Terrible, Terrible, Terrible.
By Grinder of Surrey , BC (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, March 26, 2012 - 12:56am [Dine in]

My experience at this restaurant was so horrible that it prompted me to open an account on Dine Here and vent. I am a first time reviewer, the same as many of those who have also apparently dined at this restaurant and have given stellar reviews which I find very very suspicious. Looks like someone might be trying to bump the average rating of this restaurant north a bit... well here we go.

Food:
Terrible, we had the sockeye salmon bites and the potato brie boxty(?). The best thing about the salmon bites was the tartar sauce, cuz I'm a sucker for tartar sauce, but otherwise they were dry and overcooked. The potato brie boxty looked like a chocolate chip cookie with two small strips of onion baked on it and I could not identify a familiar flavor in the appetizer. Weird.

For the entree I had a one piece sockeye and my girlfriend had the harbor salad. The fries that came with the Sockeye were soft and moist. The sockeye itself was not battered but covered in a breading that I have only ever before seen on fish sticks as a 5 year old and frozen chicken schnitzel. It didn't stick to the fish and fell right off the rigid fillet as soon as it was touched. The harbor salad was topped with a boiled and crumbling piece of cod and was completely undressed although the menu advertised it as a vinaigrette. It did however have chunks of hot dog relish on top of and throughout the salad. Why would you put relish in any salad? much less a salad with seafood. Keep it at the carnival. Oh and the brown lettuce. There was brown lettuce, we told the server and she didn't seem to care. She said she would let the kitchen know and when she returned she simply said the salad was all fresh. I gave her the brown limp leaves on a plate to show her kitchen, she didn't really come back much after that. The food was overcooked, limp and generally terrible.

we were still hungry because the majority of our entrees had been sent back and we figured they couldn't mess up dessert so we flipped to the back of the menu and got cheesecake and apple crumble. The cheesecake had the consistency of Jell-O pudding like it had been sitting out all day and the apple crumble was clearly not fresh with rubbery apples. Most of the dessert went unfinished as well.

Service:
Terrible. Our waitress was generally inattentive and claimed to have recognized me but couldn't remember from where in an attempt to build some kind of rapport when she could see the meal wasn't going well. When we arrived there were 4 other tables with people in them in the whole restaurant including the patio and we were asked if we had a reservation, we said that we didn't and were told that we should consider having one for next time. When any concern was voiced it was immediately dismissed and made to be the owners fault and explained as that is the way he does business. During the beginning of our meal one of the waitresses went around and put reserved signs on a few of the tables up front of house and then they were removed about an hour or so later. Clearly an attempt to make the place look like it has bookings when it truly doesn't. She also had the nerve to suggest how much to tip after the meal but this wasnt a shocker considering everything else.

Value:
for the terrible food this place is serving anything is overpriced. if it was actually decent food then it wouldn't be so bad.

Ambiance:
The interior of this place actually isn't bad considering they're going for that Irish-pub feel. the place has the look of nice wood and the bar looked like it was a comfy place to sit at considering how many employees I saw standing and ordering drinks from the bar. oh and our server was also the bartender and kept hopping back and forth to mix drinks or pour beer. Also noticed the tacky pictures with price tags on the walls. looks like they're not selling enough food to make a profit they have to sell overpriced art as well. The tv with "Irish" pictures flashing was kind of lame and the music was too loud and not what I would call Irish. 2.

The meal was so bad all we could do after was get gelato, because we were still hungry, and laugh about it on the pier. Save yourself the time and headache, ANY other restaurant on the pier would give better quality, value and service.

Cold & wet Sunday afternoon we decided to try Slainte By The Pier. They had a lunch stew special for $7.95. When we arrived there were only a couple tables full with one server working. After we ordered our lunch stew and salmon bites the placed filled up. We thought it was a good thing we beat the rush. Little did we know what was going to happen. About 20 minutes after taking our order server apologized asking again what we ordered. This was after she had taken orders of the other tables. We waited over an hour after everyone else received there’s. Table next to us who came after us was finished their meal before we received our stew. By this time we notice the food service was very slow. When I asked about receiving our salmon bites before our meal she gave me a blank look. We cancelled the salmon bites. When stew arrived it was in a soup bowl with no bread. The stew was good but not a huge portion. Assuming this was the lunch portion I did not say anything. When we receive the bill the stew was dinner portion for $13.95 each. When I asked the server about the lunch portion she said it was super small. When she took our order she did not ask us which stew portion we wanted and I assumed we ordered the lunch stew. The amount of stew we received was NOT worth $13.95. We complained to the server and manager about the how long our meal took. Both apologized but not sincerely and comp tea & coffee. We will never go back as this place was portion are small for what you pay for and food service is EXTREMELY slow. Need to pay for at least 2 hours for parking

Not my cup of tea

My partner and myself decided to go this past Saturday evening for what the sign outside said 'Voted Best Fish and Chips in White Rock'. According to who?! I ordered a Guiness which was fine. Partner had a glass of house red wine and we browsed the menu. Prices were expensive. We ordered what was called a Boxty with brie and bacon. What came out for $9 was 3 measly skinny potatoe pancakes with a tiny pice of bacon and tiny bit of brie with a little sour cream. Oh well. The menu boasts having 'Fressh, Never Frozen Fish'. Sounds good. $16.95 for the 2 piece cod and chips. My friend had his with yam fries, mine with regular.

Order came out approximately 15 mins later with two TINY pieces of fish (the size of chicken nuggets) and extremely over cooked yam fries. I asked the old waiter with glasses if we could get some new yam fries, and his response was they were real yams and they always come out that way. As opposed to fake yam fries? I made a comment about the measly portioned fish and he responds, they're according to our portion control. Fine. But at that price. So the worst part is the Fresh Never frozen??? My two pieces were cooked perfect on the outside, but FROZEN in the middle. Now, the waiter muttered something, took it back without apologizing, and the same pieces were brought back again. Just oilier. Wow, again all this for $16.95. Needless to say, to save further arguing to this guy who didn't really care, we paid exactly what the bill was with tax (no tip for obvi reasons), and left. Without so much as an apology. With so many places on the beach to choose from, you would think they'de want repeat business. Not from us.

I had heard a lot of good things about this little place from friends and family who still live in White Rock and with a couple of hours to kill we decided to finally check it out on a sunny December afternoon. Inside was quaint and comfy with a great view of the the bay and the pier and the food was as good as everybody told me it was. it was very busy and the lone server coped admirably. We tried the soup of the day, cauliflower and parmesan and the clam chowder, fresh, hot and delicious with home baked brown bread and some sweet potato fries.
If a restaurant can get the basics right I'm happy and Slainte did not dissappoint. We will return in the Summer to try their famous Fish and chips, according to my in-laws they are the best ever. Great service btw. and a good beer selection.

I have some family visiting for the holidays and decided to take them down to White Rock to walk the pier and see the Christmas lights. Even on a cold damp December day the promenade is lovely although the Christmas lights or lack of them was disappointing so we decided to go somewhere for a bite to eat. We chose Slainte, by the pier which is an Irish restaurant with a supreme view of the bay. Slainte is an irish word meaning Cheers and seemingly they are used to people mispronouncing it. There were a few other diners in the restaurant, all who seemed to be on a first name basis with the owner and soon we were all involved in one big conversation. My relatives are from New Brunswick and even they were surprised with how friendly and convivial this little place was.
We all ordered hot toddys which were delightful, Irish whiskey, honey, cloves, lemon and hot water and a secret ingredient or two that Jack was not sharing. The menu selection is awesome and we decided to all order something different so that we could sample as much as possible. To start we shared two boxty appetizers, Irish potato cakes covered in brie and bacon and the other with Guinness cheddar and carmelized onions. They were awesome, and we fought over the last crumbs. For mains we had both of their fish and chips, fresh cod with hand cut potato fries, and breaded sockeye with hand cut yam fries, the chicken pot pie and bangers and mash. It was all delicious. Piping hot and very tasty. We were all quite full at this stage but one of the other customers advised us to try some of the desserts so we did and we were certainly not disappointed.
We ordered a bailey's cheesecake and a bread pudding. The cheesecake was light and creamy and the bread pudding which was drizzled with whiskey liqueur and caramel sauce was awesome.
I am so impressed with our experience at Slainte, by the pier I felt compelled to send my first ever restaurant review. I could not recommend this place any higher. I'll be back very soon, maybe even tomorrow.

I've been eating at Slainte regularly for months now for 2 reasons. The food is always good and freshly prepared and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The staff are great and very personable. Sunday afternoons are the most fun with their folk session which is like being at a big happy family reunion. Very unique.
The food is always amazing and I'm really surprised to read that other peolple have had a bad experience. I find them really concistent and very accomodating. I have recommended this restaurant to everyone I know and nobody I know has been disappointed.
I'll be in over the holidays for some eggnog martinis.

I would recommended this restaurant for any occasion. Meals were high quality, very tasty and reasonably priced, Server was splendid and informed, but it was the little details of the local art, music and scenic irish photographs on the televison made a lovely warm mood and impressed me so much .This was a lovely change from the usual and it feels very personal. Very impressed with everything and we will return.

Great, unique food. have been here 3 times and never disappointed. Fish & Chips probably aren't the best on the beach, but try something they recommend thats unique to the restaurant on the menu and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Always seen good entertainment there. Shows usually every Thursday, Friday, Saturday I think. I think the drinks are a bit over-priced, but if there is music added I take that into consideration. Still, I think drink specials would help in the day-time or when there is no entertainment.

Submitted Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 9:12am [Dine in]

I live in White Rock and my wife and I decided to try this restaurant. The menu looked extensive and interesting enough for us to go there.
The service was ok, friendly, courteous and helpful. The food was terrible. My wife had fish and chips (advertised as the best on the beach). the halibut was overcooked to a point of complete dryness. She added a Squask and beet salad to it, which featured almost raw squash and almost raw beets and the vinegrette was non- descript and boring.
I had the boullabaisse which turned out to be a cioppino (and not a good one at that). I asked the chef why he called it boullabaisse and he answered that a cioppino was accompanied by a piece of toast and this was not.
The fish and seafood was way overcooked to a point where it lost all flavor.
The worst was the dessert. We ordered a vanilla bean creme brulee. The cream was lumpy, the vanilla bean was non-existant and the sugar top was soft.
Overall it was a terrible food experience and we will definitely not go there again.

We have had lunch here in July and had a wonderful experience . Food was really good .
We thought we would try the evening dining .There was four of us and had a great window seat with a wonderful view . That was the only redeeming feature of the evening . We ordered a jug of beer and an appy . Beer took 3 minutes the appy 30 +minutes . I asked the waiter for his favourite meal and he suggested the Chicken pot pie . He did say it wasn't a big portion so I asked for a side of fries .Others placed theirs and then we waited , and waited. One hour later we got our meals . Mine was just warm and so watery I asked for a spoon and no fries . The three other's where equally cool to cold . I got mine replaced with a hotter version . The crust was so tough I could not cut it so pulled it apart and tried it , Can you say Cardboard box taste and texture . One steak meal was tough and incorrectly cooked , Chicken meal cold and tasteless , Fish and chips , fish way over cooked .All three had Yam fries were cold and small pieces and burnt. Waitered offered free desserts , We declined the desserts as we had to be at another venue ,he then presented the bill with a $15.00 reduction on a $120 bill. With a little discussion he reduced it again . What a disasterous experience .We are locals and eat out weekly ,and love to support our White Rock eateries . With so many restaurants to choose from these places need to get it right every time.

My wife and I went for a Sunday afternoon stroll on the pier and decided to stop in here for a light lunch. Sandwich and soup was advertised for $7 and we figured that would hit the spot. The place was relatively busy, we took the second to last table available on the patio. Nice view of the water and a bit of a car show. Ordered our food, sandwich and soup, and ended up waiting and seeing a LOT more of the view.. We waited 35 minutes for food. No refills on our drinks while we waited either. Food finally arrived, soup was fine (Watercress, cream and bacon soup?), sandwiches where made on burnt toast. My wife was hungry so she ate what she could of it. I pointed out mine was burnt to the server and she promptly (3-4 minutes) brought out a replacement sandwich that was similarly burnt! Between the two I used the least burnt bread. The turkey itself on the sandwich was a little on the dry side, but would have been OK if it wasn't for the burnt toast. We finished our meal, still no refill on our drinks.

We got our bill and our server admitted that the food wasn't great and the neither was the service and apologized for that. She took off one of the sandwiches from the bill. Although appreciated, it was a little too late to save us.

We won't be going back.

We enjoyed a lovely lunch on the patio overlooking the water. You can't beat the views or location of this restaurant. They are also featured in the entertainment book. Service was quick and friendly although we were there rather early for supper so the place was very quiet.

Random Day Trip To White Rock

We took a trip to white Rock and were walking looking for a place to grab a bite. I was drawn in by the live Celtic band playing, so I drug my GF in. We sat ourselves after I grabbed a menu. I ordered a pint of Amber Ale from Stanley Park Brewery and we both had a one piece fish and chips. The fish was excellent. Deep fried and all it was quite tasty. I made the mistake of getting the garlic mashed potatoes instead of fries, which was so dry I mixed in the remaining tartar sauce and her left over ketchup to get it down. I should have ordered the fries. The servers were great with how packed and busy the place was. I will return in the future.

Cheers by the Pier

Submitted Tuesday, September 1, 2009 - 11:17pm [Dine in]

My wife and I have just returned from an excellent dinner here. We enjoyed both the food and the service very much. I had the special, not on the menu, of pork on pasta with rosemary, sundried tomato, and garlic in the sauce. The pasta was perfectly al dente, and the pork (five pieces!) was done tenderly. My wife had the soup and a salad with blue cheese - thank goodness for sharing; hers was delicious too. For dessert we had a creme brulee and a fruit crumble; both were delicious, and came with some banana slices sauced with a bit of maple syrup and some blackberries - yum! And, after the delicious main course, we were thankful that the desserts weren't huge - they were flavorful, delicious, and sized so that we didn't have to leave any nor feel guilty for eating it all.

The service was also great. Our waiter was friendly, funny, interesting; he'd worked at an Irish restaurant in his native Germany, and thus learned (so he said) to swear in olde Irish, as well as to appreciate that island's good food.

The location, just across from the pier, is perfect for watching the sunset, and the decor - light wood furniture, rather than the dark oak and mahogany I'd have expected in an establishment trying to seem Irish - made it a very pleasant place to eat and hang out. We also appreciated the pictures of Ireland on the first-floor walls and the souvenirs of Irish pop concerts on the mezzanine walls (Country Joe MacDonald and Bert Jansch at the same concert? Wish I'd been there.)

We'll be back!

Food and prices not worth the wait
By eclecticdiner of Coquitlam (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, July 27, 2009 - 12:21pm [Dine in]

Being from Coquitlam we don't get out to White Rock that often. I'm disappointed to say I've never had a good dining experience in White Rock, and that unlucky streak remains (can someone PLEASE point me to a good restaurant on the beach?!).

We were given coupons to this location while on the beach (that should have been my first clue) and having no where else to aim my palette, decided to try this. We were a group of 8 with children. No wait to get in on a Sunday just after 6:00. Menu seemed decent enough, but the prices were high. We waited a long time for drinks, to put the order in and to get the food. One of the children didn't get their meal until half way through. The food was decent enough but the portions were puny.

FOOD ALLERGY ALERT: if you have any food sensitivities, ask about everything you order. I ordered an item on the menu that didn't give any indication that one of the ingredients was on my no-no list. Couldn't finish my meal. I pointed it out to the Manager that the kitchen can't just arbitrarily add ingredients on a wim. After waiting 40 mins for our food I wasn't about to try to re-order. I just stole fries from my unwilling dining patrons plates (when there is meager portions, no one is too willing to share).

So I won't be back. Guaging by the reviews of the other strip restaurants, doesn't look that we'll be too successful anywhere in this neighborhood. I guess we'll just leave the beach when we're done and head inland. Too bad, such a great location wasted on such lousy eateries.
