved.
Bottom line - it has got worse! One of our friends ordered the salmon and it was covered with a tomato based sauce which totally obscured the flavour of the fish. I suspect this was to hide the fact the salmon was supposed to be fresh but was probably frozen.
My wife ordered the chicken and found the texture very strange. We think it was probably previously frozen and probably pre-processed. We asked the waiter who shrugged his shoulders as if he didnt know or care.
The pasta is not freshly made and was not al dente, rather "molto morbido".
This place seriously needs a "restaurant makeover" and a "menu makeover" and a "chef makeover"!!
Bye bye La Baia - we will not be back.
The three of us went there last night, Thursday 4th Aug. for the first time. My son has been there before however. We were the first ones to arrive so we had our choice of tables. Took the best table on the patio which allowed us to people watch and see all the happenings on the street. Charming hostess greeted us warmly. The menu was what I expected it to be for a good restaurant varied but not too extensive. Each one of us ordered something different to sample the overall flavourings of the chef. Had a chance to sample the chefs duck spread. Mmm mmm good.
For starters we had the Crab Cake, Coquilles Saint-Jacques (Scallops) and Calamari. The Crab Cake is to die for. Great texture and one of the best I've tasted. Scallops were superb, not over done with an excellent cream sauce. The Calamari was simply done, seems on a skillet. Had the the right flavour to pair favourably with the French white Bordeaux that we were drinking.
For Mains we had the Rabbit, the Lamb and the Bouillabaisse. I personally didn't get a chance to try the Rabbit due to my 16 yr old son was relishing in it so much that I didn't want to diminish his experience with a Wabbit. The taste of my Bouillabaisse was outstanding and had the presentation to match. My wife's lamb was cooked spot on to her request of medium well and had a good presentation as well. Accompaniments/garnishes to each meal seemed to be to exacting standards. Very good sweet cabbage and grilled pepper. The shoe string french fries for the table were tasty as well.
For Dessert and Coffee we had the Upside down Apple Tart, Chocolate Cake and Friut Tart. I only tried the Apple Tart and the Choc Cake. Both were very well done. Coffee was perfectly pressed, I think. Rich flavour that required nothing to be added.
We've travelled to various regions of France on many occasions with the latest being in April this year. On many levels it's difficult to replicate the total experience of restaurant themes from one country to another. Other than being hungry the major reason one goes to a particular restaurant is for the taste. This chef on this occasion has exemplified his skill in attention to taste marvelously. Flavours were balanced and understated with no flavour over powering another. All flavours came through as they should. You could taste the richness of the foods without it being greasy and heavy. My spasmatic gall bladder had no issue.
In summation this restaurant would not be out of place in France where how the food tastes is the golden rule. An indication of a restaurants food quality can not be judged by it's location, atmosphere or paper napkins etc. Pricing is what it is. It may not be for the every day but two to three times a month should not be an issue for most people. We left very satisfied and I'll be back.
My friend suggested we have dinner here while we were visiting the beach. It was my first time dining at Charlie's so I was pretty excited. The place is dark. Really, really dark. The booth we had felt like I was sitting at a booth at a night club. Haha, but it was nice! The interior is beautiful, and I loved the restrooms (mirrors-galore).
Service: Food took an extremely long time to come out. Our waitress asked if we wanted our appetizers before our mains, and we said yes. Well...the appetizers arrived at our table 1 minute before our other food came :S We had to ask for our refills for our drinks. Waitress only came back once to check on us and how the food was. And then once more to give us the bill and to collect empty plates. She was friendly though. Hostess was not very helpful when we wanted to pay our bill.
Food: Bruschetta was okay. I could have made that at home. Calamari was good. Spicy Italian Sausage Penne was.....meh. Ate about 1/3 of it. My Coke tasted like...Diet Coke?? :|
Overall, I have no idea what made me tip 15% (probably because I liked the restroom too much)... walked outta there thinking I will not come back. I think my friend liked it though.
I went to Charlie Dont Surf, but I was hesitant after reading the reviews about bad service. We went and I saw no reflection of bad service anywhere. I thought the service was really good. We got a table on the Patio as requested. We had 3 drink refills without even asking for them. The appetizer came out within 10 min,. My husband had the Chicken Curry Pasta and thought it was one of the best he ever had. I had a chicken burger and it was also pretty good. We would definately go again.
The building decor has potential, but that is about it. The food was disappointing, the special coffee was terrible, and for the high price of the entree, there should have been a Greek salad included. The server not at all personable, therefore, we will not return to this restaurant again.
My family and I have been ordering from Montgomery's Cottage lunch for over 15 years now. We have always enjoyed our food! We have taken out hundreds of times as well as eaten in, and tho we have tried other fish and chip spots on the beach, we always enjoy The Cottage Lunch the best. Being born and raised in White Rock one takes pride in their local spots. Whenever I am asked "Where should I go for fish and chips when I visit White Rock beach?" I always suggest The Cottage lunch and people are never disapointed! When eating here you know the food will be - fresh, hot, good, not to greasy and served with a smile!
Try the deep fried pickles! Mmmmm
We enjoy taking out and going to sit at the beach. Inside is quite small (yet cozy) They also have a little patio area where you can sit, eat great food people watch.
We wanted to find a really nice restaurant to take my son and daughter for a special birthday dinner so I researched DineHere for something that fit the bill. I had read mixed reviews for this restaurant but wanted to give it a try - there are always two sides to every coin.
Upon our initial arrival, I was very pleased with the ambiance, look and layout of the restaurant - very tastefully decorated and a very warm, cozy and welcoming feeling. We were shown to our table immediately and greeted professionally and politely.
Our waitress was pleasant and helpful and took our order in a timely fashion but returned with the wrong drink order for my son and forgot my daughter's beverage. I feel that either she was inexperienced or just not paying attention though she was very pleasant. A few too many "there you go" and "voilas" for my liking... she needed a little refining for a restaurant of this calibre. She did act on her errors right away so she was forgiven.
Our food arrived with a beautiful presentation, and amazing taste though my sons lamb was cold in the middle - he asked for rare but cold it should not be. I had the mussels for an appetizer which were magnificent and perfectly cooked. I enjoyed every morsel. The flavours were absolutely wonderful and I commend the chef for his choice and blend of flavours to complement the lamb. My daughter had duck which was delicious, I had the halibut and my husband had the Land & Sea. We were all mostly impressed with the combination of flavours, the freshness and meal itself. Lots of comments on how the food was - we all tried each other's.
The waitress did bring dessrts with candles for my son and daughter and sang Happy Birthday to them which was very sweet. She brought a big smile to their faces.
All in all, I would highly recommend giving this restaurant a try - the food was wonderful and the ambiance was perfect - especially on a sunny day. Two thumbs up.
The last 3 times we had asked for window seats to enjoy the view and was told no even though all window seats were available . We are a couple so maybe window seats are not for couples . My view is first come first serve .
Server was friendly and dedicated . Food was so so . Not a pleasant experience overall .
Leela has slowed a bit likely due to the influx of Thai eateries in South Surrey, which is too bad because Leela should be the busiest. I will say that this is the BEST Thai restaurant in South Surrey and I have eaten at them all. Service is great, food is great, if you are craving Thai this is the place to go.
La Baia is simply my favorite Italian Eatery in White Rock and one of my favorite places to eat period. I drop in from time to time, but not often enough. The menu is oldschool and tasty - I like to order Veal Scaloppini Con Funghi & Lemone with Spaghetti Aglio Olio e Peperoncino and I die and go to heaven every time I eat there. Decor is stuck in the 80s but in the kind of way that after you dine there you will pray they never renovate, the service is PROFESSIONAL which is extremely rare nowadays and frankly adds to the experience in a big way. The place gets busy, I have been a few times without a reservation and it was tough to get a table.
Last night was the second time I attended Kappa Sushi.
As the number of places is limited, I strongly suggest to call prior to attending. We were lucky, there was no wait and a reservation got cancelled. We waited less than 10 minutes to be seated.
Kappa is located in a house. There is no table and chairs there. All private Tatami rooms, which is very pleasant.
We ordered one of their special of the day, Asparagus Gyoza. There were fabulous!
Followed an order of Goma Ae, Spicy Tuna, that was good, Dynamite Roll, the best I've ever eaten and a Mango Roll, very refreshing. For the 2 of us, it was a perfect meal, well paced by our waitress.
It took a little while to have our food after the order was made, but our waitress was present, bringing us tea and water. It was also a busy Sunday night and we were crazy hungry!
Overall, a great experience and we'll go again!
Eating at Fishboat was the best decision as a tourist. The food was incredible, and the service and environment was the perfect addition. The fish and chips were delicious, and the best I’ve ever tasted! The restaurant itself was decorated very nicely, it felt like we were in an actual boat, and there were actual antique pieces from a ship that was on display. Wonderful experience and I recommend it for everyone!
The owners welcomed me and my big family into their wonderfully decorated FishBoat. We were impressed with their hospitality and they accomodated us very well..even bringing out a high chair for my 1-year old nephew immediately! We enjoyed the nautical decor and we waited only shortly for incredible Fish and Chips! The Fish and Chips are really the BEST we've ever had..Lightly battered, crispy and yummy! I should mention that I am a huge Beattles fan and the owners didn't mind when I sang along with the music playing at Fish Boat. Fish Boat is a definate stop for me and my family every time we visit the Vancouver area!
My family surprised me for brunch at Pearl and good call by them. Service was great, attentive but not overly. Had a thirty minute caesar, which was awesome. My steak and eggs were cooked great, my kids enjoyed the kids breakfast. The apple dessert was great when they lit it on fire.
I would definatley reccommend Pearl! I really want to come back and try a crab fritata.
Probably the worst staff that I've come across while dining out. The waitresses act as if they're doing you a favor by gracing your table with their presence. Have been there twice and both times the service was a huge let down, although the waitress we had the second time was slightly friendlier than the first, which really isn't saying too much. From the minute you walk in it's as if you're a bother to them. Most of the staff is just sitting around and its obvious none of them want to get up to seat you at a table. Our first server ( a blonde girl wearing aviator glasses) was the absolute WORST! I don't think she smiled the entire time we were there. In fact, she had a very condescending attitude that screamed :I'm better than you! well sweetheart you're not. We paid the bill via debit machine and left the tip in cash on the table. While we were paying, we entered a tip amount of $0 on the machine (we had already left it on the table) and she have the NERVE to say... "what, no tip?" After that I felt like grabbing the money we had left on the table, its not like she deserved it anyway. I could probably rant on here for a while longer, but the point is the management and/or owners need to wake up and either train their staff on how to treat customers properly or fire them. The food was decent but I think I'd rather take out and eat it somewhere else.
I went to White rock one morning for nice walk. Came across this busy little place for breakfast.
Place was packed with local people so we thought food would be great, how wrong we were!
Long wait for 2 breakfast, fake hollandaise sauce and burned pan fries.
I don't understand why people line up for their crappy food.
This is a walk -in and pick up outlet.
Everything is ready and hopefully, hot.
The choice is fine and quality is O.K.,.
Even the prce is O.K..
They are working for Price so you might find that the toppings are a bit skimpy,
and the crust a bit on the thin thin side.
All in all...........acceptable, but just.
TUESDAY the price drops to $1.00 per slice...and THAT makes it quite attractive !
We went to this place and the service was amazing. We were very hungry and hoped that we could have a nice dinner as quick as possible. We were greeted by the server as soon as we steped in and once I informed him that we were in a hurry he made sure that we received friendly service fast. The foccacia bread was warm, crisp and delicious. I had the cioppino and it was the best I ever had. I even dipped a lot of focaccia into the broth as I did not want anything to go to waste. My hubby and daughter both ordered a steak (blue) made to perfection with a nice gorgonzolla sauce and vegetable that were delicious. It is not often that you find a chef that is able to make a blue steak, this was the best I ever tried. If you want to have a romantic dinner close to the beach where you receive the best service ever go to this place. Excellent food and service was given and we left happy, fool and impressed by the service and the food.
Food was decent considering price point. The staff ruined everything. Not only do they throw a pile of silverware and napkins on the table and walk away when you order food. Worst part was when I asked for my valet ticket to be stamped and the entire staff looked as though no one had ever validated a car and asked for a voucher that the valet service clearly advertises. Took them no less than 10 minutes to find the stupid valet stamp. My blood was boiling as the staff taking a break ate and drank while casually shouting out "ugh maybe its in that drawer, ugh maybe uh its in the back, ugh". Terrible. Dear management.... pony up for some real staff pver the age of 20 with experience and keep your local (and wealthy) clientel happy.
Yucca Tree Cafe is always busy for breakfast over the weekend, you can wait anywhere between 10 to 20 minutes for a table. Its a very tight fit inside; poor layout is mostly to blame. After a 10 minute wait for a table (not bad), three of us were seated at a two-person table (fair enough). It took a further 10 minutes before the waitress came over to ask our drink orders - despite all the tables being taken, no one appeared to eating (I assume they were waiting for meals or finishing up), which didnt explain why everything took so long. About 15 minutes (!) later, she appeared with a coffee carafe and filled our cups. So, 35 minutes after entering we received our coffee. At this point the timeline hadnt started to us much however, but after taking our meal order it took a FURTHER 45 MINUTES for it to arrive! IT WAS NOT AS BUSY to warrant a wait like that!
Additionally, the Eggs Yuccadict (Benedict) was a let down - stick to the regular breakfast which is particulary greasy (some like it that way I guess). Never saw our waitress again, went upfront to ask for the bill. If youre looking for a healthy cooked breakfast; this is not the place. If youre looking to test your morning patience; this is the place!
Overall, a dismal experience at best!
