Sandpiper is a pub in Whiterock serving 13 types of ales with a big screen TV and karaoke.
I've noticed that most of the reviews here are pretty old, so here's my two cents as I was just here the other night.
While not a fancy place at all, the ambiance is pretty awesome. It's kind of a weird pub, a bit worn down but it gives it character, and the people make this spot a favorite of mine and my friends. It's a great spot to meet people, you can go to this place and just start up a conversation with anyone in there, it's a pretty social place.
The prices are decent too. I don't think you can get a glass of wine anywhere else on the beach for less than $6. And even though it came in an oddly small looking glass, they sure filled it up! Also, if you want to buy a bottle of wine in house it is by far the cheapest I've ever seen. They have a little beer and wine store in the pub, so you can choose any wine you want and they add a $6 corking fee, which is pretty good considering you can drink a bottle of Hardy's for $22, or J.Lohr for only $32. This is unheard of, I've never been able to order a bottle of wine to my table that cheap anywhere. Ever.
I've been going to the Piper for years, and I can say for sure that the food has improved a lot. It was pretty inconsistent for a while but recently it's been amazing every single time. The portions are huge and the prices have stayed pretty much the same. You will not find bigger pieces of fish anywhere else along the beach as you do here. And they have all you can eat fish and chips for like ten bucks.
Oh, and the bathrooms got renovated, finally:) Too bad there's not more stalls though because it's always packed here on the weekends and there's always like 10 girls in there at a time.
If I was in the middle of nowhere, I may have had a different impression. But all things being relative, I have had some great times, great drinks, great food and great people in White Rock, and the Sandpiper does not compare to other places you could spend your money.
Us 3 girls met at the Sandpiper for lunch. The service was wonderful, the young lady who served us was very accomodating. The food was wonderful, I had the Reuben sandwich, it was a bit tiny would have been nicer served on larger bread, maybe sourdough but the taste was wonderful except I think they used processed swiss cheese??? The fries are good but too many of them! My sister had the chowder and she loved it, especially the fact that it had no bacon in it, cousin had the burger and was pleased with it. It was a cold day but the view was marvelous. The bathrooms could use a little reno and the interact machine wasn't working. All in all I would love to come back in the summer and try more of their menu items
another place in White Rock that is in great need of maintenance and repair. We ordered baked clam chowder and fish and chips. You would think that being baked it would come out HOT! it was COLD and when we asked the server to have to heated it came back WARM. The fish and chips were also warm and when you bite into the fish, the fish would slide right out of the batter. Sure seemed they were more interested in pushing the booze.
you know.. I used to work close to Marine Drive a number of years ago and the co-workers I had at the time would occasionally stop at this pub for drinks and snacks at the end of the day. and I guess it served it's purpose, even though there was absolutely nothing that jumped out at us to think "lets go to the SANDPIPER". we went simply because it was close and we didn't have to drive anywhere, in case we drank a little too much.
and in retrospect, that is the ONLY thing it has going for it. a great spot on the main strip in white rock, but no identity or personality whatsoever. they could have changed the name and the staff and we would have still just called it "The Pub" and wandered in at 6:30pm.
I guess it's no surprise that I've now moved away and haven't been to it, since.
I went this place three years ago for the first time. I do not go to White Rock that often but in yearly event. Actually my friends from Seattle and Tacoma insist to go back. I only went for lunches but food were always good and plentiful. Reasonably cost too ( It is good because I end up paying most of the time while they are on Canadian soil.).
