The Washington Avenue Grill offers an upscale casual dining experience overlooking Semiahmoo Bay. We feature a western fusion menu, award-winning wine list, live music, and delicious martinis. Guests can dine in the pristine glass atrium, cozy main dining room, or on the patio.
The Washington Avenue Grill is the bright yellow building located on the ocean side of east beach, next to Semiahmoo park.
I've always found the food to be good, and the service is friendly and attentive. Depending on your personal style, the atmosphere could be described as anything from "funky & cozy" to "homemade addition with year-round indoor xmas lights".
So I don't think the interior is for everyone, as it's definitely eclectic, and the building itself is old and somewhat rundown. But to me that's part of the appeal of WAG, it's got character, the food is consistently good, and the staff are friendly and know what they're doing. The live music is also a nice touch, although, again, not for everyone. WAG feels like a real community restaurant, and reflects the community it exists in.
Their martini nights are always fun as well.
We visited on Canada Day, came early to avoid any crowds....convenient location with no problem parking. This has been here for a longtime and enjoys a good food reputation. First impression was that it's in need of much TLC and upgrading.....the ambiance is musty and thread bare. The menu selection is good but prices for food and wines are on the HIGH side. Efficient and friendly staff. Busy place but not on our top list due to run-down condition.
This is a nice restaurant ... views of the water, nice marine ambience. Friendly, efficient and attentive staff. We have been here four times, twice the meals were great, really great. Good sized portions, crispy and varied vegetables, wonderful seafood. The other two times our entrees were undercooked. The first time the halibut was still raw in the middle. We sent it back, and it was returned hot and well cooked, with the vegetables still hot. Their halibut, cooked correctly, is wonderful. The second time my husband's salmon was well cooked and hot. But, my lamb, ordered medium-rare, was essentially raw. It was a Saturday night, the place was packed, and no doubt the chef was working under pressure, but still ... a meat thermometer would come in handy here. Sent it back, but I guess by then it was cold, because it just came back reheated, rather than cooked further. Not the best. Anyway, the server was great, offered a comp dessert to make up for it. The desserts are really good.
Weekends are very busy here and therefore noisy. If you prefer things a little quieter, go earlier in the evening, or earlier in the week.
We have gone there for Mothers Day brunch many times over the years & also at other times of the year. The food is consistently good with excellent service. So many places change cooks & it goes downhill or do other things to not keep their high standards up.But this place does.
Sitting on the patio full of flowers, you feel like you are overlooking the ocean in a tropical garden, great ambiance with lots of ventilation,it must be so romantic on a summers night.
